  • It is not clearly known how defects or inclusions of a low carbon steel affect a fatigue strength. We study this issue using SM15C materials. The investigation is carried out by a quantitative evaluation, and experimental findings are: (1) a fatigue limit of A series smooth specimen is 205MPa, and that of B, C, D series is 245MPa, 304MPa and 245MPa, respectively. (2) the fatigue limit varies with respects to the stress distribution I the vicinity of a defects and crack. (3) the micro hole creates a half-circular shape crack, while the hole depth is not critical to the fatigue strength, (4) considering the fatigue strength, the hole diameter is more significant than the hole depth, and (5) Fatigue limit of artificially defected specimen is lower than that of a flawless one (5-10%), however, there exist allowance size and depth of defect which don't get to influence at fatigue limit.

  • In this paper, a VSC(Voltage Sag Corrector) is discussed for the purpose of power quality enhancement. A fast detecting technique of voltage sag is accomplished through the detection of instantaneous value on synchronous reference frame. A robust characteristic against the noise is available by inserting the first order low pass filter in the detection circuit. The formula and the filter design process is described properly with the mathematical equations. Because the VSC system supply the active power to load, it is required to design the proper size of the energy storage system, In this paper, the capacitor bank is used as an energy storage system, and the size of the capacitor is designed from the point of view of input/output energy as the output power rating and the amplitude and duration time of the voltage sag. The simulation is accomplished by PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • At present, fatigue design of welded structures is primarily based on nominal stress or hot spot stress approach with a series of classified weld S-N curves. However, these methods are known to possess drawbacks, such as difficulty associated with defining proper nominal stress and the finite element sue sensitivity etc. Recently, a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition is proposed by Battelle that gives a stress state at weld toe with relatively large mesh size. The structural stress definition is based on the elementary structural mechanics theory and provides an effective measure of a stress state in front of weld toe. As an experimental validation of the structural stress method in obtaining the fatigue strength of weldments, a series of experiment is carried out for various sizes of weldments. Based on the result from this study, it is expected to develop a more precise fatigue strength evaluation technique and to save time period required in the fatigue design of ship and offshore structures.

  • In this study, fatigue limit of ductile cast iron is evaluated based on phenomena of the microscopic observation, such as matrix structure, spheroidal ratio, size of graphite and distribution. Three different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure, GCD 45-), GCD 50, GCD 60 series, all of which contain more than 70% spheroidal ratio of graphite, were used to obtain the correlation between maximum size of graphite and fatigue strength. It was concluded as fellows. (1) In Ductile cast iron of ferrite-pearlite matrix, the fatigue limit of GCD 60 series with 73% pearlite structure was the highest. (2) From observation of the starting point of crack of all specimens, it is noted that the crack initiates, in graphite, goes through ferrite and propagates into pearlite. (3) A good quality of Ductile cast iron used in this experiment can be checked from uniformly distributed graphite. The negligible interaction effect between graphites was verified by microscopic observation and fracture mechanics investigation in surface and interior of the specimen.

  • Charge equalization scheme for HEV lithium-ion battery system is proposed in this paper, where all the primary windings with in parallel bi-directional switches are coupled in series to provide the equalizing energy from the whole battery string to the specific under charged cells. Moreover, to realize minimized size of equalization circuit employing the proposed cell balancing scheme, the optimal power rating design rule according to equalization time and SOC distribution of imbalance is proposed. A prototype of HEV lithium-ion battery system of four cells shows the outstanding charge equalization performance while maintaining greatly reduced size of cell balancing circuit.

  • Artificial intelligence has emerged as the core of the 4th industrial revolution, and large amounts of data processing, such as big data technology and rapid data analysis, are inevitable. The most fundamental and universal data interpretation technique is an analysis of information through regression, which is also the basis of machine learning. Ridge regression is a technique of regression that decreases sensitivity to unique or outlier information. The time-consuming calculation portion of the matrix computation, however, basically includes the introduction of an inverse matrix. As the size of the matrix expands, the matrix solution method becomes a major challenge. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced to enhance the speed of ridge regression estimator calculation through series expansion and computation recycle without adopting an inverse matrix in the calculation process or other factorization methods. In addition, the performances of the proposed algorithm and the existing algorithm were compared according to the matrix size. Overall, excellent speed-up of the proposed algorithm with good accuracy was demonstrated.

  • It is important to consider the effect of depth when estimating the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member because the strength always decreases with an increase of member size. In this study, the size effect of reinforced concrete beam was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, a series of beam specimens subjected to 2-point bending load were tested. More specifically, three different depth (d=15, 30, and 60 cm) of reinforced concrete beams were tested to investigate the size effect. The shear-span to depth ratio (a/d=3) and thickness (20 cm) of the specimens were kept constant where the size effect in out-of-plan direction is not considered. The test results are fitted using least square method (LSM) to obtain parameters for modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results indicate that the flexural compression strength and ultimate strain decreases as the specimen size increases. Finally, more general parameters for MSEL are suggested.

  • With the development of the IoT industry, different types of time series data are being generated in various industries, and it is evolving into research that reproduces and utilizes it through re-integration. In addition, due to data processing speed and issues of the utilization system in the actual industry, there is a growing tendency to compress the size of data when using time series data and integrate it. However, since the guidelines for integrating time series data are not clear and each characteristic such as data description time interval and time section is different, it is difficult to use it after batch integration. In this paper, two integration methods are proposed based on the integration criteria setting method and the problems that arise during integration of time series data. Based on this, integration framework of a heterogeneous time series data was constructed that is considered the characteristics of time series data, and it was confirmed that different heterogeneous time series data compressed can be used for integration and various machine learning.

  • Even though the Shannon wavelet is a prototype of wavelets are assumed to have. By providing a sufficient condition to compute the size of Gibbs phe-nomenon for the Shannon wavelet series we can see the overshoot is propotional to the jump at discontinuity. By comparing it with that of the Fourier series we also that these two have exactly the same Gibbs constant.

  • Ten [$Pd^{II}$(dicarboxylato)(1, 2-diaminocyclohexane)] complexes were prepared after the antitumor-active Pt(II)1, 2-diaminocyclohexane complexes as the cisplatin analogues of palladium series. They were characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. As a result, the dicarboxylate ligands were conformed to be chelated with Pd(II) within the scope studied. The stability differences beween the dicarboxylato complexes according to the chelate ring size could not be differentiated due to generally lower thermodynamic stability of the dicarboxylato Pd(II) complexes.
