  • Taking the normal mode transmission direction perpendicular to the substrate, an alternative equivalent network formulation is developed for the analysis of optical strip waveguides. All kinds of mode couplings between the normal modes are included in this formulation. Compared to the previous equivalent network formulations, the calculations are simplified especially when the thickness of the uniform slab is thin enough such that no well guided modes are available along the uniform slab waveguide.

  • Enhanced analysis is performed to design a wedge projection system with a slab structure that increases the projected image size. The specification values of the system such as the length of the slab structure and the imaging region are calculated and investigated using an optical simulation tool. We also propose a split imaging region method to represent a large tiled scene using the thin wedge waveguide structure. Experiments are performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Characteristics of two-dimensional slab photonic crystal lasers will be summarized. Room temperature c.w operation is demonstrated at 1.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ by using InGaAsP slab-waveguide triangular photonic crystal on top of wet-oxidized aluminum oxide. Recently, 2-D PBG structures have attracted a great deal of attention due to their simplicity in fabrication and theoretical study as compared to the three-dimensional counterparts [1]. Air-guided 2-D slab PBG lasers were reported by Caltech group (2). However, this air-slab structure is mechanically fragile and thermally unforgiving. Therefore, a new structure that can remove this thermal limitation is dearly sought after for 2-D PBG laser to have practical meaning. In this talk, we report room-temperature continuous operation of 2-D photonic bandgap lasers that are thermally and mechanically stable.(omitted)

  • The problem of electromagnetic coupling through a narrow slit in a parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) covered by a dielectric slab with a conducting strip on the slab is considered for the case that the TEM wave is incident in the PPW. Coupled integral equations for the tangential electric field in the slit and the induced current over the strip are derived and solved numerically by use of the method of moments. In order to show the effect of the conducting strip on the coupling, some numerical results for the reflected and transmitted powers in the guide, the coupled power through the slit, the equivalent slit admittance, and radiation pattern are presented. From the results, it is observed that the maximum available power coupled through the slit exterior to the PPW amounts upto 50% of the incident power in the PPW.

  • We propose a rigorous 2D approximation technique for the 3D waveguide structures; it can minimize the well-known approximation errors of the commonly used effective index method. The main concept of the proposed technique is to compensate for the effective cladding index in the equivalent slab model of the original channel waveguide from the modal effective index calculated by the nonuniform 2D finite difference method. With simulations, we used the proposed technique to calculate the coupling characteristics of a directional coupler by the 2D beam propagation method, and the results were almost exactly the same as the results calculated by the 3D beam propagation method.

  • We propose a novel planar optical interconnection scheme for 100 Gb/s optical packet address detection, which consists of waveguide grating couplers and a diffractive microlens integrated on a glass substrate 3-dimensionally. Length and duty cycle of the grating couplers have been determined on the bases of the ray-optic propagation-mode analysis in a slab waveguide and of the rigorous coupled-wave diffraction analysis for out-coupled radiation-modes. The 3-dimensionally integrated planar optics makes it possible to connect each address bit-signals of $TE_ 0-waveguide$ mode to the detector with a power uniformity of 6.4 % and a total coupling efficiency of 72.3 %.

  • New method to calculate the characteristics of the dominant and higher order modes of waveguide latching phase shifters are presented. Due to the tensor permeability, E and H fields inside the ferrite are expanded in terms of the LSE and LSM eigenmodes of the dielectric-slab-loaded waveguide. The equivalent coupled transmission line equations on the transverse plane are derived to obtain the dispersion characteristics and the E and H field distributions. Numerical results at X-band are compared with those published previously. The derived field distributions can be used to suppress the higher order modes of the latching phase shifters, so that the phase shift from the dominant mode only contributes the performance of the phase shifters.

  • Room-temperature continuous operation of two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers is achieved at 1.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ by using InGaAsP slab-waveguide triangular photonic crystal on top of wet-oxidized aluminum oxide. Recently, 2-D PBG structures have attracted a great deal of attention due to their simplicity in fabrication and theoretical study as compared to the three-dimensional counterparts [1]. Recently, air-gulfed 2-D slab PBG lasers were reported by Caltech group [2]. However, this air-slab structure is mechanically fragile and thermally unforgiving. • In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic finite element method, that is popularly employed in mechanical structure analysis, for more practical designing purpose of RF device. The proposed method is formulated based on the vector finite element method cooperated by pertubation analysis. The method utilizes sensitivity analysis algorithm with covariance matrix of the random variables that represent for uncertain physical quantities such as length or various electrical constants to compute the probabilities of the measure of performance of the structure. For this computation one need to know the variance and covariance of the random variables that might be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analyzing several device with different be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analysis several device with different measure of performanes. For the convenience of formulation, two dimensional analysis has been performed to apply it into waveguide with dielectric slab. In the problem the dielectric constant of the dielectric slab is considered as random variable. Another example is matched waveguide and cavity problem. In the problem, the dimension of them are assumed to be as random variables and the expectations and variances of quality factor have been computed.
