  • A laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of the additions of lime soluble starch on the behavior of silica in submerged soil. 1. Available silica in the submerged soil was increased as pH come up to neutral condition and Eh decreased. 2. Application of soluble starch accelerating the soil reduction nearly doubled the amount of silica sorbed in soil from silica solution. 3. Silica sorption of soil treated with slaked lime was increased to some extent in the low silica solution but was not showed that constancy in high silica solution. 4. The reaction between amount of silica sorbed in soil and silica concentration in solution followed not Lamgmuir but Freundlich adsorption isotherm.

  • In this study, the effect of soil ameliorators on ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal communities in coal mine spoils was investigated. Organic fertilizers and slaked lime were applied as soil ameliorators in 3 abandoned coal mine spoils. One year after the initial treatment, roots of Pinus densiflora seedlings were collected and the number of ECM species, colonization rate, and species diversity were assessed. The results showed that the soil ameliorators significantly increased ECM colonization on the roots of P. densiflora. The results suggest that soil ameliorators can have a positive effect on ECM fungi in terms of growth of host plants and show the potential use of soil ameliorator treatment for revegetation with ECM-colonized pine seedlings in the coal mine spoils.

  • The study was investigated to confirm the morphology of crystal from xonotlite to wollastonite at elevated temperature by electron microscopy. Mixtures of slaked lime and powdered quartz with plenty water were oscillated continuously in an autoclave under the pressure of 25kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 8 hours to obtain well crystallized xonotlite. This milky slurry consisting of xonotlite was gained and dried in oven at 11$0^{\circ}C$. Examination of the electron micrograhs showed the xonotlite to be developed thin lath-like crystals and to be formed aggregate as chestnut bur. Details of the morphology suggest that the heat-treated xonotlite up to 100$0^{\circ}C$ splited and deformed slightly in agreement with the topotaxial transformation theory of xonotlite to wollastonite. The molded material endured in good shape under 120$0^{\circ}C$ except a little shrinkage.

  • The mixture of quartz powder and slaked lime with plenty water was oscillated in an autoclave and treated hydrothermally under the pressure of 10 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 8 hours. The main mineral synthesized was confirmed 11$\AA$ tobermorite by the method of X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. Tobermorite was heat-treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ for investigation of transformation of morphology and structure. Electron micrographs showed the thin platy structure of synthetic tobermorite with a little of crumpled foil or fibrous semi-crystalline calcium silicate hydrates. No difference in structure was appeared under the temperature of 80$0^{\circ}C$ but tobermorite converted gradually into wollastonite at 800$^{\circ}$~85$0^{\circ}C$. On heating, moulded material from tobermorite hardly shrinks under 80$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The manufacture property of anhydrous calcium sulfate (anhydrite Ⅱ) from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum discharged from domestic thermoelectric power plants to apply as an auxiliary material of cement and concrete by high temperature treatment were investigated. The FGD gypsum was completely converted to anhydrite Ⅱ at the temperature of 700$^{\circ}C$ and the retention time of 1 hr. In the phase transformation process, particle size was also changed. The chemical composition, particle size and heat property of anhydrite Ⅱ made from the FGD gypsum were similar to them of natural gypsum. In the leaching test of sulfate ion (SO$_4^{2-}$) at the temperature of 90$^{\circ}C$ and the retention time of 1 hr, the amount of leached SO$_4^{2-}$ for the anhydrite Ⅱ that was sintered at 700$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was about 50 wt.% based on that of natural gypsum. In addition, the amount of leached SO$_4^{2-}$ for the anhydrite Ⅱ by adding the slaked lime of 3 wt.% decreased about 70 wt.% comparing with that of natural gypsum. In the application test, the compressive strength of cement and concrete manufactured by using the anhydrite Ⅱ as an auxiliary material were similar or superior compared with them of cement and concrete done by natural gypsum as an auxiliary material.

  • This study was conducted to use oyster shells, which have caused environmental problems in the coastal of Korea, as an agricultural material after processing. Physico-chemical components and neutralizing amount on the Ihyun silt loam of crushed oyster shell and slaked lime were examined. In field experiment, the properties of the soil, growth and yield of lettuce, cabbage, spinach, onion, red pepper and soybean were examined by the treatments of the shell(3.68ton/ha) or the lime (2.76ton/ha) with a randomized block design. Particle size of crushed oyster shell consisted of 73.4% of 1~60mesh and 26.6% larger then 61 mesh and contents of CaO, OM, and $P_2O_5$, etc. were 55.5%, 1.3%, and 0.29%, respectively. The requirement of the shell to neutralize the soil was 130~135% of the lime, but after 24months, it was the same. The application of the shell increased the contents of available $P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2$ exchangeable Ca in used soil. The shell tratment increased the leaf height, leaf width, etc. of the examined plants, and the yields 6~154% according to examined plants, as compared with the nonliminged, indicating that the shell possesses a great potential as an agricultural material with the same effectiveness as the lime.

  • The pot experiment was conducted primarily to clarify the relationship between lime application and they amount of potassium for the basal and top dressings on paddy rice. (Orizae sativa L. cultivar; variety Jinheung) The soils mixed with lime and without lime were separately filled in to 0.2827 a. open-bottom concretepots. The soil with lime was treated with slaked lime, at two weeks before transplanting to correct soil pH. around 7.0. The total amount of potassium 12 kilograms per 10a was applied by two or three split doses during transplanting, 19 days after transplanting and primodial stages. The results of experiment obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The application of potash in the rate of 4kg per 10a or less for basal dressing and the remaining amount of potash for top dressing at 19 days after transplanting and primodial stage or one top dressing, at primodial stage have increased the yield of paddy with increased number of panicles per hill, milliequivalent ratio of $K^-/Ca^{++}+Mg^{++}$ in leaves in the later stage of growth, number of ripened grains per panicle, and rate of grain maturity. 2. On the other hand, the greater the amount of potassium given for the basal dressing (over 4kilograms per 10a), the smaller number of tillers and panicles were resulted. And the tendency was considered chiefly due to high salt concentration at the early stage of rice growth.

  • Due to the fact that possible risk associated with soil-crop-food chain transfer, metal contamination in croplands has become a major topic of wide concern. Accumulation of toxic metals in edible parts of crops grown in contaminated soils has been reported from number of crops including rice, soybean, wheat, maize, and vegetables. Therefore, in order to ensure food safety, measures are needed to be taken in mitigating metal pollution and subsequent uptake by crop plants. Present paper critically reviewed some of the cost effective remediation techniques used in minimizing metal uptake by crops grown in contaminated soils. Liming with different materials such as limestone ($CaCO_3$), burnt lime (CaO), slaked lime [$Ca(OH)_2$], dolomite [$CaMg(CO_3)_2$], and slag ($CaSiO_3$) has been widely used because they could elevate soil pH rendering metals less-bioavailable for plant uptake. Zn fertilization, use of organic amendments, crop rotation and water management are among the other techniques successfully employed in reducing metal uptake by crop plants. However, irrespectively the mitigating measure used, heterogeneous accumulation of metals in different crop species is often reported. The inconsistency might be attributed to the genetic makeup of the crops for selective uptake, their morphological characteristics, position of edible parts on the plants in respect of their distance from roots, crop management practices, the season and to the soil characteristics. However, a sound conclusion in this regard can only be made when more scientific evidence is available on case-specific researches, in particular from long-term field trials which included risks and benefits analysis also for various remediation practices.

  • This study was carried out to investigate in influence of inoculation B. sp. and lime types on nutrient content of peanut seed, and the correlation between nutritient contents in seed and plant. 1. Inoculated B. sp., content of crude protein, phenylalanine, isoleucine, cystine, histidine, aspartic acid, serine, and alanine in seed were increased significantly, but that of crude fat was decreased. 2. The content of crude fat was the highest without lime, glutamic acid was the highest with calcium sulfate, valine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, aspartic acid, serine, glycine and alanine with slaked lime, and histidine with calcium carbonate. 3. The content of crude protein in seed was negatively correlated with that of crude fat. The contents of chlorophyll, allantoin, ammonia, free amino acid, T-N, $P_2O_5$, and CaO in leaf at 100 days after sowing were positively correlated with the content of crude protein and various kinds of amino acid in seed, but negatively with the content of crude fat. The content of nitrate in leaf at 100 days after sowing showed the result of contrary tendency.
