  • Soil-steel bridges are made of flexible corrugated steel plates buried in the well-compacted granular soil. One kind of possible collapses of these structures could be initiated by shear or tension failure in the soil cover subjected to vehicle loads. Current design codes provide the requirements for the minimum depth of the soil cover to avoid problems associated with soil cover failures. However, these requirements were developed for short span (less than 7.7 m) structures which are made of unstiffened plates of standard corrugation (150$\times$50 m). Numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the behavior of long span soil steel bridges according to thickness of the soil cover. The span of structures were up to 20 m and deep corrugated plates (381$\times$140 m) were used. The analysis showed that the minimum cover depth of 1.5 m could be sufficient to prevent the soil cover failure in the structures with a span exceeding 10 m. Additional analyses were performed to verify the reinforcement effect of the concrete relieving slab which can be a special feature to reduce the live-load effects. Analyses revealed that the bending moment of the conduit wall with a relieving slab was less than 20% of that without a relieving slab in a case of shallow soil cover conditions.

  • The approach slab plays an important role in the driving comfort of the connection section on a bridge. On the other hand, the approach slab only calculates the section force of a simple beam, and does not analyze the behavior. In this study, the unsupported length and settlement of approach slabs of IPM Bridges were examined using structural analysis. First, the section force was calculated by designing a simple beam, according to the length of the approach slab. The structural analysis was conducted to examine the behavior of the unsupported length and settlement. As the result, the bending moment decreased when the unsupported length was increased, and the bending moment increased when the settlement was increased. In addition, the design section force was estimated to be larger than the force of structural analysis, and the design of the approach slab according to the design guideline showed no problem in stability. Nevertheless, the vertical displacement exceeded the maintenance criterion of a 1/200 curve when the settlement exceeded 10 mm regardless of the unsupported length. Therefore, excessive settlement occurs in the reinforced earth retaining wall supporting the approach slab, and the design bending moment may be exceeded. Therefore, strict management is required.

  • There are more than 800 railway steel plate girder bridges which are in use and the total length is approximately 50 km. Among these, it shall be pointed out that non-ballast rail systems which lay on wood sleepers are the most critical members. To strengthen this type of structures, mainly two methods have been applied. The first one is the most typical method which is to replace the girders with slab girder system or steel composite girders and to add ballast. It is not uncommon that the construction cost of substructure is more than ten time higher than that of superstructures and even in this case, the structural uncertainty for the substructures is not diminished. To resolve above mentioned problems, new method was developed to rehabilitate railway steel girder bridge by adding PC-slab using transport equipment. Using this method, substructure strengthen is rarely required because the additional weight to the bridge superstructure is only up to 1.0t/m. Also it was possible to save the construction cost by reducing construction duration and by simplifying the construction process. Experimental construction was performed for Jewon bridge and measurements were performed before and after construction to verify the bridge capacity.

  • The objective of this research aims at improving the structural and economical efficiency of small and medium-span reinforced concrete bridge slab with the Inverted-T girders (hereinafter, called as IT). This IT method has an advantage over minimizing the construction process which could cause environmental pollution and traffic congestion. Especially it is thought that this new composite bridge slab with IT girders has better aesthetic view and visibility than existing old bridges, and is also a good methodology to solve labor shortage problems due to coming aging society. Therefore, this IT method should be one of very effective construction technologies to improve the constructibility and to reduce the construction cost.

  • In the railway bridges, steel plate girder types are preferred due the high stability. Nevertheless, it has been pointed out that this type of bridge has problems such as, structural damages in the rail and girder seat, noise problem due to impact at the rail joint and excessive vibration. This vibration and/or deflection are mainly because insufficient stiffness of steel plate type of bridge. To resolve these problems, PC-Slab composite plate girder type which has simple process and economic cost, is proposed in this study. The static and dynamic experiment is performed by using the production of actual sized PC-Slab and abandoned steel plate girder. The object of this experiment is to verify the fact that girder stiffness increase and structural safety. The result of the experiment is used to analyze the effect of performance improvement of PC composite plate girder type. Using this method, economic rail maintainers, girder stiffness increase, and also speed/ride improvement even for existing rail could be expected by dynamic performance improvement. Additionally noise due to impact, deflection and vibration caused from long rails can be reduced.

  • The vertical forces in rail fasteners at areas of bridge transitions near the embankment and on the pier will occur due to different deformations of adjoining bridges caused by the trainloads. The up-lifting forces is not large problem in the blast track because the elasticity of blast and rail pad buffs up-lifting effect. But, it is likely to be difficult to ensure the serviceability of the railway and the safety of the fastener in the end in that concrete slab track consist of rail, fastener, and track in a single body, delivering directly the up-lifting force to the fastener if the deck is bended because of the end rotation of the overhang due to the vertical load. When the up-lifting force exceeds the clamp force of the fastener clip, the rail pad is out of fastener, which makes decrease the serviceability of the railway, such as noise and vibration. Furthermore, it is possible to reduce the safety of the track as the longitudinal resistance. This study is focused on guideline suggestion to decrease up-lifting force in the fastener adjacent to the civil joint of slab track of bridge throughout the parametric analysis between the vertical spring stiffness of the fastener as the material approach, the space of fastener adjacent to bridge transition, the rigidity of the girder as the geometrical approach and up-lifting force under the train load.

  • Continuous welded rail on bridge structure experiences typically a large amount of additional longitudinal axial forces due to longitudinal track-bridge interaction under temperature and traction/braking load effect. In order to reduce the additional axial forces, special type of fastener, such as ZLR and RLR or rail expansion joint should be applied. Sliding slab track system is known to reduce the effect of track-bridge interaction by the application of a sliding layer between slab track and bridge structure. This study presents track-bridge interaction analysis results of the sliding slab track and compares them with conventional fixed slab track on bridges. The result shows that the sliding slab track can significantly reduce the additional axil forces of the continuously welded rail, and the difference is more significant for long and continuous span bridge.

  • This study proposes a double-composite section to enhance the s serviceability of twin-girder railway bridges, especially in terms of the flexural stiffness of the composite section in negative-moment regions. This paper deals with experiments on continuous twin-girder bridge models with 5m-5m span length with the proposed double-composite action. From results of static tests on the bridge models, several design considerations were investigated including effective width, shear connection and ultimate strength of the double-composite concrete slab showed full shear connection, which verified the suggested empirical equation. From the flexural behavior of the double-composite section, the effective width of the bottom concrete slab can be evaluated as that of the concrete slab under compression. The ultimate flexural strength of the bridge models verified the validity of the rigid plastic analysis of the double-composite section. Design guidelines were suggested based on the test results.

  • In designing short to medium-span bridges, continuous composite bridges are becoming popular due to their advantages. However, if the concrete slab in continuous composite bridge is not prestressed, negative moment occurs in the mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore. it must be considered in design. Two methods of arrangement of shear connectors were conducted using finite element elastic plastic analysis. Partial interaction theory was introduced and an analytical solution based on this theory was derived. The differences in the degree of interaction were investigated using analytical solutions and finite element analyses of simple composite beam and continuous composite beams. The results of the analyses were used to determine the advantage and disadvantages as well as any precaution when necessary using partial composite during actual design and construction.

  • In this paper presented, a design method of sandwich slab bridge of simple supported made by composite materials. Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special orthotropic plates. Such systems with sections, boundary conditions other than Navier or Levy solution types, or with irregular cross sections, analytical solution is very difficult to obtain. Thus, Finite Difference Method is used for analysis of the pertinent problem. For the design of bridge made by the composite materials, cross-section is used the form-core shape because of this shape is economical and profitable, and for output of the stress value used F.D.M. Based the experimental of a composite specialist, an equation expressing the rate of decrease of tensile strength of glass fibers based on increase of mass was obtained. From these equations, one can estimate the rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size. Tasi-Wu failure criterion for stress space is used. Strength-failure analysis procedure, using these reduced tensile strength, is presented.
