  • Cosmology is a study to understand the origin, fundamental property, and evolution of the universe. Nowadays, many observational data of galaxies have become available, and one needs large-volume numerical simulations with good quality of the spatial distribution for a fair comparison with observation data. On the other hand, since galaxies' evolution is affected by both gravitational and baryonic effects, it is nontrivial to populate galaxies only by N-body simulations. However, full hydrodynamic simulations with large volume are computationally costly. Therefore, alternative galaxy assignment methods to N-body simulations are necessary for successful cosmological studies. In this talk, I would like to introduce the MBP-galaxy abundance matching. This novel galaxy assignment method agrees with the spatial distribution of observed galaxies between 0.1Mpc ~ 100Mpc scales. I also would like to introduce mock galaxy catalogs of the Horizon Run 4 and Multiverse simulations, large-volume cosmological N-body simulations done by the Korean community. Finally, I would like to introduce some recent works with those mock galaxies used to understand our universe better.

  • Many different engagement situations require naval ships to achieve some level of effectiveness. The performance of the naval ships is very important for such effectiveness. There have been many studies that analyze the effectiveness and the performance. The former are largely related to engagement level simulations, while the latter are largely related to engineering level simulations. However, there have been few studies that consider both the engagement level and the engineering level at the same time. Therefore, this study presents three case studies using engagement simulation of the engineering level to check the performance of the related parameters. First, detection performance simulations are carried out by changing the specifications of the passive sonars of a submarine in different scenarios. Maneuvering performance simulations are carried out by changing the specification of the hydroplanes of a submarine in different scenarios. Lastly, in order to check whether or not our forces would succeed in attacking enemy forces, we perform an engagement simulation with various naval ship models that consist of several engineering level models, such as command systems, weapon systems, detection systems, and maneuver systems. As a result, the performance according to the specifications of the naval ships and weapons is evaluated.

  • The need for drop simulations for board-leveled flip chips in micro-system packaging has been increasing. There have been many studies on flip chips with various solder ball compositions. However, studies on flip chips with Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu have rarely been attempted because of the unknown material properties. According to recent studies, drop simulations with these solder ball compositions have proven feasible. In this study, predictions of the impact lifetime by drop simulations are performed considering Cu and Cu/Ni UBMs using LS-DYNA to alter the design parameters of the flip chips, such as thickness of the flip chip and size of the solder ball. It was found that a smaller chip thickness, larger solder ball diameter, and using the Cu/Ni UBM can improve the drop lifetime of solder balls.

  • Astrophysics has been one of the disciplines which utilize actively supercomputers for their researches. In this paper, studies of astrophysical flows by large scale numerical simulations in supercomputers are discussed. The followings are described: 1) characteristics of astrophysical flows, 2) numerical codes to study astrophysical flows, 3) performance of the codes in parallel supercomputers. A couple of examples of such studies are briefly presented: 1) three-dimensional evolution of the nonlinear Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a magnetized medium, 2) three-dimensional simulations of astrophysical jets in a magnetized medium.

  • The performance functions of a suspension must provide often place conflicting demands upon rail bogie design since design parameters which may be altered to improve performance in one area may simultaneously reduce performance in another area. To determine compromised design parameters, it is need to carry out a number of simulations and trade-off studies. The suspension design system based on computer simulations is presented. The system is composed of analysis solvers and GUI which have functions such as modeling, analysis and sensitivity analysis.

  • For a flow normal to a circular disk, the flow separation occurs from the edge of the disk and the flow recirculation zone exists behind the disk. Many existing studies conducted simulations of flow normal to a circular disk under low Reynolds numbers. Some studies performed LES or DES simulations under high Reynolds numbers. However, comparative study for different RANS models for high Reynolds numbers is very limited. This study presents numerical simulations of a flow normal to a circular disk using Realizable k-ε model and SST k-ω model. The recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient were compared with the experimental data. The SST k-ω model showed the excellent predictions for the recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient.

  • Despite the fact that the deployment of sensor networks and target tracking could both be managed by taking full advantage of Voronoi diagrams, very little few have been made in this regard. In this paper, we designed an optimized barrier coverage and an energy-efficient clustering algorithm for forming Vonoroi-based Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN) in which we proposed a mobile target tracking scheme (CTT&MAV) that takes full advantage of Voronoi-diagram boundary to improve detectability. Simulations verified that CTT&MAV outperforms random walk, random waypoint, random direction and Gauss-Markov in terms of both the average hop distance that the mobile target moved before being detected and lower sensor death rate. Moreover, we demonstrate that our results are robust as realistic sensing models and also validate our observations through extensive simulations.

  • The suitability of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations on the built environment for the purpose of estimating average roughness characteristics and for studying wind flow patterns within the environment is assessed. Urban models of various levels of complexity are considered including an empty domain, array of obstacles arranged in regular and staggered manners, in-homogeneous roughness with multiple patches, a semi-idealized built environment, and finally a real built environment. For each of the test cases, we conducted CFD simulations using RANS turbulence closure and validated the results against appropriate methods: existing empirical formulas for the homogeneous roughness case, empirical wind speed models for the in-homogeneous roughness case, and wind tunnel tests for the semi-idealized built environment case. In general, results obtained from the CFD simulations show good agreement with the corresponding validation methods, thereby, giving further evidence to the suitability of CFD simulations for built environment studies consisting of wide-ranging roughness. This work also provides a comprehensive overview of roughness modeling in CFD-from the simplest approach of modeling roughness implicitly through wall functions to the most elaborate approach of modeling roughness explicitly for the sake of accurate wind flow simulations within the built environment.
