Scrratia. Bacillus. E. coil.
A new method for the catadioptric omnidirectional stereo vision with single camera is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses a concave lens with a convex mirror. Since the optical part of the proposed method is simple and commercially available, the resultant omnidirectional stereo system becomes versatile and cost-effective. The closed-form solution for 3D distance computation is presented based on the simple optics including the reflection and the reflection of the convex mirror and the concave lens. The compactness of the system and the simplicity of the image processing make the omnidirectional stereo system appropriate for real-time applications such as autonomous navigation of a mobile robot or the object manipulation. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, an experimental prototype is implemented.
Depth calculation of objects in a scene from images is one of the most studied processes in the fields of image processing, computer vision, and photogrammetry. Conventionally, depth is calculated using a pair of overlapped images captured at different view points. However, there have been studies to calculate depths from a single image. Theoretically, it is known to be possible to calculate depth using the diameter of CoC (Circle of Confusion) caused by defocus under the assumption of a thin lens model. Thus, this study aims to verify the validity of the thin lens model to calculate depth from edge blur amount which corresponds to the radius of CoC. For this study, a commercially available DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera was used to capture a set of target sheets which had different edge contrasts. In order to find out the pattern of the variations of edge blur against varying combination of FD (Focusing Distance) and OD (Object Distance), the camera was set to varying FD and target sheet images were captured at varying OD under each FD. Then, the edge blur and edge displacement were estimated from edge slope profiles using a brute-force method. The experimental results show that the pattern of the variations of edge blur observed in the target images was apart from their corresponding theoretical amounts derived under the thin lens assumption but can still be utilized to calculate depth from a single image for the cases similar to the limited conditions experimented under which the tendency between FD and OD is manifest.
This paper presents a new method for redistributing effectively the first orders of each lens element to achromatize and athermalize an optical system, by introducing a novel method for adjusting the slope of an achromatic and athermal line. This line is specified by connecting the housing, equivalent single lens, and aberration-corrected point on a glass map composed of available plastic and glass materials for molding. Thus, if a specific lens is replaced with the material characterized by the chromatic and thermal powers of an aberration-corrected point, we obtain an achromatic and athermal system. First, we identify two materials that yield the minimum and maximum slopes of the line from a housing coordinate, which specifies the slope range of the line spanning the available materials on a glass map. Next, redistributing the optical first orders (optical powers and paraxial ray heights) of lens elements by moving the achromatic and athermal line into the available slope range of materials yields a good achromatic and athermal design. Applying this concept to design a mobile-phone camera lens, we efficiently obtain an achromatic and athermal system with cost-effective material selection, over the specified temperature and waveband ranges.
A new compact conformal dome optical system was established, and the aberration characteristics of the dome were investigated using Zernike aberration theory. The aberrations induced by the dome at different fields of regard (FORs) from 30° to 100° were effectively balanced by a rotating cylindrical lens. This kind of optical system can be widely used in top-view optical searching devices. A design method was introduced and the optimization results analyzed in detail. The results showed that the Zernike aberrations produced by the conformal dome were decreased dramatically. Also, a complete conformal optical system was designed, to further illustrate the aberration correction effect of the rotating cylindrical lens. Using a cylindrical lens not only provided a large FOR, but also simplified enormously the structure of the conformal optical system.
This study is aimed at investigating the thermal behavior of immersion-cooled high power LED lighting engines. 3D CFD models have been generated for the numerical analysis. Five cases in terms of the configuration of LED chips have been explored for various passive cooling conditions of the lighting engine, i.e., the natural air convection with a lens, the natural air convection without a lens, the deionized water-immersion cooling condition with a lens. The numerical study reveals that the deionized water-immersion cooled lighting engine has nearly twice better thermal performance than the natural air convection cooled lighting engine containing a lens. The investigation has also demonstrated that the four chips configuration has the better thermal performance than the single chip configuration.
We present a graphical method for determining a pair of optical materials and powers to design an achromatic and athermal lens system with corrected Petzval curvature. To graphically obtain the solutions, a three-dimensional (3D) glass chart is proposed. Even if a particular material combination is unavailable, we can select an element suitable for a specific lens and continuously change the element powers of an equivalent single lens for aberrations correction. Thus, we can iteratively identify the materials and powers on a 3D glass chart. By designing a fisheye lens using this method, an achromatic and athermal system with flat Petzval curvature is obtained, over the specified waveband and temperature ranges.
