  • The adhesive bonded single-lap joint is due to its intrinsic load eccentricity problem, severe peel stresses concentration occur at both end of the joint. In this paper, new lap-joint is designed to avoid the singular peel stress, and to compare the stresses of the middle adhesive layer between the single-lap joint and the wavy-lap joint. Two adherend lay-up, i.e., [90/0/90/0]$_{2s}$ and [0/90/0/90]$_{2s}$ were consider in the study.

  • Due to intrinsic load eccentricity, severe peel stress concentration occurs at both ends of the single-lap joint. To avoid load eccentricity as well as the singular tensile peel stress in the joint interface, composite wavy-lap joint is proposed. In this paper, refined 3-D stress analysis of wavy-lap joint is performed by finite element method using parallel mutifrontal solver. Analysis results show that the singular tensile peel stress concentration is totally avoided in wavy-lap joint, and that loads are more evenly transferred over the length of the joint. Therefore, the strength of wavy-lap joint is significantly higher than that of conventional single-lap joint. And it is believed that even higher strengths can be obtained by optimizing the new design configuration.

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite meterial in aircraft space structures and robot arms, the design and manufacture of composite joints have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structure. In this paper, the torque transmission capacities of the adhesive tubular single lap joint and double lap joint were studied. The stress and torque transmission capacity of the adhesive joints were analyzed by the finite element method and compared to the experimental results. The torque capacity of the double lap joint was increased 2.7 times over that of the single lap joint. Also, the fatigue limit of the double lap joint was increased 16 times over that of the single lap joint.

  • In this study, bearing response in single lap riveted joint is investigated by menas of single lap shear specimens with different types of adherend and fastener. Single lap shear specimen consists of adherend of SUS403 and carbon fabric/epoxy composite. Rivet of Avdel 2691 with 9.6mm diameter is used. Two types of fastener in single lap riveted joint are considered. One is a single lap shear specimen with single fastener, and the other is a single lap shear specimen with double fasteners. Especially, in case of single lap shear specimen with single fastener, the width of the specimen is varied as 2D, 3D, 4D, 6D at a fixed edge distance of 3D. Also the edge distance of the specimen is varied as 1.0D, 1.5D, 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D at a fixed width of 4D. In case of single lap shear specimen with double fasteners, two types of specimen are considered. One is a specimen with the width of 6D and edge distance of 3D. The other is a specimen with the width of 4D and edge distance of 2D. Here D designates the hole diameter for riveted joint.

  • The stresses and torque transmission capabilities of adhesively bonded circular, hexagonal and elliptical lap joints were analyzed by the finite element and compared with the experimental results. The adherends of the joints were composed of carbon fiber/epoxy composite shafts and steel shafts. In calculating the torque transmission capabilities, the linear laminate properties of the composite material and the nonlinear shear properties of the adhesive were used. Using this method, the torque transmission capabilities of adhesively bonded lap joints could be obtained within 10% error compared to the experimental results except some single lap joints. The experiments revealed that the hexagonal joint had the best torque transmission capability from the single lap joints and the double lap joint had better torque transmission than the single lap joint.

  • 적층 복합재의 특성상 두께 방향 물성이 취약하여 비틀림, 저속충격, 피로 하중 등 복합 하중을 받게 되면 재료 내부의 미세크랙 진전을 통해 층간분리 현상이 발생하게 된다. 이를 방지하고자 Z-pinning, Stitching 등 다양한 3차원 보강 공법과 구조물의 미세균열을 실시간으로 검출하는 구조 건전성 감시 기법이 꾸준히 연구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 I-fiber 스티칭 공법으로 보강된 Single-lap joint를 Co-curing 방법으로 제작하였으며, 제작된 시편의 강도 및 파손신호 검출 특성을 평가하였다. 균열과 파손신호 검출을 위하여 전기저항법과 AE법을 사용하였으며, 신호분석을 위한 전용회로를 제작하여 인장시험 중의 파손신호를 분석하였다. 실험결과, I-fiber 스티칭으로 보강된 Single-lap joint 시편은 보강이 없는 Co-cured single-lap joint 시편에 비해 강도가 약 44.6% 향상되었다. 또한, I-fiber로 보강된 Single-lap joint 시편은 강도 향상과 더불어 전기저항법과 AE법에 의한 파손 검출이 모두 가능하므로 파손 모니터링에도 효과적인 구조임을 확인하였다.

  • The bonding strength evaluation of light weight materials for electrical vehicle applications has been performed through single lap joint tests in which the design parameters such as fillet, joint style, adherend, bonding overlap length,bonding thickness, and environmental condition(soaking time in $25^{\circ}C$ water) are considered. It is experimentally oberved that lap shear strength of joint increases for higher fillet height, longer overlap length, and thinner bonding layer thickness. Al-Al adherend combination shows much higher lap shear strength than AL-FRP and FRP-FRP adherend combinations. Riveting at adhesive bonded joint of AL-AL adherend combination makes lap shear strength decrease. Effect of soaking time on lap shear strength is negligible.

Effect of Joint Reformation on Adhesive Strength of 6061 Aluminum Alloy to Polycarbonate Lap Structures

  • Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5mm/min. As a result, the load distribution showed a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.

원형 이중겹치기 접착조인트의 해석해에 관한 연구 (An Analytic Study for the Adhesively Bonded Tubular Double Lap Joint)

  • The adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint has better torque transmission capability and reliability in bonding operation than the single lap joint. In this paper, an analytic solution for the torque transmission capabilities and stress distributions of the adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint was derived assuming the linear properties of the adhesive and adherends. From the calculation, it was found that the torque transmission capabilities of the double lap joint was more than 40% larger compared to that of the single lap joint.

  • Recently, automobile industry has led to increasing use of aluminum alloy for weight reduction. Automobile made of aluminum alloy can be given lighter, stronger and a harder surface by anodizing than one made of steel-alloy. In this paper, we investigate the influence of lap length, adherend thickness and adhesive thickness on adhesive strength of single-lap adhesive joints by conducting tensile-shear tests. Single-lap adhesive joints of aluminum was calculated using joint factor by using adhesive length, adherend thickness of specimen.
