The optical performance of the mirror for satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. In order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this research, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. In case of the materials which show nearly incompressible behavior such as space adhesives, it is important to measure shear modulus which governs deviatoric stress components. Shear moduli of the adhesives are determined by using single lap adhesively bonded joint. For the shear tests, several points have been selected from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ which is operating temperature range of the adhesive. The shear modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity. The analysis results of RMS wavefront error w.r.t shear modulus are presented.

The joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the thick aluminum-aluminum joint specimens and thick composite-aluminum single lap adhesive joint specimens were manufactured and the tensile tests were performed. The fracture mode of each specimen was investigated and the modified damage zone theory based on the yield strain was proposed and compared with experimental failure load of each mode. The failure loads of the thick aluminum-aluminum joint and composite-aluminum joint were predicted by the same failure criterion and they could be predicted to within 19.3% using the damage zone ratio method for all 14 cases investigated.
Self-bonding strength developed at the interface of amorphous PEEK films is highly sensitive to the processing variables(time, temperature, and pressure) during the bonding process. In order to examine the effects of these processing variables, amorphous PEEK films were bonded at various bonding conditions and the resultant interfacial bond strengths were measured using a modified single lap-shear test. Experimental results showed that the developed self-bonding strength increases with increase in bonding temperature and is directly proportional to the bonding time raised to the 1/4 power. The applied pressure seems only to produce better wetting at the beginning stage of the bonding process. Conclusively, the self-bonding of amorphous PEEK films provides a great potential for developing excellent bond strength approaching the strength of the parent material without any adhesives in structural applications.

Titanium (Ti) metal and its alloys are desirable materials for ship hulls and other ocean structures because of their high strength, corrosion-resistance and light weight properties. And light weight and corrosion-resistant aluminum (Al) is the ideal metal for shipbuilding. The joining of Ti and Al dissimilar metals is one of the effective methode to reduce weight of the structures. Ti and Al have great differences in materials properties, and intermetallic compounds such as $Ti_3Al$, TiAl, $TiAl_3$ are easily formed at the contacting surface between Ti and Al. Thus, dissimilar welding and joining of Ti and Al are considered to be very difficult. However, it was clarified that ultra-high speed welding could suppress the formation of intermetallic compounds in the previous study. Results of tensile shear strength increases with an increase in the welding speed, and therefore extremely high welding speed (50 m/min) is good to dissimilar weldability for Ti and Al. In this study, therefore, full penetration dissimilar lap welding of Ti (upper) - Al (lower) and Al (upper) - Ti (lower) with single-mode fiber laser was tried at ultra-high welding speed, and the microstructure of the interface zones in the dissimilar Al and Ti weld beads was investigated.
The objective of our study is to analyze the behavior of bonded, riveted and hybrid (bonded / riveted) steel / steel assemblies by tensile tests and to show the advantage of a hybrid assembly over other processes. the finite element method with the ABAQUS numerical code was used to model the fracture behavior of the different assemblies. Cohesive zone models (CZM) have been adopted to model crack propagation in bonded joints using a bilinear tensile separation law implemented in the ABAQUS finite element code. The riveted assemblies were modeled with the XFEM damage method identified in this ABAQUS numerical code. Both CZM and XFEM methods are combined to model hybrid assemblies. The results are consistent with the experimental results and make it possible to guarantee the validity of the applied numerical model. The use of a hybrid assembly shows a high resistance compared to other conventional methods, where the number of rivets has been highlighted. The use of the hybrid assembly improves mechanical strength and increases service life compared to a single lap joint and a riveted joint.

The objectives of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of some adhesive joints. The criteria of feel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of some adhesive joint(butt joint, T -shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with intensity of stress singularity ' $K_{prin.}$' when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity ' $K_{prin.}$&apso; can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress doesn't show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.'t show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.

Single lap-shear joints (SLJ) specimens with and without partial round fillets were fabricated to measure the average shear strength of adhesives. The effects of the length of the adherend on the SLJ specimens were also investigated. An epoxy adhesive was used to bond aluminum alloy. Tensile tests were performed on the adhesive bulk specimens to measure the mechanical properties. The finite element analysis (FEA) method was used to measure the adhesive stress distributions, i.e., the peel and shear stresses, on the bonded part. The experimental results revealed that the specimen consisting short length of adherend and without the partial round fillets exhibited the smallest average shear strength of adhesive among the investigated specimens. FEA revealed that the low average shear strength for the specimen with a short adherend length was caused by high stress concentrations on the adhesive at the edge of the bonded part.
In this study, thermoplastic composites were manufactured using a thermoplastic resin (PEEK) with the same melting temperature and a highly heat-resistant carbon UD tapes with different carbon fibers (Type A, Type B). And the bonding characteristics and mechanical characteristics of each of the two produced thermoplastic composites by induction heating welding were examined. The bonding characteristics and mechanical characteristics of the thermoplastic composites were performed using C-Scan and B-Scan, which is a non-destructive inspection, and the single lap shear test, respectively. The temperature of the carbon composites surface was monitored using a thermal image camera.

This study investigates the effect of curing method on the bonding strength of aluminum/CFRP composites. The surface of aluminum panel was treated by DC plasma. Lap shear tests and T-peel tests were performed based on the procedure of ASTM 906-94a and ASTMD1876-95, respectively. Test samples were fabricated by using the co-curing method and the secondary curing method. The results showed that the shear strength of test samples made by the co-curing method was 2.5 times greater than that of test samples made by the secondary curing method. The T-peel strength of the co-curing method case was almost 2 times greater than that of the secondary curing method case.

Seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) column bent piers to bidirectional seismic loadings was investigated experimentally. RC column bent piers represent one of the most popular forms of piers used in highway bridges. Further to series of previous experimental researches for the performance of single bridge columns subjected to seismic loadings, four column bent piers were constructed in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Each pier has two circular supporting columns. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Bidirectional lateral loadings were applied. The test parameters included: different transverse reinforcement contents and lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Test results indicate that lap-splices of longitudinal reinforcing steels have significantly influence on hysteretic response of column bent piers. Column capacity changed with the level of transverse confinement, and bidirectional repeated loadings induced more strength and stiffness degradation than unidirectional repeated loading.
