  • UTC(Unglazed Transpired Collector) system has recently emerged as a new solar air heating technology. It is relatively inexpensive because it has not a glazed material. And it demonstrates efficient particularly for the applications in which larger wall area facilities with a high outdoor air requirement. Mathematical algorithm for UTC thermal modeling has been understood for further improvement of the system. EES and TRNSYS model of actual solar wall panel could be developed for computer simulations under other conditions. Computer models could be validated with the measured data from fixed outdoor test cell in KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research). Major design parameters could be identified such as panel configuration and absorptivity and emissivity values for UTC design.

  • A massive cavity is generated behind the underwater vehicles, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. when a underwater vehicle moves at very high speed in the underwater. At this point it makes supercavitating flow and the nose, ie., the cavitator is very important fator at the vehicle since it should be surrounded by the cavity. The present work has focused on the simulation of cavitation flow using the new cavitator. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on homogeneous mixture model. For the code validation, the results from the present solver have been compared with experiments and other numerical results. A fairly good agreement with the experimental data and other numerical results have been obtained.

  • The paper presents a numerical simulation of flow of a turbulent boundary layer, representing a typical wind environment and matching a series of wind tunnel observations. The simulations are carried out at a Reynolds number of 20,000, based on the velocity U at a pseudo-height h, and large enough that the flow be effectively Reynolds number independent. Some wall models are proposed for the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) of the turbulent boundary layer over a rough surface. The Jenson number, $J=h/z_0$, based on the roughness length $z_0$, is 600 to match the wind tunnel data. The computational mesh is uniform with a spacing of h/32, as this aids rapid convergence of the multigrid solver, and the governing equations are discretised using second order finite differences within a parallel multiblock environment. The results presented include the comparison between wind tunnel measurements and LES computations of the turbulent boundary layer over rough surface.

  • In order to reduce the booming noise caused by first bending mode of a drive shaft, this paper proposes a simulation program for prediction of the bending mode frequency of any tubular shaft. This program consists of a pre-processor for modeling of geometrical shape of the drive shaft with boundary conditions of various joints, a processor for constructing of global finite element matrices using beam elements and an eigen-solver based on MATLAB program. Using this simulation program, the effective and accurate FE model far a shaft attached to vehicle can be obtained by aid of database for stiffness of each joint. Thus the resonance frequencies and mode shapes of a shaft can be calculated accurately. Because the effect of the resonance on interior noise can be verified, more improved shaft will be proposed at the early stage of design.

  • In this study, the numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the hydrodynamic evaluation between double plate steel rudder and newly designed foil type rudder for small fishing boat. The simulations are carried out in 2 speed ranges with 7 variations of flow's angle of attack which is at intervals of about 5 degree respectively. As the well-known commercial code, FLUENT and CATIA are used as the solver. The simulation results show that new designed foil type rudder is better than conventional double plate rudder in terms of Lift and Drag of running boat in the water.

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat wall in a confined plenum are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. A confined plenum was designed for simulating the missile launch and analyzing the behavior of the exhaust plume, which were accompanied by complex flow interactions with shock and boundary layer. Concerns of this paper are to show accurate simulation of internal flow in confined plenum and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a small opening on the side. Objectives of this numerical simulation are to understand the effect of changing the plume exit area of the plenum. Pressure and temperature rise at certain position in the plenum are traced and compared with test data.

  • In order to understand the flow and filtration characteristics in a wall-flow type DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), 0-D, 1-D, and 3-D simulations are preformed. In this paper, three model are explained and validated with each other. Based on the comparisons with 1-D and 3-D results for the steady state solution, 3-D CFD analysis is preferable to 1-D for the prediction of wall velocity at the inlet and exit plane. Because PM loading process is transient state phenomena, the combination of full 3-D and time dependent simulation is crucial for the configuration of wall channels. New coupling technique, which is the connection between calculated permeability from 0-D lumped parameter model and UDF(User Defined Functions) of main solver, is proposed for the realisti

  • The process and results of computer simulation using bond graphs for a hydraulic system driving large rotational inertia are presented in this paper. As the large rotational inertia and its application characteristics, control criteria of this system is not position-control nor velocity-control but appropriate acceleration, deceleration and inching ability. All the components' nonlinear characteristics are modelled using bond graphs. The equationing and solution process is carried out by a package. Finally it is concluded that modelling of this kind of system by bond graphs and using a software as its solver shows good approximated results to actual experimental data, and that the proposed modelling may be useful to actual design process for this kind of hydraulic system.

  • We present an immersed boundary (IB) method for 3D simulation of flappingflags in a uniform flow. The proposed formulation is manipulated on the basis of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A direct numerical method is developed to calculate the flag motion, with the elastic force treated implicitly. The fluid motion defined on an Eulerian grid and the flag motion defined on a Lagrangian grid are independently solved and the mass of flag is handled in a natural way. An additional momentum forcing is formulated from the flag motion equation in a way similar with the direct-forcing IB formulation and acts as the interaction force between the flag and ambient fluid. A series of numerical tests are performed and the present results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with previous studies. The instantaneous flag motion is analyzed under different conditions and surrounding vortical structures are identified. The effects of physical parameters on the flapping frequency are studied.
