  • In this study, the size effect of concrete members subjected to the axial load and bending moment is investigated using a series of C-shaped specimens of which test procedure is similar to those of Hognestad, Hanson, and McHenry's. Main test variable is a size ratio of the specimens(1:1/2:1/4) at the concrete compressive strength of 500kg/㎠. Test results show that the flexural compression strength at failure decreases as the size of specimen increases, that is, the size effect law is present. Model equation is derived using regression analyses with experimental data and it is compared with formulas for compressive strength of cylinders and shear strength of beams without stirrups. Size effects is distinct th following sequence; shear strength of beams without stirrups, compressive strength of C-shaped specimens, compressive strength of cylinders.

  • In hydrology analysis, the result of a slope analysis for terrain have an very important effect on water quality and water quantity Recently, a slope analysis tend to use the digital elevation model rater than the traditional map sheet. But a terrain slope analysis by the digital elevation model depends on grid size of the digital elevation model. Hence the effect of a slope analysis by the digital elevation model is a important factor. In this study, therefor, in order to determine a hydrological parameter and a terrain parameter for simulation of the water quality and the hydrological property, we adapted two sample area that are the Nerin stream of the basin of the Soyang lake and a Osip stream of Samchuk, and its individual coverages are $640\;km^2$ and $33\;km^2$. Also to analyze the effect of grid size in the slope of a basin, we apply DEM changing a grid size respectively at intervals of 100 m from 100 m to 1.000m for the Nerin stream basin and at intervals of 10 m from 20 m to 300 m for the Osip stream basin.

  • This paper empirically tests pecking order theory. Korean listed firms are used as the samples. On the whole we find supportive results for pecking order theory. The fixed effect model on the whole period shows that as pecking order theory suggests that debt ratio decreases as cash flow. ROA, physical assets, and firm size increase. Again, it is shown that corporate debt ratio significantly decreases as cash flow or ROA increases in every sub-sample, which coincides with the prediction of pecking order theory. Corporate debt ratio significantly decreases as physical assets or jinn size increases in case of the whole sample, pre-financial crisis period, and the sub-samples by q-ratio, which also supports the prediction of pecking order theory. Statistical significance of the coefficients of physical assets or firm size completely disappears after Korean financial crisis. Perhaps it is because the role of physical assets or firm size as a mitigator of information asymmetry significantly weakens after the financial crisis as Korean financial market becomes more transparent. For small firms only size variable is negatively and significantly related with debt to assets. It seems that size is an important factor for smaller firms in making financing decision.

  • This paper presents an EMQ model which determines an optimal manufacturing lot size in an unreliable machine. The machine has an exponentially distributed life time, and requires a constant time to repair when it fails. We 1) derive an average cost function, 2) obtain an optimal lot size and show that it is unique, 3) carry out sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of machine parameters (life time, time to repair) to optimal lot size.

  • Particle size distribution in a Continuous Mixed Suspension Mixed Crystal Removal (CMSMPR) crystallizer has been analyzed using the Population Balance (PB) model. This method presents difficulties when the growth rate of crystal depends on the crystal size. Recent studies indicate that in many cases the growth rate is dependent on size when the crystal sizes are small. In this study, a Residence Time Distribution(RTD) model was proposed to take the size dependence into account together with an appropriate numerical scheme. When compared with the approximate results based on PB model, RTD model results showed improvements also a nucleation effect which is normally unimportant for steady state analysis. Start-up data for NaCl-Water-Ethanol system was compared with computed values.

  • An Isolation-with-Migration (IM) model is used to estimate extant population sizes, the splitting time of populations split away from their common ancestral populations, and migration rates between the extant populations. An evolutionary model such as IM models is estimated by analyzing DNA sequences sampled from the extant populations in the model. When a true model includes an unsampled 'ghost' population without data, the unsampled population is often ignored from the evolutionary model to infer. In this paper, we conduct a simulation study to investigate the effect of an unsampled population on the estimation of the size of the sampled population. When there exists an unsampled population that shares migrations with the sampled population, the size estimation of the sampled population was biased. However, the size estimation was improved if an evolutionary model, including the unsampled population, was estimated.

  • In this study, to predict the microstructure in weld HAZ of low alloyed steel, prediction model for the phase transformation considering the influence of prior austenite grain size and cooling rate was developed. For this study, six low alloyed steels were designed and the effect of alloying elements was also investigated. In order to develop the prediction model for ferrite transformation, isothermal ferrite transformation behaviors were analyzed by dilatometer system and 'Avrami equation' which was modified to consider the effect of prior austenite grain size. After that, model for ferrite phase transformation during continuous cooling was proposed based on the isothermal ferrite transformation model through applying the 'Additivity rule'. Also, start temperatures of ferrite transformation were predicted by $A_{r3}$ considering the cooling rate. CCT diagram was calculated through this model, these results were in good agreement with the experimental results. After ferrite transformation, bainite transformation was predicted using Esaka model which corresponded most closely to the experimental results among various models. The start temperatures of bainite transformation were determined using K. J. Lee model. Phase fraction of martensite was obtained according to phase fractions of ferrite and bainite.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate size effect on inelastic behavior of reinf bridge piers subjected to cyclic load. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Co Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technologr), for the analysis of reinforced concret was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressiv models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel The smeared crack app incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is conne discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same d amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. To determine th on bridge pier inelastic behavior, a 1/4-scale replicate model was also loaded for compar full-scale bridge pier behavior.

  • The classical continuum theory-based thin film model is independent of their size and the surface effect can be ignored. But the surface to bulk ratio becomes very large in nano-size structures such as nano film, nano wire and nano beam. In this case, surface effect plays an important role and its contribution of the surface effect must be considered. Molecular dynamics simulation has been a conventional way to analyze these ultra-thin structures but structures in the range between submicro and micro are difficult to analyze by classical molecular dynamics due to the restriction of computing resources and time. Therefore, in present study, the continuum-based method is considered to predict the overall physical and mechanical properties of the structures in nano-scale, especially, for the thin-film. The proposed continuum based-thin plate finite element is efficient and reliable for the prediction of nano-scale film behavior.

  • The reduction phenomena of concrete compressive strength with the size of cylinders have been very interested in, but till now the adequate. analysis technique is not fixed. Based on the existing research results. the bigger the member size is, the smaller the strengt.h is. However. the real test ~.csults reveal that the wduction rate becomes blunt and there are considerable differences between size offrct law and real results. The punposc. ofthis paper is to propose tho model equat.ion which covers the compressive strength of' cylinder specimens in case of general hight/dialnetcr ratio in terms of the size effect. he effect of maximum aggregate size on the microcrack zone was also studied, and the model equation was proposed by considering the concept of'the characteristic length. These results will also be used to predict the cornprcssivt. stxngth of various sized concrete cores sampled from existing structures.
