The effects of interface boundary strength on wear and wear transition during sliding have been investigated in silicon carbide ceramics. Three different microstructures, i.e., solid state sintered silicon carbide, liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and liquid phase sintered silicon carbide composite reinforced with TiB$_{2}$ particulates, were designed by hot pressing. Examinations of crack patterns and fracture modes indicated that interface boundaries were relatively strong between silicon carbide grains in the solid state sintered silicon carbide, intermediate in the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and weak between silicon carbide grains and TiB$_{2}$ particles in the composite. Wear data and examinations of worn surfaces revealed that the wear behavior of these silicon carbide ceramics could be significantly affected by the interface strength. In the solid state sintered silicon carbide, the wear occurred by a grooving process. In the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and composite, on the other hand, an abrupt transition in wear mechanism from initial grooving to grain pull-out process occurred during the test. The transition occurred significantly earlier in the composite than in the carbide.

This paper describes the machining characteristics of the sintered carbide and die steel(STD-11) by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. Electrical discharge machining(EDM) removes material from the workpiece by a series of electrical sparks that cause localized temperatures high enough to melt or vapourize the vicinity of the charge. In the experiment. four types of electrode which have different diameter are used with the application of continuous direct current and axial electrode feed. The controlled factors include the dimension of the electrode. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to order to facilitate the removal of machining debris the hole. The expansion increase with increasing the thickness of material and the diameter of electrode and the expansion of sintered carbide is 1.75 times large then that of die steel. The taper of machined hole decrease with increasing the thickness of material. The crater sixe of die steel is larger then thet of sintered carbide and the surface roughness of sintered carbide is 1.58 tims larger then that of die steel.
Tungsten carbide has many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperature, high hardness and good chemical stability. Because tungsten carbide is difficult to sinter, it is sintered with nickel or cobalt as a binder and is currently used in nozzles, cutting tools, and molds. Alumina is reported to be a viable binder for tungsten carbide due to its higher oxidation resistance and lower cost than nickel and cobalt. The ultrafine tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites were rapidly sintered in a high frequency induction heating active sintering unit. The microstructure and mechanical properties (fracture toughness and hardness) of the composites were investigated and analyzed by Vickers hardness tester and electron microscope. Since the high-frequency induction heating sintering method enables high-speed sintering, ultrafine composites can be prepared by preventing grain growth. In the tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites, the grain size of tungsten carbide increased with the amount of alumina participation. The hardness and fracture toughness of the tungsten carbide-5% graphene- x% alumina (x = 0, 5, 10,15) composites were 5.1, 8.6, 8.6, and 8.4 MPa-m1/2 and 2384, 2168, 2165, and 2102 kg/mm2, respectively. The fracture toughness increased without a significant decrease in hardness. Sinterability was improved by adding alumina to tungsten carbide-graphene.
Systematic studies of the effects of additives and processing variables on the sintered density and the effect of crystalline forms of starting powders on the microstructure of pressureless sintered silicon carbide are described. Oxide additives were effective for the densification of SiC up to 96% of theoretical density at temperature as low as 185$0^{\circ}C$. Use of embedding powder increased the sintered density, up to 98% of theoretical density, by decreasing the weight loss during sintering. Composite type duplex microstructure has been developed due to the $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC by sintering at 185$0^{\circ}C$ and heat treatment at 195$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h.
This paper deals with determining the proper friction welding condition and analyzing mechanical in of friction welded joints of sintered carbide tool materials (SKNM50 for the blade part of press punch) to alloy steel (SCM440 for the shank part of press punch), the alloy steel to aluminum(A6061 for the interlayer material between the blade part and the shank) and sintered carbide tool materials to aluminum. And also acoustic emission test will be carried out during fiction welding to evaluate the weld quality.

Cr-C-Ni composites were synthesized in situ from elemental powders of Cr, Ni and C by high energy milling followed by reactive sintering. The milled powders with the grain size in nano-scale were pressed to compacts and sintered. During the following thermal treatment at first the chromium carbide was formed and then the $Cr_3C_2-Ni$ cermets were sintered in one cycle. The interface between the binder phase and the carbide grains of the in situ composite has a good bonding strength as it is not contaminated with oxidation films or other detrimental surface reactions.
Silicon carbide with sialon was prepared by hot pressing and transient liquid-phase sintering, and the effects of sintering atmosphere and starting phases on their microstructural characteristics were investigated. The sintered SiC with Sialon composition(Y2O3, AlN, Si3N4) in argon atmosphere had high sintered density and large aspect ratio. But sintered specimens in nitrogen atmosphere showed low aspect ratio and small grian size, becuase of the retardation of phase transformation and grain growth. Addition of Y-Sialon powder to SiC also retarded the phase transformation to ${\alpha}$-SiC from ${\beta}$-SiC and densification. The SiC specimen prepared from the starting ${\beta}$-SiC powder with Sialon composition(Y2O3, AlN, Si3N4) showed the highest fracture toughness about 6.0 MPa$.$m1/2.
${\alpha}-SiC$ powder with or without the addition of 0.1 wt% of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ partices(seeds) was pressureless-sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 2, and 4 h using $Y_3Al_5 O_{12}$ (yttrium aluminum garnet, YAG) as a sintering aid. The materials without seeds had an equiaxed grain struture. In contrast, the materials with seeds sintered for 2 and 4 h had a duplex microstructure with large elongated grains and amall equiaxed grains. Addition of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ seeds into ${\alpha}-SiC$ accelerated the grain growth of some ${\alpha}-SiC$ grains during sintering and resulted in the increased fracture toughness of the sintered materials. The fracture toughnesses of materials with or without seeds sintered for 4 h were 6.6 and $5.2 MPa \;m^{12}$, respectively.
