  • Stress singularities appear at the interface edge in dissimilar materials also under thermal loading. First, these singularities then an interface meets a free side surface with an arbitrary angle are studied for a two-dimensional problem. The singular properties under thermal loading are made clear and the concrete singular field are obtained. Secondly, the dependence of stress field on elastic constants in axisymmetric dissimilar materials are. discussed. That is, it is shown that three elastic constants mutually independent are necessary, in general, to characterize the stress field of axisymmetric dissimilar materials, although Dunders' parameters defined for two-dimensional dissimilar materials have been often applied correspondingly also to axisymmetric problems.

  • The boundary element method was used for studying singularities of an interface crack with contact zones. The iterative procedure is applied to estimate the contact zone size. Because the contact zone size was extremely small in a tension field, a large number of Gaussian points were used for numerical integration of the Kernels. Stress extrapolation method and J-integral were used ofr determining stress intensity factors. When the interface crack was assumed to have opened tips, oscillatory singularities appear near the tips of the interface crack. But the interface crack with contact zone which Comninou suggested had no oscillatory behavior. The contact zone size under shear loading was much larger than that under tensile. The stress intensity factors computed by stress extrapolation method were close to those of Comninou's solution. And the stress intensity factor evaluated by J-integral was similar to that by stress extrapolation method.

  • In this article, we proposed hybrid polarization singularity configurations, based on the superposition of two orthogonal circularly polarized components, one of which is a light beam with two optical vortices. The topological configurations are the hybridization of lowest-order polarization singularities, but are different from high-order polarization singularities. Our numerical simulation may provide a theoretical basis for expanding the variety of polarization singularity configuration.

  • Dok-Rak-Dang and Hyang-Dan, upper class houses of Chosun Dynasty on the early and mid 16th century, are generally known as specific style houses among traditional residences in Korea. Architectural singularities of these two residences are summarized as double facades, uncertain circulation, self-secluding construction, dilemmatic structure, and rotative circulation that are far from architectonic principle of that time. Characters of Deconstructionist Art, deconstruction of binary oppositions, double session, displacement without reversal, and paradox, are very similar to those of two residences both as a material phenomenon and as a metaphysical idea. Thus, this paper attempt to analyze architectural singularities of Dok-Rak-Dang and Hyang-Dan with the perspective of Deconstructionist Art Theory.

  • We present the analysis and design of a new six degree-of-freedom parallel mechanism, Eclipse-II, which can be used as a basis for general motion simulators. This mechanism allows x, y and z-axis translations and a, b and c-axis rotations. Most significantly, it presents the advantage of enabling continuous 360 degrees spinning of the platform. We first describe the computational procedures for the forward and in inverse kinematics of the Eclipse-II. Next, the complete singularity analysis is presented for the two cases of end-effector and actuator singularities. Two additional actuators are added to the original mechanism to eliminate both types of singularities with in the workspace. Some practical aspects of the prototype development are introduced.

  • This paper presents a new motion control strategy for singularity avoidance in 6 DOF articulated robot manipulators, based on a speed limiting algorithm for joint positions and velocities. For a given task, the robot is controlled so that the joints move with acceptable velocities and positions within the reachable range of each joint by considering the velocity limit. This paper aims at the development of a new efficient method to control robot motion near and at singularities. The proposed method has focused on generating the optimal joint trajectory for a Cartesian end-effector path within the speed limit of each joint by using the speed limit avoidance as well as the acceleration/deceleration scheme. The proposed method was verified using MATLAB-based simulations.

  • Applications of bonded dissimilar materials such as large scale integration (LSI) packages, ceramics/metal and resin/metal bonded joints, are very increasing in various industry fields. It is very important to analyze the thermal stress and stress singularity at interface edge in LSI. In order to investigate stress singularities on the bonded interface edges and delamination of die pad and resin in the IC package. In this paper, stress singularity factors(${\Gamma}_i$) and stress intensity factors($K_i$) considering thermal stress in the IC package were analyzed by using the 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method(BEM).

  • Since Nye and Berry$^{(1)}$ showed that in free space the electromagnetic field could contain stable, propagating phase singularities termed "dislocations", optical dislocations have been extensively investigated in nonlinear optics and laser physics. As the wave propagates, the lines of constant phase surrounding a dislocation trace out a spiral in space or in time. So these phase singularities are now usually referred to as optical vortices. Baranova and her co-workers$^{(2)}$ have shown that in fully developed speckle patterns, there is, one optical vortex accompanying each speckle spot on average. Among these vortices there are networks in phasemap because only one phase is to be assigned in one point except optical dislocations having zero amplitude. Freund et al.$^{(3)}$ have been studied optical dislocation networks and simulations are compared with experimental results. (omitted)

  • In this paper, it is demonstrated that, with the distribution of lowest order concentrated(discrete) singularities of delta function nature, the solution to the linear free surface problem can be obtained with a remarkable degree of accuracy. The linear boundary value problem is formulated subject to boundary conditions for the determination of strengths of singularities; the simple sources above(not on) the free surface and the vortices on the body surface. Three sample calculation were performed` the flow about a submerged vortex of known strength, the flow past a submerged circular cylinder, and the flow around a hydrofoil section. The convergence of the numerical procedure is achieved with a relatively small number of elements. The final results are compared with those of the published works, and are considered very satisfactory.
