Earthquake response of a core shroud for APR1400

  • The core shroud is one of the most important internal components of the reactor vessel internals because it meets the neutron fluence directly emitted by the nuclear fuel. In particular, dynamic effects for an earthquake should be evaluated with respect to the neutron irradiation flux. As a prerequisite to this study, simplified and detailed finite element models are developed for the core shroud using the ANSYS Design Parametric Language. Using the El Centro earthquake, seismic analyses are performed for the simplified and detailed core shroud models. Modal characteristics are obtained and their results are used for a time history analysis. Response spectrum analyses are also performed to access the degree of seismic excitation. The results of these analyses are compared to investigate the response characteristics between the simplified and detailed core shroud models from the time history and response spectrum analyses.

Simplified Seismic Response Analysis of a RC Bridge (철근콘크리트 교량의 단순화된 내진응답해석)

  • In this paper, simplified modeling approach describing the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete columns is discussed. The inelastic response of a reinforced concrete column or pier subjected to cyclic deformation reversals or earthquake ground motion is evaluated by use of lumped hysteretic representation. For this purpose, the hystertic model under axial force variation is developed and implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program. The analytical predictions obtained with the new formulation are compared with test results and reveal accuracy and applicability in terms of strength and stiffness. In addition, comparison between results with and without axial force variation stresses the importance of the proposed approach.

Simplified Analysis of Pile Bent Structures and Minimum Reinforcement Ratio (단일 현장타설말뚝의 간편해석 및 최소 철근비 분석)

  • In this study, simplified analysis (discrete analysis of column and pile) of pile bent structures was performed on the basis of the equivalent base spring model. And the minimum reinforcement ratio in pile bent structures was evaluated by taking into account various factors. To obtain the detailed information, simplified analysis was performed for column-pile interactions and the behavior of a column-pile was estimated and highlighted. Based on this study, it is shown that previous design method based on virtual fixed point theory cannot adequately predict the physical behavior of pile bent structures. It is found that the maximum bending moment is located within craking moment of the pile when material non-linearity is considered. It is also found that the minimum reinforcement ratio (=0.4%) is appropriately applicable for the optimal design of pile bent structure under ultimate lateral loading.

A Study on the Application of Simple Reliability Analysis for Soil Improvement (연약지반개량에 대한 신뢰성해석 간편법의 적용성 연구)

  • Recently, there is a trend to introduce a reliability approach to the design of al large scale improvement of weak ground due to the uncertainty of the influence factors in the consolidation. Since the reliability analysis is not easily adopted to geotechnical engineers because of some difficulties in working up the theories, Duncan(2000) proposed a simplified method for using reliability method to goetechnical problems. In this study, the applicability of Duncan's simplified reliability approach is evaluated by comparing the traditional reliability results with Duncan's. In the sensitivity analysis, the two results were quite similar. However, the probability of failure showed an error range of 20~50% and further Duncan's approach could not make a distinction for the distribution of geotechnical random variables. The simplified reliability method seems to be used properly in preliminary design if it is used supplementary with the deterministic method.

Simplified P-M interaction curve model for reinforced concrete columns exposed to standard fire

  • In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

Accuracy Analysis of Ionospheric Delay of Low Earth Orbit Satellites by using NeQuick G Model

  • Since the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal received from the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite is only affected by the upper ionosphere, the magnitude of the ionospheric delay of Global Positioning System (GPS) signal received from ground user is different. Therefore, the ground-based two-dimensional ionospheric model cannot be applied to LEO satellites. The NeQuick model used in Galileo provides the ionospheric delay according to the user's altitude, so it can be used in the ionospheric model of the LEO satellites. However, the NeQuick model is not suitable for space receivers because of the high computational cost. A simplified NeQuick model with reduced computing time was recently presented. In this study, the computing time of the NeQuick model and the simplified NeQuick model was analyzed based on the GPS Klobuchar model. The NeQuick and simplified NeQuick model were applied to the GNSS data from GRACE-B, Swarm-C, and GOCE satellites to analyze the performance of the ionospheric correction and positioning. The difference in computing time between the NeQuick and simplified NeQuick model was up to 90%, but the difference in ionospheric accuracy was not as large as within 4.5%.

Mechanical behavior and simplified models for the post-tensioned prestressed concrete lining

  • To investigate the mechanical behavior of the post-tensioned prestressed concrete lining (PPCL), the desilting tunnel of the Xiaolangdi Hydro Project in China is adopted as a case, and a detailed three-dimensional continuum model verified by the observation results is established for the PPCL. The radial stresses, longitudinal stresses, axial forces and bending moments of the PPCL under the completed cable tension condition (CCTC) and design water pressure condition (DWPC) are analyzed, respectively. The numerical results reveal that the PPCL concrete is significantly compressed in the circumferential direction by the prestress, while the prestress has a negligible influence on the radial stresses of the PPCL concrete. It should be noted that the concrete near the anchor slots has a complex and adverse stress state with stress concentration, longitudinal tensioning and large bending moment. In addition, a simplified shell model and a further simplified beam model which can take the influences of the prestress loss and the anchor slot into consideration are proposed for the PPCL. The results of the simplified models are in a good agreement with these of the three-dimensional continuum model, and they can be used as efficient approaches for the structural design and analysis of the PPCL.

FPSO Collision Analysis Using a Simplified Analytical Technique (간이 해석 기법을 이용한 FPSO 충돌 해석)

  • Collision between vessels may lead to structural damage and penetration of hulls. The structural damage of a hull may eventually bring about global collapse of the hull girder and outflow of oil, which would contaminate seawater. Therefore, various regulations require the strength of a vessel after collision to satisfy given criteria, and owners usually request collision analyses to confirm the structural safety of their vessels. In the process of designing a vessel to satisfy the collision strength criteria, the strength has been assessed mostly by conducting collision analyses using numerical techniques, such as dynamic, non-linear, finite-element analysis. Design is an inherently iterative process during which many changes are necessary due to the endless needs for reinforcement and modification. Numerical techniques are not adequate for coping with a situation in which collision analysis is frequently required to provide the revised results that reflect the repetitive changes in designs. Numerical techniques require a lot of time and money to conduct in spite of recent improvements in computing power and in the productivity of modeling tools. Therefore, in this paper, an analytical technique is introduced and a collision problem is idealized and simplified using reasonable assumptions based on appropriate background. The technique was applied to an example of an actual FPSO and verified by comparing the results with results from the numerical technique. A good correlation was apparent between the results of the analytical and numerical techniques.

Evaluation of seismic collapse capacity of regular RC frames using nonlinear static procedure

  • The Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) procedure is currently known as a robust tool for estimation of seismic collapse capacity. However, the procedure is time-consuming and requires significant computational efforts. Recently some simplified methods have been developed for rapid estimation of seismic collapse capacity using pushover analysis. However, a comparative review and assessment of these methods is necessary to point out their relative advantages and shortcomings, and to pave the way for their practical use. In this paper, four simplified pushover analysis-based methods are selected and applied on four regular RC intermediate moment-resisting frames with 3, 6, 9 and 12 stories. The accuracy and performance of the different simplified methods in estimating the median seismic collapse capacity are evaluated through comparisons with the results obtained from IDAs. The results show that reliable estimations of the summarized 50% fractile IDA curve are produced using SPO2IDA and MPA-based IDA methods; however, the accuracy of the results for 16% and 84% fractiles is relatively low. The method proposed by Shafei et al. appears to be the most simple and straightforward method which gives rise to good estimates of the median sidesway collapse capacity with minimum computational efforts.

Estimation of the Fatigue Damage for an Ice-going Vessel under Broken Ice Condition Part II - Simplified Approach (유빙 하중을 받는 내빙 선박의 피로손상도 추정 Part II - 간이 해석법)

  • In this study, a simplified analysis method was developed to evaluate the fatigue damage of an ice-going ship under broken ice condition. The global ice load, which is essentially calculated at the design stage of the Arctic vessel, and the hull form information were used to estimate the local ice load acting on the outer-shell of the ship. The local ice load was applied to the finite element analysis model, and the Weibull parameters for the target fatigue point were derived. Finally, fatigue damage was evaluated by applying the S-N curve and the Palmgren-Miner rule. For the verification of the proposed method, numerical analyses using direct approach were performed for the same conditions. A numerical model that implements the interaction between ice and structure was introduced to verify the local ice load and the stress calculated from the proposed method. Finally, the fatigue analyses of the Baltic Sea for actual ice conditions were performed, and the results of the proposed method, the method using numerical analysis, and the LR method were compared.
