Single fiber pull-out technique has been commonly used to characterize the mechanical behavior of interface in fiber reinforced composite materials. An improved analysis considering the effects of transversely isotropic properties of fiber and the effects of thermal residual stresses in both radial and axial directions along the fiber/matrix interface is developed for the single fiber pull-out test. Although the stress transfer properties across the interface is not much affected by considering the transversely isotropic properties of fiber, interfacial debonding is notably encouraged by the effect. The interfacial shear stress that plays an important role in interfacial debonding is very much affected by the component of axial thermal residual stress in the bonded region, which can induce a two-way debonding mechanism.
In this work, an Ar+ beam was irradiated on carbon fiber surfaces to improve the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the resulting composites using an ion assisted reaction (IAR) method h single fiber pull-out test was executed to investigate the basic characteristics of the single Carbon fiber/matrix interface. Based on Greszczuk's geometrical model, the debonding force for pull-out of the fiber from the resins was discussed with the applied ion beam energy as a result, it was known that an ion beam treatment produced the functional groups on fiber surface and etching lines along the fiber axis direction, resulting in increasing the adhesion forces between fibers and matrix, which caused the improvement of the IFSS in a composite system. And, it was also found that the maximum IFSS was shown at 0.8 keV ion beam energy in this system.

It is well known that the bond characteristics of fiber govern the performance of fiber reinforced composite material. A preliminary study was carried out to investigate the pull-out behavior of amorphous and conventional single fiber in cement mortar in accordance with the JCI(Japan Concrete Institute) SF-8. The test was performed under displacement control, and results showed that the bond strength decreased with increasing fiber length. In addition, the amorphous steel fiber showed much higher pull-out load per unit weight compared to conventional steel fiber.

This research performed single fiber pull-out test to evaluate the effect between fineness modulus of cement composites and the fiber bond performance (bond strength and pull-out energy). A synthetic fiber (polypropylene) and a steel fiber (hooked ends type) were inserted in the middle of dog bone shape specimens which were designed with fine aggregates of F. M. 1.96, 2.69, 3.43. The experiment results showed bond strength and pullout energy of synthetic fiber are improved as fineness modulus of cement composites increases. It is considered that the frictional resistance between synthetic fiber and cement composite increases as fineness modulus of cement composite increases and consume more energy while pull out the fiber from cement composite. However bond performance of steel fiber which resist pull out by mechanical behavior is less effected on fineness modulus of cement composite. It is considered that the mechanical fixedness of hooked ends exerts a greater effect on the pullout resistance than the frictional resistance between the cement composite and the steel fiber so F. M. of fine aggregate has a relatively small effect on the pullout resistance with the steel fiber.

The purpose of present paper is to investigate a fracture characteristics of the finite-width single-edge-notch(SEN) carbon fiber/epoxy reinforced plastics(CFRP) plates by using an acoustic emission(AE). Uni-directionally oriented 10 plies CFRPs specimen which had different notch length were prepared for monotonic tensile test. Matrix cracking appeared over whole testing process and fiber breaking appeared later on mainly Load distribution factor of the matrix confirmed that increased according as increases of plate width ratio. The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix cracking, disbonding, interfacial delamination, fiber pull-out, fiber breaking, and etc. In the result of AE amplitude distribution analysis, matrix cracking, fiber disbonding or interfacial delamination, and fiber pull-out or fiber breaking signal correspond to <65dB, <75dB, and <90dB respectively, Also, changes of the slope of cumulative AE energy represented crazing phenomena or degradation of materials.

In this paper, single fiber pull-out test is used to measure the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite with temperature. Fiber and matrix of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite are respectively $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and epoxy resin. To strengthen the interfacial bonding shear stress, various surface treatments are used. They are the hand-sanded surface treatment, the acid etched surface treatment and the silane coupled surface treatment etc.. The interfacial bonding shear strength of surface treated shape memory alloy fiber is greater than that of surface untreated shape memory alloy fiber by from 10% to 16%. It is assured that the hand-sanded surface treatment and the acid etched surface treatment are the best way to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory composite. The best treatment condition of surface is 10% HNO$_3$ solution in the etching method to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite.
Interfacial shear strength between epoxy and carbon fiber has been analyzed utilizing the microbond specimen with an epoxy micro-droplet adhered onto single carbon fiber. The interfacial shear stress distributions along the fiber/matrix interface were calculated by finite element analysis using three kinds of finite element models such as droplet model, circular-crosssection model and pull-out model. Conclusions were obtained as follows. (1) Interfacial shear stress distribution showed that larger stresses were concentrated in the fiber/matrix interface for microbond test than for pull-out test. Thus, debonding at the fiber/matrix interface during microbond test was liable to occur at low load level. (2) Microbond test showed higher interfacial strength which was caused by various effects of micro-droplet geometry and size as well as stress concentration in the region contacting with the micro-vise tip.

This study is to investigate a damage estimation of single edge notched tensile specimens as a function of acoustic emission(AE) according to the uni-directionally oriented carbon fiber/epoxy composites, CFRP In fiber reinforced composite materials, AE signals due to several types of failure mechanisms are typically observed. These are due to fiber breakage, fiber pull-out matrix cracking, delamination, and splitting or fiber bundle breaking. And these are usually discriminated on the basis of amplitude distribution, event counts, and energy related parameters. In this case, AE signals were analyzed and classified 3 regions by AE event counts, energy and amplitude for corresponding applied load. Bath-tub curve shows 3 distinct periods during the lifetime of a single-edge-notch(SEN) specimen. The characterization of AE generated from CFRP during SEN tensile test is becoming an useful tool f3r the prediction of damage failure or/and failure mode analysis.
To improve the interfacial bonding of carbon fiber-nylon 6 composite, carbon fiber(CF) were oxidized by nitric acid treatment, and two types of graft polymer(GP) of nylon 6-g-polyacrylamide (PAAm) -water dispersable GP(WDGP) and m-cresol solu ble GP(CSGP) were treated as coupling agents. Introduction of polar groups such as -COOH, -OH, etc, on the surface of the oxidized CF was confirmed by IR spectra. The stem polymer of nylon 6 in the coupling agent (GP) could be compatible with'matrix nylon 5, and the grafted branch of PAAm on GP could react to the polar groups on the oxidized CF in composite. The interfacial strength was measured by the transverse tensile test to the fiber direction for single CF embedded nylon 6 film especially prepared and by the pull-out test method. The interfacial strength of the composite reinforced with oxidized CF is greater than that reinforced with unoxidized CF. The interfacial strength of the composite was increased by treatment of coupling agents(GPs) considerably, and the increasing tendency by the WDGP is greater than that by the CSGP. The optimum conditions of coupling agent treatment are as follows: the concentration, adsorption tlme of GP, and curing temperature are 2%, 20 minutes, and $170^{\circ}$, respectively.
