Application of FE approach to deformation analysis of RC elements under direct tension

  • Heterogeneous structure and, particularly, low resistance to tension stresses leads to different mechanical properties of the concrete in different loading situations. To solve this problem, the tension zone of concrete elements is reinforced. Development of the cracks, however, becomes even more complicated in the presence of bar reinforcement. Direct tension test is the common layout for analyzing mechanical properties of reinforced concrete. This study investigates scatter of the test results related with arrangement of bar reinforcement. It employs results of six elements with square $60{\times}60mm$ cross-section reinforced with one or four 5 mm bars. Differently to the common research practice (limited to the average deformation response), this study presents recordings of numerous strain gauges, which allows to monitor/assess evolution of the deformations during the test. A simple procedure for variation assessment of elasticity modulus of the concrete is proposed. The variation analysis reveals different deformation behavior of the concrete in the prisms with different distribution of the reinforcement bars. Application of finite element approach to carefully collected experimental data has revealed the effects, which were neglected during the test results interpretation stage.

On the Prediction of Inner Pressure for the Tank in Rolling Motion (동요하는 탱크의 내부 변동압력 추정에 관한 연구)

  • The inner liquid pressure of an airtight tank in rolling motions is investigated by means of forced oscillation tests, and the simple method to estimate the inner liquid pressure is proposed. A rectangular solid tank, which is fully filled with water, was used in the forced oscillation test of rolling motion. The inner pressure variations in time were measured at several points on the inner walls of tank. Measured pressures are compared with the calculated ones, and estimation methods of the inner liquid pressure of the tank in rolling motion are studied based on the considerations of the origin of pressure.

A Hybrid Active Queue Management for Stability and Fast Adaptation

  • The domination of the Internet by TCP-based services has spawned many efforts to provide high network utilization with low loss and delay in a simple and scalable manner. Active queue management (AQM) algorithms attempt to achieve these goals by regulating queues at bottleneck links to provide useful feedback to TCP sources. While many AQM algorithms have been proposed, most suffer from instability, require careful configuration of nonintuitive control parameters, or are not practical because of slow response to dynamic traffic changes. In this paper, we propose a new AQM algorithm, hybrid random early detection (HRED), that combines the more effective elements of recent algorithms with a random early detection (RED) core. HRED maps instantaneous queue length to a drop probability, automatically adjusting the slope and intercept of the mapping function to account for changes in traffic load and to keep queue length within the desired operating range. We demonstrate that straightforward selection of HRED parameters results in stable operation under steady load and rapid adaptation to changes in load. Simulation and implementation tests confirm this stability, and indicate that overall performances of HRED are substantially better than those of earlier AQM algorithms. Finally, HRED control parameters provide several intuitive approaches to trading between required memory, queue stability, and response time.

  • A load motor used for warship or submarine is with limited volume and weight, also specific environmental tests like impact, vibration, noise, temperature and EMC/EMI have to be satisfied. Induction motors, synchronous motors, BLDC motor and etc, are used depending on the purpose of using military equipment. Induction Motors are used for a number of military equipment more commonly due to the robust structure and simple maintenance. Domestic and foreign warships have a wide range of voltages as the DC voltage sources with battery are mainly used for them. The ${\Delta}-connection$ operation of the induction motor is required to make the maximum power in a low voltage level. But the elements' temperature of the inverter increases due to high input current when it is in the ${\Delta}-connection$ operation. Therefore, the induction motor must be driven with the Y-connection. The lack of voltage needs to be with the field weakening control. This paper suggests the optimum field weakening control algorithm to drive the induction motor with maximum power in a limited thermal and DC voltage condition.

  • Prior to sea trials, dock trials are usually carried out in order to check the main propulsion system and auxiliaries. At that time the motion of a ship is limited by mooring ropes. In Hyundai Heavy Industries, a simple equation is used to obtain propeller thrust which is used as an input data of mooring analysis. Recently the ship size and the engine power become larger. Therefore a careful analysis of the mooring condition is necessary in order to avoid possible accidents. In this study propeller thrust at deck trials is reviewed and examined through a series of model tests.

Numerical Prediction of Temperature-Dependent Flow Stress on Fiber Metal Laminate using Artificial Neural Network (인공신경망을 사용한 섬유금속적층판의 온도에 따른 유동응력에 대한 수치해석적 예측)

  • The flow stresses have been identified prior to a numerical simulation for predicting a deformation of materials using the experimental or analytical analysis. Recently, the flow stress models considering the temperature effect have been developed to reduce the number of experiments. Artificial neural network can provide a simple procedure for solving a problem from the analytical models. The objective of this paper is the prediction of flow stress on the fiber metal laminate using the artificial neural network. First, the training data were obtained by conducting the uniaxial tensile tests at the various temperature conditions. After, the artificial neural network has been trained by Levenberg-Marquardt method. The numerical results of the trained model were compared with the analytical models predicted at the previous study. It is noted that the artificial neural network can predict flow stress effectively as compared with the previously-proposed analytical models.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Sliding Response of Unconstrained Objects to Base Excitations (바닥진동에 의한 비구속 물체의 거동파악 실험과 수치해석 전산프로그램의 개발)

  • Safety related devices unconstrained temporally in the process of operation of nuclear power plants could be damaged by the sliding during seismic activity. In this study sliding response of unconstrained objects to the base excitations is studied experimentally and analytically. In experiments static and dynamic tests to determine the coefficient of friction and the shaking table experiments to verify the sliding response of the analytic results were conducted. Numerical solutions by solving the nonlinear differential equations of motion governing sliding were found by the computer program using the step by step acceleration method. The exact solutions of the sliding response to the simple forms of base excitations were found to verify the computer program developed in this study. Relative displacement envelopes were suggested as a colliding criteria of the unconstrained objects.

Thermal transfer behavior in two types of W-shape ground heat exchangers installed in multilayer soils

  • This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the evaluation of a thermal response test using a precast high-strength concrete (PHC) energy pile and a closed vertical system with W-type ground heat exchangers (GHEs). Field thermal response tests (TRTs) were conducted on a PHC energy pile and on a general vertical GHE installed in a multiple layered soil ground. The equivalent ground thermal conductivity was determined by using the results from TRTs. A simple analytical solution is suggested in this research to derive an equivalent ground thermal conductivity of the multilayered soils for vertically buried GHEs. The PHC energy pile and general vertical system were numerically modeled using a three dimensional finite element method to compare the results with TRTs'. Borehole thermal resistance values were also obtained from the numerical results, and they were compared with various analytical solutions. Additionally, the effect of ground thermal conductivity on the borehole thermal resistance was analyzed.

  • This work is to observe combustion characteristics depending on variation of the solid propellent grain configuration. The LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) enables adjusting the thrust by controling the required fuel mass glow, but the SRM(Solid Rocket Motor)is not easy to adjust th thrust due to the difficulty of th fuel flow control by its combustion behavior even its configuration is simple. This difficulty can be partly solved by changing th size or the configuration of the propellant grain. In this study a proper grain configuration of a small solid rocket is selected through both the theoretical design and the experimental tests.

Soil Properties regarding Geological Conditions in Landslides area (산사태 발생지역에서의 지질조건별 토질특성)

  • A lot of landslides were occurred in Gangnung, Macheon and Geochang areas by Typhoons such as RUSA(2002) and MEAMI(2003). Soil properties of these areas are investigated regarding geological conditions in this study. The shallow plane failure were occurred in Gangnung and Geochang areas, whereas the deep circle failure were occurred in Macheon area. The matrix in Gangnung and Geochang areas was composed of Granite, and the matrix in Macheon area was composed of Gabbro. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled in these areas. As the results of laboratory tests using sampled soils, the coefficient of permeability in Granite region is lower than that in Gabbro region. In the cases that the silt and clay contents are included less than 4% for the soils of Granite region and less than 7% for the soils of Gabbro region, the coefficients of permeability are rapidly increased for both soils. In addition, the simple equations for predicting the coefficients of permeability are proposed using the effective particle size and the silt and clay contents according to geological condition.
