  • This study aims to present a three dimensional finite element model to investigate the wave propagation in a concrete filled steel tubular column (CFSC) due to transient impact load. Both the concrete and steel are regarded as linear elastic material. The impact load is simulated by a semi sinusoidal impulse. Besides the CFSC models, a concrete column (CC) model is established for comparing under the same loading condition. The propagation characteristics of the transient waves in CFSC are analyzed in detail. The results show that at the intial stage of the wave propagation, the velocity waves in CFSC are almost the same as those in CC before they arrive at the steel tube. When the waves reach the column side, the velocity responses of CFSC are different from those of CC and the difference is more and more obvious as the waves travel down along the column shaft. The travel distance of the wave front in CFSC is farther than that in CC at the same time. For different wave speeds in steel and concrete material, the wave front in CFSC presents an arch shape, the apex of which locates at the center of the column. Differently, the wave front in CC presents a plane surface. Three dimensional effects on top of CFSC are obvious, therefore, the peak value and arrival time of incident wave crests have great difference at different locations in the radial direction. High-frequency waves on the waveforms are observed. The time difference between incident and reflected wave peaks decreases significantly with r/R when r/R < 0.6, however, it almost keeps constant when $r/R{\geq}0.6$. The time duration between incident and reflected waves calculated by 3D FEM is approximately equal to that calculated by 1D wave theory when r/R is about 2/3.

  • This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends for the axial direction, and three more cases including the guided ends, the simply supported ends, and the supported-guided ends for the transverse direction. In order to investigate the effect of the boundary end conditions for the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline, we have devised a computer program to find the solutions of the formulae on the dynamic responses (displacements, axial strains, and bending strains) under the various boundary end conditions considered in this study. The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. The former is identified by a slight change in its behavior before the sinusoidal-shaped seismic wave travels along the whole length of the pipeline whereas the latter by the complete form of a sinusoidal wave when the wave travels throughout the pipeline. The transient response becomes insignificant as the wave speed increases. We have observed a resonance when the mode wavelength matches the wavelength of the seismic wave, where the mode number(k) of resonance for the axial direction is found to be $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1/2$ for the fixed-free ends, $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1$ for the free ends, and $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V$ for the fixed ends, respectively. By adding 10 more modes to the mode number(k) of resonance, we were able to study all the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline for the axial direction. On the other hand, we have not been able to observe a resonance in the analysis for the transverse direction, because the dynamic responses are found to vanish after the seventh mode. From the results of the dynamic responses at the many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement and the strain and its position.

  • In PWM inverters used in traction motor drive systems, the switching frequency is restricted by their large power capacity and thus the electromagnetic acoustic noise is generated. To reduce such an audible noise, the new MRSF-PWM(Modified Random Switching Frequency PWM) method is proposed. In the Proposed MRSF-PWM method, both triangular wave and sawtooth wave are used together as carrier waves for harmonic diffusion and reference wave is generated by injecting 3rd harmonic into the stone wave to expand the linear control region of output voltages. To verify the validity of the proposed MRSF-PWM method, computer simulations are carried out. And the results show that the MRSF-PWM method is more excellent than other RPWM methods in the aspects of both linearity and harmonic diffusion md more effective than SPWM(Sinusoidal PWM) method for the reduction of an audible noise.

  • This paper presents a cyclocoverter with a LC resonant circuit for a induction motor dr-ive. The cycloconverter can provide variab-le voltage and frequency three phase output while keeping the input displacement factor at 1.0. The input current wave forms are sinusoidal, and the wide output frequency ran-ge is appropriate for variable speed AC motor drives.

  • The paper describes a theoretical and experimental study on the speed of the torsional elastic waves propagating in an axisymmetirc waveguide whose cross-sectional area varies periodically as an harmonic function of the axial coordinate. The approximate solution of the phase speed has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of small amplitude. The experiment verifying the theoretical result consists of transmitting and receiving torsional waves by magnetostriction and measuring the wave speed in the waveguides with threaded surfaces.

  • This paper presents a novel method for measuring the ground impedance in grounding systems. A square wave current was injected to the main grounding grid through auxiliary electrode, and the test current and ground potential rise(GPR) were measured using the band-pass filter. Ground impedance was calculated from the sinusoidal waveforms of the test current and GPR in frequency range of 20~2100Hz. Also the resistance and reactance component of ground impedance were analyzed.

  • In the current-controlled PWM, the actual current tracks the sinusoidal reference wave within desired hyeteresis band. This paper au99e61s the current control scheme for voltage-fed single-phase inverter and presents the simulation results. It is expected that the inverter with this control method produces no significant lower-order harmonics.

  • A method for high impedance fault(HIF) detection based on wavelet transform is presented in this paper. HIF is detected and classified by obtaining the energy distribution curve from the wavelet coefficients at each level. The energy distribution of each transient disturbance has unique deviation from sinusoidal wave in particular energy level, which is adopted to provide reliable classification of the type of transient.
