  • The Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes caused damages to many cultural properties; particularly, stone pagoda structures were significantly damaged among masonry cultural properties. To preserve these structures, it is necessary to understand their dynamic behavior characteristics under earthquakes. Analyses on such areas as deformation, frequency, maximum acceleration, permanent displacement, sliding, and rocking have to be performed. Although many analytical studies have already been conducted, dynamic behavior studies based on experiments are insufficient. Therefore, this study analyzed dynamic behavior characteristics by performing a shaking table experiment on a three-story stone pagoda structure at the Cheollongsa temple site damaged by the Gyeongju earthquake. As a result of the experiment, the displacements of stylobates did not occur significantly, but the tower body parts rotated. In particular, the rotation of the 1F main body stone was relatively larger than that of the other chief body stones because the 1F main body stone is relatively more slender than the other parts. In addition, the decorative top was identified as the component most vulnerable to sliding. This study found that the 1F main body stone is vulnerable to rocking, and the parts located on the upper part are more vulnerable to sliding.

  • In this study is proposed the advanced elasto-plastic analytical method which can identify complex structural behaviors on the splice part of steel structures such as sliding and plastic contact problem between splice plates and blots. Compliated boundary conditions and various manufacturing defects are considered in various analytical cases. In the design or repair phase the plastic behavior and ultimate strength of splice parts should be very carefully verified to extend the service life of steel structures.

  • Recently, the high-speed and intelligence technology of machine tools are developed for the high efficiency of productivity Under the operating condition from the high-speed of machine tools, the various failure modes can occur in core units of manufacturing system. Therefore it is for the reliability concept of machine tool to be required in a design level. And the above-stated technology must be accommodated in the feeding and spindle subsystem, etc those are the core units of machine tools. In this study, we are developed the test-bed of sliding cover (C-plate) in order to evaluating reliability and estimating failure modes of feeding subsystem under operating conditions. The reliability experiment using the developed test-bed and the additional structural analysis executed on single and double structure. We found out the weak parts of sliding cover and were able to predict a life cycle from the experiment results. In this study, we propose the new C-plate model with double link structure to apply the high-speed machine tool in the fundamental guideline.

  • The friction and wear properties of ceramics are very important in the applications to engineering ceramic parts such as seal rings, pump parts, automobile meter parts, and so on. In this study, the effects of each other purity on the mechanical and tribological properties of purity zirconia ceramics were investigated. Also in order to determine the effects of sliding distance, sliding speed, contact load, friction coefficient, the amount of worn out material at a certain time, and the prepared composites were measured. Crystalline phases and microstructure were examined with XRD and SEM. The results show that we obtained the good properties of friction coefficient and wear resistance at the purity 99.5% of zirconia. than this of the purity 95% were great at the wear amount of worn out material.

  • A robust disturbance rejection controller for the hovering motion of underwater vehicles in near the surface of sea is presented. The suggested controller consists of two control parts, the one is disturbance observer for taking into account the effects of sea wave and missile-launching forces, and the other is sliding mode controller for the robust stability of underwater vehicles with model uncertainties and nonlinearities. It is shown that the sliding mode control system with disturbance observer is more effective compared with the sliding mode control system, especially in case that large sea wave force is affected.

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk in sliding are investigated. Also wear mechanism to from the oxide layer and the characteristics of the oxide layer formation are investigated. AISI 52100 steel ball is used for the substrate of coated ball specimens. Two types of coated ball specimens were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 and 4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in coating thickness. AISI 1045 steel is used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of the two materials, the tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitrogen environment to avoid oxidation. And to study the effects of surface roughness of counter-body, TiN coating thickness and contact load of sliding test on the characteristics of oxide layer formation on counter-body, various tests were carried out. From the results, the friction characteristics between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear track on counter-body and this layer caused the high friction. And the formation rate of the oxide layer on wear track increased as the real contact area between the two materials increased as the contact load increased, the TiN coating thickness decreased and the surface of counter-body smoothened.

  • There are several studies on reducing the friction that occurs on the relative sliding contact surface of moving parts under extreme environments. In particular, a solid lubricated bearing is studied to solve the tribological problem with friction reduction and durability parts using solid lubricants (lead or silver) in a vacuum atmosphere. Galinstan is mainly used as a liquid metal lubricant, but it is inevitable to have limited tribological applications owing to its high coefficient of friction. Many researchers work on surface texturing for surface modification and precision processing methods. To increase durability and low friction, DLC coating with hydrophobicity is applied on the contact surface texture. Therefore, using an untextured specimen, a dimple specimen, and a DLC-coated dimple specimen under liquid metal lubrication, this paper presents the following experimental sliding friction characteristics in the sliding friction test. 1) The average coefficient of friction of the DLC-coated dimple specimen and dimple specimen are lower compared to that of a non-patterned specimen. 2) In the DLC-coated dimple specimens, the average coefficient of friction changes according to the change in the dimple density. 3) DLC-coated dimple specimens with a density of 12.5 have the lowest average coefficient of friction under 41.6 N of normal load and 143.3 RPM.

  • A VSS observer-based sliding mode control is described for continuous-time systems with uncertain nonlinear elements, in which the Euclidean norm of unknown element is bounded by a known value. For a case of complete state information, we first derive a sliding mode controller consisting of three parts: a linear state feedback control, an equivalent input and a min-niax control. It is then shown that the present attractiveness condition is simpler than that for a case without using the concept of equivalent input. We next design a VSS observer as a completely dual form to the sliding mode controller. Finally, we discuss a cas of incomplete state information by applying the VSS observer.
