  • MRS is to measure very small metabolite signals, whose resonant frequencies spread over the chemical shift range characteristic of the measured nucleus. The MR signal originates from the excited volume, which is a column of tissue divided into slices by gradient or rf encoding. The parameters that acquired data affected by TE, TR, and other variables. The higher spatial resolution of 3D CSI compared to SVS and its ability to examine regional metabolite variations for brain study.

  • Purpose: A new compressed sensing technique by iterative truncation of small transformed coefficients (ITSC) is proposed for fast cardiac CINE MRI. Materials and Methods: The proposed reconstruction is composed of two processes: truncation of the small transformed coefficients in the r-f domain, and restoration of the measured data in the k-t domain. The two processes are sequentially applied iteratively until the reconstructed images converge, with the assumption that the cardiac CINE images are inherently sparse in the r-f domain. A novel sampling strategy to reduce the normalized mean square error of the reconstructed images is proposed. Results: The technique shows the least normalized mean square error among the four methods under comparison (zero filling, view sharing, k-t FOCUSS, and ITSC). Application of ITSC for multi-slice cardiac CINE imaging was tested with the number of slices of 2 to 8 in a single breath-hold, to demonstrate the clinical usefulness of the technique. Conclusion: Reconstructed images with the compression factors of 3-4 appear very close to the images without compression. Furthermore the proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and is stable without using matrix inversion during the reconstruction.

  • Slices of rat corpora lutea(CL) incubated with. prostaglandin $F_{{2{\alpha}}}(PGF_{2{\alpha}})$ in Krebs-Hensenleit (K-H) Ringer solution showed a decrease in $Na^+-K^+$-ATPase activity after 60 min of incubation. However, $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ in vitro did not alter $Na^+-K^+$-ATPase activity of isolated luteal membrane fractions. Following $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ induced in vivo luteal regression, reduction of Vmax an elevation of the activation energy above transition temperature of the lipid phase of the membrane occurred without changes of Km, optimum pH and transition temperature. These results suggest that reduction of $Na^+-K^+$-ATPase activity after $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ treatment may be due to the reduction of the number of enzyme molecules or to masking of the active site of the enzyme without any change in enzyme characteristics. In addition, a change in membrane bound enzyme activity may be an early step in $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ induced luleolysis.

  • The action of opioid on the hyperpolarization-activated cation current $(I_h)$ in substantia gelatinosa neurons were investigated by using whole-cell voltage-clamp recording in rat spinal brain slices. Hyperpolarizing voltage steps revealed slowly activating currents in a subgroup of neurons. The half-maximal activation and the reversal potential of the current were compatible to neuronal $I_h.$ DAMGO $(1\;{\mu}M),$ a selective- opioid agonist, reduced the amplitude of $I_h$ reversibly. This reduction was dose-dependent and was blocked by CTOP $(2\;{\mu}M),$ a selective ${\mu}-opioid$ antagonist. DAMGO shifted the voltage dependence of activation to more hyperpolarized potential. Cesium (1 mM) or ZD 7288 $(100\;{\mu}M)$ blocked $I_h$ and the currents inhibited by cesium, ZD 7288 and DAMGO shared a similar time and voltage dependence. These results suggest that activation of ${\mu}-opioid$ receptor by DAMGO can inhibit $I_h$ in a subgroup of rat substantia gelatinosa neurons.

  • Induction of neurogenesis can occur in the hippocampus in response to various pathological conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes that occur in endogenous neural stem cells in response to amyloid beta $(A{\beta})_{25-35}$-induced neuronal cell damage in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. Cresyl violet staining and Fluoro-Jade B staining were used to detect neuronal cell damage and changes of mossy fiber terminals were observed by Timm's staining. The immunofl uorescence staining was used to detect the newly generated cells in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus with specific marker, 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU), Ki-67, Nestin, and doublecortin (DCX). In compared to control slices, neuronal cell damage was observed and the mossy fibers were expanded to CA3 area by treatment with $A{\beta}_{25-35}$. Ki-67/Nestin- and BrdU/DCX-positive cells were detected in the SGZ. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that $A{\beta}$-induced neuronal damage results in an increase in endogenous neural stem cells in rat hippocampal slice cultures not only for gliosis but also for neurogenesis.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive bandwidth allocation algorithm for the transmission of VBR video through ATM Networks. In order to evaluate the required bandwidth for the VBR video, the characteristics of the compressed VBR video generated by the two-layered coder are analyzed with variations in the number of GOP(N), quantizer scale(q), and the number of low-frequency DCT coefficients(.betha.). The two-layer coder which is used to separate from the number of DCT coefficients is designed to transmit the VBR video efficiently. The compressed data generated by the two-layer coder are splitted into the high priority and low priority cells. If congestion is occurred in ATM networks, the minimum image quality is maintained by the high priority cells. The required bandwidth for VBR video is estimated with a prediction algorithm using the scene anframe correlations as well as the statistical properties of the VBR video sources. Strong correlation among the adjacent slices in a frame represents by the scene correlation andstrong correlation among the frames is represented by the frame correlation. The performance of the bandwidth allocation scheme proposed is evaluated in terms of the bandwith utilization, cell loss rate, and SNR with variations in q, n, .betha.. Simulation rewsults shown that the proposed scheme is superior to the conventional methods.

  • Results of two-part wedge analysis and centrifuge test executed by Zornberg et al. were compared for geotextile-reinforced slope stability. For two-part wedge analysis results of two cases, a frictional case considering internal friction of soil as interwedge friction and a nonfrictional case not considering, were also compared and evaluated. The analysis was based on limit equilibrium and two-part wedge was divided into slices as many as the number of geotextiles to obtain a maximum tension distribution mobilized in reinforcements. A significant observation was that the distribution was a triangular shape with maximum tension of geotextile at a transit point of interwedge. The number of geotextiles and failure surface of frictional case were reasonable and more comparable to results of the centrifuge tests than those of nonfrictional case. Therefore it can be said that two-part wedge analysis is recommendable for design analysis of reinforced slopes if an interwedge angle is regarded to be an angle of internal friction in soil.

  • This study was conducted to investigate functional properties of 70% acetone extract in different parts of two potato varieties. 'Superior' and 'Atlantic' potato were processed by following method. Potatoes are washed, peeled, sliced and steamed before hot air drying for flesh and peel powder. Hunter's L and b values of flesh powder from blanched 'Superior' potato were higher than flesh powder from fresh 'Superior' potato. Discoloration of 'Superior' potato was inhibited by steam blanching. Contents of total polyphenol and chlorogenic acid in the 70% acetone extract of 'Superior' potato were higher than those of 'Atlantic' potato paticularly in the blanched flesh and peel. But flavonoid was not detected in flesh extract. The phenolic concentration was not decreased by the heat treatment. The nitritescavenging and electron donating ability was greatest at the tuber peel including the skin and cortex tissue 1mm beneath the skin. From the above results browning reaction and polyphenol contents in different parts of potato slices were dependent on cutivars. Peels contained more polyphenols than those from the flesh. The results indicate that potato peel extract of steam blanched plus hot air dried potato tuber showed the effectiveness as a natural nitrite scavenger and antioxidant.

  • Hippocampal slice models can be a powerful tool to study the mechanism of partial epilepsy. Despite the loss of connection with the rest of the brain, in vitro hippocampal slice preparations allow detailed physiological and pharmacological studies, which would be impossible, in vivo. There are several methods to induce electrographic seizures on hippocampal slice models. Those are electrical pulse train stimulation, 0 $Mg^{2+}$ artificial cerebrational fluid and high concentration of extracelluar $K^+$ on bath. Among them, the electrically triggered seizure may mimic the physiological communication between neuronal populations without any deterioration of normal physiologic and chemical status of the hippocampal slice models. Presumably, such communication from hyperexcitable areas to other neuronal populations is involved in the development of epilepsy. Electrographic seizures in hippocampal slice models occur in the network of neurons that are involved in epileptic seizures in the hippocampus in vivo. Because these models have many advantages and are very valuable to research of epileptogenesis on partial epilepsy, I would like to introduce the electrophysiological methods to induce electrographic seizure or epilepsy on hippocampal slice models briefly in this paper.

  • This experiment was conducted to observe the changes of composition of atmosphere in storage room by controlled ventilation under normal and sub-atmospheric conditions, and the biochemical changes in apple texture under these conditions. The results were as follows; 1) By controlled ventilation, concentration of carbon dioxide in storage room was optionally regulated and constantly maintained. 2) Among compositions of internal atmosphere of apple, especially, concentration of ethylene was much decreased at apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition than that stored under normal atmospheric condition. 3) Acidity of apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition was much greater than that of apple stored under normal atmospheric condition. 4) Respiratory quotients of apple, which was stored under normal and sub-atmospheric conditions, were shown to be high. But decarboxylation of added pyruvate was found more active in slices prepared from apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition.
