Recent increasing traffic volumes have made many bridges on highway be widened. Depending on the construction method of bridge widening, several undesirable problems have been arisen with the additional stresses resulting from de-staging of new bridge and the difference of the amount of creep and shrinkage between new and existing bridge. The main focus of this paper is given to investigate the variation of the adhesive strength of steel bar and construction joints of new and old concrete slab. The result shows that repeated vibration loadings was caused some bad effects on the construction joints between new and existing bridges.
The companion paper presents an analytical model to predict behaviors of PSC-Beam bridges according to continuity of spans. This paper aims at providing several examples of its application to PSC-Beam bridge. In this regard, many uncertainties affecting to the continuity of spans (such as the ultimate shrinkage strain of slab and girders, the prestressing creep of girders, and the time adopting prestressing force) are analysis in detail. Moreover, to increase the serviceability and to remove th inherent structural defects including the cracking at interior supports, a necessity for the parametric studies of PSC-Beam bridges reflecting the construction sequence is emphasized.

For the estimation of the load effects of the slab-an-girder type structures, the applicability of FEM analysis for RC T-type girder bridges using orthotropic plate elements has been studied in the present study. The present study indicates that the analysis by orthotropic plate elements for RC T-type girder bridges gives reasonable results for sectional force, including moments and shear. The results from the present method gives the values in between full composite and non-composite cases, which are reasonable when compared with actual test results.
As bridge conditions in the United States continue to deteriorate, rapid bridge replacement procedures are needed. Decked precast prestressed concrete (DPPC) girders are used for rapid bridge construction because the bridge deck is precast with the girders eliminating the need for a cast-in-place slab. One of the concerns with using DPPC girders as a bridge construction option is the durability of the longitudinal joints between girders. The objectives of this paper were to propose a method to use a spring element modeling procedure for representing welded steel connector assemblies between adjacent girders in DPPC girder bridges, perform a preliminary study of bridge performance under multiple loading scenarios and bridge configurations, and discuss model flexibility for accommodating future field data for model verification. The spring elements have potential to represent the contribution of joint grout materials by altering the spring stiffness.
Bridges are structures where safety must be ensured. Generally, the destruction mechanism of bridge deck shows punching shear. Lately, the high-strength concrete is often used to increase the lifespan of bridges. The benefits of using the high-strength concrete are that it increases the durability and strength. On the contrary, it reduces the cross-section of the bridges. This study suggested the optimal thickness of bridge deck with application of high-strength concrete and the study evaluated its structural performance experimentally. The evaluation result shows that 180 mm and 190 mm of thickness are optimal for 100 MPa and 120 MPa high-strength concrete bridge deck respectively.
This Paper deals with the analysis of both unstrengthened and strengthened prestressed concrete girder bridges. Finite element method is utilized to perform the analysis of superstructures. Based on the grillage method of analysis. emphasis is Placed on the modeling techniques for structures. The conventional grillage method of analysis is modif'=ed so that the interaction between the slab and gilder behaviors can be taken into account in the analysis A Prototype of simply supported prestressed I-type girder bridge is selected for the analysis. The results of numerical analyses are compared with those of load test. The results of analysis indicate that the proposed method of analysis gives more realistic response of bridges than the conventional grillage method.

The so-called Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis on reinforced concrete bridge can provide useful information for initial design and maintenance plan of the RC bridge. This paper proposes an LCC prediction equation and a sensitivity analysis method for RC bridges. An LCC equation for the RC bridge which includes initial investment cost, maintenance cost, and demolition cost was derived and verified from the data for design and construction of an RC slab bridge. In order to solve uncertainty problem on actual discount rate and material characteristics in the analysis of LCC of concrete bridges, a sensitivity analysis method on the LCC using the Monte Carlo simulation technique was suggested.
For the construction of open-topped steel box girder bridges, prefabricated concrete slab could offer several advantages over cast-in-situ deck including good quality control, fast construction, and elimination of the formwork for concrete slab casting. However, precast decks without reinforcements at transverse joints between precast slabs should be designed to prevent the initiation of cracking at the joints, because the performance of the joint is especially crucial for the integrity of a structural system. Several prestressing methods are available to introduce proper compression at the joints, such as internal tendons, external tendons and support lowering after shear connection. In this paper, experimental results from a continuous composite bridge model with precast decks are presented. Internal tendons and external tendons were used to prevent cracking at the joints. Judging from the tests, precast decks in negative moment regions have the whole contribution to the flexural stiffness of composite section under service loads if appropriate prestressing is introduced. The validity of the calculation of a cracking load fur serviceability was presented by comparing an observed cracking load and the calculated value. Flexural behavior of the continuous composite beam with external prestressing before and after cracking was discussed by using the deflection and strain data.

Thermal Prestressing Method for continuous composite girder bridges is a new design and construction method developed to induce initial composite stresses in the concrete slab at negative bending regions. Due to the induced initial stresses, prevention of tensile cracks at concrete slab, reduction of steel girder section, and reduction of reinforcing bars are possible. Thus, economical and construction efficiency can be improved. Method for determining optimum heating region of Thermal Prestressing Method, has not been established although such method is essential for increasing efficiency of the designing process. Trial-and-error method used in previous studies is far from efficient and more rational method for computing optimal heating region is required. In this study, efficient method for determining optimum heating region in the use of Thermal Prestressing Method is developed based on artificial neural network algorithm, which is widely adopted to pattern recognition, optimization, diagnosis, and estimation problems in various fields. Back-propagation algorithm, which is commonly used as a learning algorithm in neural network problems, is used for training of the neural network. Through case studies of 2-span continuous and 3-span continuous composite girder bridges using the developed process, the optimal heating regions are obtained.
In a railway bridge, the CRTS II slab ballastless track is subjected to interlayer connection failures, such as void under slab, mortar debonding, and fastener fracture. This study investigates the influences of interlayer connection failure on the safe operation of high-speed trains. First, a train-track-bridge coupled vibration model and a bridge-track deformation model are established to study the running safety of a train passing a deformed bridge with interlayer connection failure. For each type of the interlayer connection failure, the effects of the failure locations and ranges on the track irregularity are studied using the deformation model. Under additional bridge deformation, the effects of interlayer connection failure on the dynamic responses of the train are investigated by using the track irregularity as the excitation to the vibration model. Finally, parametric studies are conducted to determine the thresholds of additional bridge deformations considering interlayer connection failure. Results show that the interlayer connection failure significantly affects the running safety of high-speed train and must be considered in determining the safety thresholds of additional bridge deformation in the asset management of high-speed railway bridges.
