  • In this study, the major operating factors in SND(simultaneous nitrification and denitrification) using bioreactor packed with submerged cilia media and granular sulfur such as variation of nitrification rate, organic matter removal efficiency and denitrification efficiency in different DO concentration were mainly evaluated. Synthetic wastewater and actual sewage were used as influent wastewater. Experiment with synthetic wastewater as influent wastewater was divided into three phases with the adjustment of DO concentration. As the results, nitrification efficiency and T-N removal efficiency in the Phase 3(DO 1.0~2.0 mg/L) were 99% and 52.3%, which is significantly greater than those in other two phases. Also, loading rate and denitrification efficiency of SCPGS(Submerged Cilia media Packed with Granular Sulfur) were calculated as $0.44kg\;NO_3^--N/m^3-day$ and 50%, respectively. On the other hand, nitrification rate was decreased from 99% to 64% according to the DO concentration with the variation from 3.0~3.5 mg/L(phase1) to 0.4~0.6mg/L(phase2). Although the nitrification rate was decreased in 64% according to the variation of the DO concentration, T-N removal rate was rapidly increased to 49% by increasing of the denitrification efficiency. Experiment with actual sewage as influent wastewater was carried out to evaluate efficiency of SCPGS in real operation condition of full-scale sewage water treatment plant. At the time, T-N removal rate in this experiment and full-scale wastewater treatment plants were given by 43% and 20%, respectively. The above results indicate that SCPGS can be used as an advanced treatment process for economical efficiency considered.

  • A fluidized bed reactor containing porous media has been known to be effective for nitrogen and organic matters removal in wastewater. The porous media which attached microbes plays important roles in simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) due to coexistence of oxic, anaerobic and anoxic zone. For SND reaction, oxygen and organic substrates should be effectively diffused from wastewater into the intra-carrier zone. However, the overgrowth heterotrophic microbes at the surface of porous media may restrict from substrates diffusion. From these viewpoints, the existence and effect of heterotrophic bacteria at surface of porous media might be the key point for nitrogen removal. A porous media-membrane hybrid process was found to have improved nitrogen removal efficiency, due to stimulated denitrification as well as nitrification. Microelectrode studies revealed that although intra-media denitrification rate in a conventional fluidized bed was limited by organic carbon, this limitation was reduced in the hybrid process, resulting in the increased denitrification rate from 0.5 to $4.2\; mgNO_3-N/L/hr$.

  • Water pollution by ammonium ion and nitrate is a common and growing problem in the ecosystem. Process of biological removal consists of nitrification and denitrification by bacteria. Ammonium is oxidized generally to nitrate by nitrification and nitrate is reduced to dinitrogen gas in the subsequent denitrification process. Although natural zeolite is well known for its ability to preferentially remove ammonium, it is not sufficiently removing ammonium ion and nitrate by adsorption. In order to overcome this problem, a method of biological removal with zeolite is used for simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrate. As a result, in case of shaking culture with 1% seed and passing through zeolite column, the process revealed that ammonium ion could be removed completely after 14 hours. The removal of nitrate using columns with naturally adsorbed bacteria onto zeolite reached approximately 100% after 4 hours.

  • Feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic materials and nitrogen in the wastewater from fisheries processing plant was evaluated using entrapped mixed microbial cell (EMMC) process. The experiment was performed using activated sludge from municipal sewage treatment plant which was immobilized with gel matrix by cellulose triacetate. It was found the stable operation at the treatment system which is composed of anoxic and oxic tank, was possible when the organic and nitrogen loading rates were increased stepwise. The organic and nitrogen loading rates were conducted from 0.65 to $1.72kgCOD/m^3/d$ and from 0.119 to $0.317kg\;T-N/m^3/d$ with four steps, respectively. The maximum nitrogen loading rate which could satisfy the regulated effluent standard of nitrogen concentration, was $0.3kg\;T-N/m^3/d$. The removal efficiency of total nitrogen was decreased apparently as increasing nitrogen loading rates, whereas the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen was effective at the all tested nitrogen loading rates. Therefore, it was concluded that nitrification was efficient at the system. Nitrate was removed efficiently at the anoxic tank. whereas the nitrification efficiency at the oxic tank ranged 94.0% to 96.9% at the tested loading rates. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and those of total nitrogen at the entire system ranged from 94.2% to 96.6% and 73.4% to 83.4%, respectively.

  • This study was performed under four operational conditions for nitrogen removal in metal finishing wastewater. The conditions include electrode gap, reducing agent, the recycling of treated wastewater in 1st step and the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and other materials. Result showed that the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was highest at the electrode gap of 10 mm. As the electrode gap was shorter than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ decreased due to increasing in concentration polarization on electrode. And, in case that the electrode gap was longer than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased with an increase in energy consumption. Because hydrogen ions are consumed when nitrate is reduced, reducing reaction of nitrate was effected more in acid solution. As 1.2 excess amount of zinc was injected, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased due to increasing in amount of reaction with nitrate. As the effluent from 1st step in the reactor was recycled into the 1st step, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased. Because the zinc were detached from the cathode and concentration-polarization was decreased due to formation of turbulence in the reactor. The presence of $NH_4{^+}-N$ did not affect the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ but the addition of heavy metal decreased the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$. As chlorine is enough in wastewater, the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and ammonia nitrogen may be possible. The problem that heavy metal decrease the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ may be solved by increasing current density or using front step of electrochemical process for heavy metal removal.

  • The various of raw wastewater inflows to the industrial wastewater treatment plants everyday. This makes it difficult to operate the coagulation and flocculation efficiently as a pretreatment process for the industrial wastewater treatment. Additionally, it causes loads on evaporation and membrane facilities which are the posttreatment and alternative processes. For this reason, this study sampled raw wastewater before and after the NaOH injection. An experiment was conducted to compare the coagulation characteristics according to the methods of coagulant injection (single injection, simultaneous injection, consecutive injection, and inverse injection) aiming at efficient treatment of industrial wastewater. The coagulation experiment was conducted using a jar tester. The TDS removal efficiency by the coagulant injection methods increased in the order of consecutive injection (2.8 %) < single injection (3.9 %) < simultaneous injection(8.1 %) < inverse injection(9.6 %); the TOC removal efficiency grew in the order of single injection (84.3 %) < inverse injection (86.2 %) < consecutive injection (88.6 %) < simultaneous injection (89.1 %); the turbidity removal efficiency grew from single injection (99.7 %) < consecutive injection (99.8 %) ${\fallingdotseq}$ inverse injection (99.8 %) < simultaneous injection (99.9 %). These results show that the simultaneous inorganic coagulant-polymer coagulant injection method was more efficient than the consecutive injection method (inorganic coagulant ${\rightarrow}$ polymer coagulant).

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in two sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs). SBBR1 had a short first non-aeration period and SBBR2 had a long first non-aeration period. The removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in each SBBR were precisely observed according to the variation of influent TOC concentration, and the operation control parameters (pH, DO concentration, ORP) in each reactor were measured. In biological nitrogen removal, there was little difference between SBBR1 and SBBR2 and the nitrogen removal efficiencies were very low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics in high influent TOC concentration were different from those in low TOC. Nitrogen removals by simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) were occurred in both SBBR1 and SBBR2. The P removal in SBBR1 was superior to that in SBBR2. The second P release was observed in SBBR1 which had long second non-aeration period.

  • In order to removal turbidity at high turbidity, this study was carried to evaluate the coagulants(Alum, PACl, PACS) that was suited the characteristics of raw water in water treatment plants and to determinate the optimum method of lime feed. When the optimum coagulant was selected the organic matter removal was also investigated as $UV_{254}$. PACl, lime first feed had the highest turbidity removal efficiency rate as above 99.1% and then $UV_{254}$ removal rate was obtained over than 88.0%. If you had the necessary of the lime feed, among the method of lime feed time interval feed largely was improved than simultaneous feed. Also, lime feed dose had about 1/5 of coagulants dose in case of Alum and PACl, but always PACS should be considerated lime dose.

  • A study of the treatment of piggery wastes using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration was carried out at bench scale. From the physicochemical properties obtained from samples treated with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as Ag$^+$, Cu$^{2+}$, Na$^{-}$, K$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$, main inspections are subjected to isothem shape, pore distribution with micropore, SEM and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted to waste water to inwestigate the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. From these removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was derermined by the properties of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.
