  • Objective : A few anecdotal cases of mesenchyme-derived tumors which grow into a cranial cavity have been reported that disclosed a dismal prognosis, due to their critical location, aggressive biological behavior, and high rate of surgical morbidity. The aim of this study is to search clinical factors related to these tumors. Methods : Eight patients who underwent surgical removal of intracranial mesenchymal tumors between January 1993 and December 1997 were studied retrospectively. The tumors included are three chordomas, two chondrosarcomas, two rhabdomyosarcomas, and one hemangiopericytoma. Authors compared clinical features, treatment, and results of our cases with reported cases. The mean follow-up period was 20.5 months. Results : All cases showed nonspecific, location-related clinical findings and arose from sphenopetroclival region. Single stage operation was performed in 4 cases, and skull base approaches in 3 cases. Adjuvant therapies were done in 2 cases. Recurrence was seen in 3 cases(37.5%), and 3 patients died. Interdisciplinary approach with otologic surgeon was done in 2 cases. Conclusion : Recent advancement of refined tactics has made these tumors amenable and provides prolongation of progression-free survival. These are modified skull base approaches, multi-modality treatment options, and inter-disciplinary team approaches. Good results may be expected for these mesenchymal tumors by aggressive resection and adjuvant therapies according to their biological nature.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the potential of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) to inhibit 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary carcinogenesis in rats. Female Sprague Dawley rats were fed a control diet (NC and DC) or an ethanol extract of turmeric (DT) diet until the end of the experiment. The rats in the DC and DT groups were administered a single dose of DMBA (50 mg/Kg) by oral gavages at 50 days of age. The turmeric ethanol extracts decreased the incidence and multiplicity of DMBA-induced mammary tumor. The turmeric ethanol extract significantly decreased the tumor cell proliferation. The turmeric also significantly decreased the tumor grade based on the degree of the tubule formation. The results suggest that the ethanol extract of turmeric has an inhibitory effect against mammary carcinogenesis, and that such chemopreventive effect may be related to the inhibition of the initiation and the proliferation of tumor cells.

  • In this study, the mechanical behavior and interface properties of boron nitride nanotube-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites are predicted using the molecular dynamics simulations and the double inclusion model. After modeling nanocomposite unit cell embedding single-walled nanotube and polymer, the stiffness matrix is determined from uniaxial tension and shear tests. Through the orientation average of the transversely isotropic stiffness matrix, the effective isotropic elastic constants of randomly dispersed microstructure of nanocomposites. Compared with the double inclusion model solution with a perfect interfacial condition, it is found that the interface between boron nitride nanotube and polymer matrix is weak in nature. To characterize the interphase surrounding the nanotube, the two step domain decomposition method incorporating a linear spring model at the interface is adopted. As a result, various combinations of the interfacial compliance and the interphase elastic constants are successfully determined from an inverse analysis.

  • Issues related to the elderly have been recognized in Korea and nursing schalors have tried to study these issues. It is hard to say which the direction we, are going or have to go, since there has been little systemic effort to establish gerontological nursing field yet. Therefore, it is necessary to find out the trend and the guidelines of gerontolotical nursing studies for the future. Dissertation and published articles related to the elderly in the nursing field from 1991 to the Feburary of 1997 were are reviewed. Total 127 studies were analysed in terms of concept, design/methodology, and results, and the nature and issues of the gerontologic nursing studies in Korea were explored. The results are as follows : 1. There was no clear chronological definition of the elderly. 2. The most popular research design was an exploratory/descriptive study. 3. The major concepts studied were physical and mental health. 4. Among those studies using instruments which were developed and modified and/or translated by researchers, the reliability and validity were rarely reported. 5. Theory based studies were rare. We suggest the following issues for future studies : 1. The chronological and other criteria related to the defition of elderly is needed. 2. Physiopsychosocial characteristics of Korean elderly and their mangements in terms of intervention studies need to be conducted more systemically. 3. Social issues from the change of types and functions of family such as single elderly family need to be studied. 4. Participation in and collaborate with other disciplins are needed. 5. Development and test of instruments to measure phenomena or concepts is needed. 6. Macroscopic approach such as policy also needed. 7. Theory based studies are needed.

  • The feasibility of the particle-in-cell (PIC) method is assessed to simulate the non-collective phenomena like non-collective Thomson scattering (TS). The non-collective TS in the laser-plasma interaction, which is related to the single-particle behavior, is simulated through a 2D relativistic PIC code (XOOPIC). For this simulation, a non-collective TS is emitted from a 50-50 DT plasma with electron density and temperature of ne = 3.00 × 1013 cm-3 and Te = 1000 eV, typical for the edge plasma at ITER measured by ETS system, respectively. The wavelength, intensity, and FWHM of the laser applied in the ETS system are λi,0 = 1.064 × 10-4 cm, Ii = 2.24 × 1017 erg=s·㎠, and 12.00 ns, respectively. The electron density and temperature predicted by the PIC simulation, obtained from the TS scattered wave, are ne,TS = 2.91 × 1013 cm-3 and Te,TS = 1089 eV, respectively, which are in accordance with the input values of the simulated plasma. The obtained results indicate that the ambiguities rising due to the contradiction between the PIC statistical collective mechanism caused by the super-particle concept and the non-collective nature of TS are resolved. The ability and validity to use PIC method to study the non-collective regimes are verified.

  • We propose a three-year Key Science Program (KSP) consisting of VLBI monitoring observations and single dish (SD) rapid response observations (RRO). The VLBI monitoring observations are comprised of ten 24-hr observations per year (every month) of about 30 gamma-ray brigt active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with Korea VLBI Network (KVN) at 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz. The SD RROs may consist of twelve 7-hr observations per source (every week for 3 months after triggering) of gamma-ray flaring sources with two KVN SD telescopes at 22, 43, and 86 GHz in dual polarization. We expect one or two sources per year for the SD RROs. Gamma-ray flares of AGNs are known to be occured in innermost regions of relativistic jets which radiate in whole ranges of electromagnetic spectra due to synchrotron radiation, syschrotron self absorption, inverse-compton scttering, doppler boosting etc. Possible explanations of the gamma-ray flares in AGNs are a) shocks-in-jets propagating within jet flow and b) bending of the whole jets. For both cases, we should expect changes in polarization, luminosity, particle distribution, and structures of jets at mas-scale. The multifrequency simultaneous VLBI/SD observations with KVN are the best tool for detecting such changes correlated with gamma-ray flares. This KSP proposal aims to answer the fundamental questions about the basic nature of the flares of AGNs.

  • Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and antimicrobial effects of glycerol monolaurate (monolaurin) and organic acids, either alone or in combination, against Escherichia coli O157:H7 in tryptic soy broth were determined. MIC values of monolaurin(ML), acetic (AA), citric (CA), lactic (LA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) were 300$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL (0.03%), 1250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL(0.125%), 5000$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL(0.5%), 2500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL(0.25%) and 2500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL(0.25), respectively. When 150$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL of ML was combined with 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL AA, 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL HCl and 125$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL LA, the combined agents did not increase the inhibitory effect of the most active single compound alone. This result indicates that there was little interaction between ML and A, HCl and LA. However, the combination of 150$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL ML and 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL CA synergistically inhibited growth of E. coli O157:H7. The present study showed that the nature of combined antimicrobial response against E. coli O157:H7 was complex, but this information would be useful for determining interaction that could compromise effectiveness in food systems.

  • Objectives: Asari Herba comes from the dried perennial herbaceous plant, Asarum sieboldii $M_{IQ}$., A. heterotropides $F_R$. SCHMIDT var. mandshuricum($M_{AXIM}$) $K_{ITAG}$. and A sieboldii $M_{IQ}$ var. seoulense $N_{AKAI}$., family Aristolochiaceae. This medicine is pungent in flavor(味辛), warm in nature(性溫), mildly toxic and affects the lung, kidney, and heart meridians. It is able to repel wind dispel cold(祛風散寒), remove the obstruction of the nose(宣通鼻竅), relieve pain(止痛) and warm the lungs to remove the retention of fluids(溫肺化飮). In a clinic it is prescribed for exterior syndrome of wine-cold type(風寒表證) manifested as headache and general pain. It is indicated for headaches, toothaches, bisyndrome of wind-cold-dampness type(風寒濕痺), etc. For many generations medical books have warned doctors that the dosage of Asari Herba should not be excessive because the pungent flavor has the effect of dispersing exopathogens from superficies of the body. The principle, 'Asari Herba should not exceed Jeon(錢, Qian, 3.0 gram)' is still considered to be relevant. Methods : Extensive research of several ancient medical texts has lead to the following conclusion. Results : The statement 'Asari Herba should not exceed Jeon' is a dosage which is used to prepare single recipe and powder. Conclusion : The definition of Jeon is not 1 Jeon(3.0 gram), but 1 Jeonbi(錢匕, Qianbi, 1.0 gram), moreover, the usage, collection. and refinement process are not in accordance with the contents of the ancient medical texts. A deeper study of Asari Herba's dosage in the future is expected to have interesting results.

  • Digital Ecosystem is a new word for dynamic IT business environments. Digital Ecosystem can consist of various enterprise federations such as competing, collaborating and stable or unstable ones. They make it difficult to implement identity management for the environment. Existing solutions are either too restricting and inflexible to support the dynamic nature of ecosystems since they are too complex and difficult to adopt. This paper is to propose an distributed identity management model for automated processing of identity information between ecosystems. It is featured with being practical, clear and easy to deploy. And it is based on the new OASIS SAML3.0 standard to provide interoperability between existing identity technologies. This paper presents the basic and extended identity model for single service and multiple services. The model presented in this paper can be applied to enterprise context easily.

  • The Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) is a network localized mobility management protocol that is independent of global mobility management protocols. In a single mobility domain (LMD), the mobile node (MN) is not involved in any IP mobility-related signaling and uses only its PMIPv6 home address for all its communication. Subsequently, when the MN moves into another LMD, the MN must change its PMIPv6 home address. In such a circumstance, host-based mobility signaling is activated. Thus, the nature of the network-based mobility of the PMIPv6 cannot be retained. Additionally, if the MN does not support global mobility, it cannot maintain communication with its correspondent node (CN). In this paper, we propose a solution for global mobility support in PMIPv6 networks, called Global-PMIPv6 that allows current communication sessions of a MN without mobility protocol stacks to be maintained, even when the MN moves into another LMD. Thus, Global-PMIPv6 retains the advantages of the PMIPv6 for global mobility support. We then evaluate and compare network performance between our proposed solution and PMIPv6.
