  • The static and dynamic hydrophobicities of the water droplets placed on a hydrophobic surface coated using a fluoroalkylsilanes monolayer with different molecular chain lengths were investigated through direct observation of the actual droplet motion during the sliding process. The surface roughness of both was found to be less than 1 nm. The static contact angles of the coated FAS-3 and FAS-17 were respectively $80^{\circ}$ and $108^{\circ}$ at $150^{\circ}C$, 1 h. The slope of sliding acceleration against the water droplet mass exhibited an inflection point, thus suggesting the switching of the dominant sliding mode from slipping to rolling. While their sliding angles were similar in value, notable differences were exhibited in terms of their sliding behavior. This can be understood as being due to the contribution of the shear stress difference at the interface between the solid surface and water during the sliding process. These results show that the sliding acceleration of the water droplets depends strongly on the balance between gravitational and retentive forces on the hydrophobic surface.

  • Since the discovery of high Tc superconductors, great efforts have been focused to develop high performance HTS magnets for the ultimate applications to power system devices. Magnet designers, however, have had difficulties in the estimation of the maximum operating current of the designed magnet from the tested short sample data, due to the degradation of the critical current density in the magnet. Similar story applies to the HTS electrical bus bar. It has been found that the critical current of Bi-2223 stacked tapes is much less than the total summation of critical currents of each tape, which is mainly attributed to the self magnetic fields. Furthermore, since the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tape is greater in the normal magnetic field (to the tape surface) than in the parallel one, detailed magnetic field configurations are required to reduce the self field effects. In this paper, we calculate the self field effects of a stacked conductor, defining self field factors of normal and parallel magnetic fields to the tape surface. Finally, the critical current degradations in the HTS magnet are explained by the introduced self field factors of the stacked conductor.

  • In order to evaluate physiological responses and comfort sensation of the developed thermoregulating textile material, polyester knit fabric was treated with phase change material (PCM) microcapsules by printing. Ten male subjects wearing an experimental best with and without PCMs were seated for 20 minutes, then exercised for 20 minutes, and then seated for 30 minutes in the chamber which was controlled under the temperatures of 20$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 50$\pm$5%R.H. The subject's skin temperature, microclimate inside garment and comfort sensation of two experimental bests were compared one another. As a result, the rectal temperature, skin temperature and mean skin temperature were similar in the two groups, and the subjects were not able to perceive the differences in comfort of the two experimental bests. However, the effect of PCM microcapsule could be seen from microclimate temperature and humidity. The microclimate temperature of the PCM garment at chest was significantly higher during exercise. The microclimate humidity of the PCM garment at chest was significantly lower during exercise and rest.

  • Ultrasonic transmitter used for scale prevention in boiler or heat exchanger is composed of the magnetostrictive material which transforms electric energy into ultrasonic wave and the horn which amplifies generated ultrasonic wave and transfers it into medium loaded. In this paper, we have performed the shape design for magnetostrictive material and analyzed a few type of horns which amplify generated ultrasonic wave and found each solution theoretically. Final length of the horn has been determined by measuring the sound pressure in medium between theoretical value and experience data. At last we have given the results of our study for the effects of ultrasonic wave irradiated by manufactured ultrasonic transmitter on preventing scale deposition on test pipe under the similar condition to boiler.

  • The spatio-temporal behaviors of Infra Red(IR) emission images of the sustain discharges were observed in AC PDP with various coplanar-gaps and auxiliary electrode. When the height of barrier rib was fixed, IR intensity of the sustain discharges in AC PDP did not increase with increase of coplanar-gap. The IR efficiency of sustain discharges showed the similar behavior with the IR intensity. The IR intensity had its maixmum value when the coplanar-gap was $200\;{\mu}m$ and the height of barrier rib was $150\;{\mu}m$. It was also found that the auxiliary electrode in the front plate enhanced IR emission during sustain discharge when the pulse was applied to the auxiliary electrode.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with the Ca/P ratios of 1.62, 1.67 and 1.72 were prepared and their dissolution behaviors in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were investigated. It appeared that surface dissolution of the ceramics was initiated from grain boundaries after 3 days of immersion in water. Following 10 days of immersion, microstructural disintergration of HA was severs for non-stoichiometric compounds, I.e Ca/P ratios of 1.62 and 1.72. Notably, a micron-sized circular cavity similar to lacunae, which can be generally formed in osteoclastic resorption process, was observed.

  • The mechanical properties and microstructures of aluminum-matrix composites fabricated by the dispersion of fine alumina particles less than $20{\mu}m$ in size into 6061 aluminum alloys are investigated in this study. In the as-quenched state, the yield stress of the composite is 40~85 MPa higher than that of the 6061 alloy. This difference is attributed to the high density of dislocations within the matrix introduced due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between the matrix and the reinforcement. The difference in the yield stress between the composite and the 6061 alloy decreases with the aging time and the age-hardening curves of both materials show a similar trend. At room temperature, the strain-hardening rate of the composite is higher than that of the 6061 alloy, most likely because the distribution of reinforcements enhances the dislocation density during deformation. Both the yield stress and the strain-hardening rate of the T6-treated composite decrease as the testing temperature increases, and the rate of decrease is faster in the composite than in the 6061 alloy. Under creep conditions, the stress exponents of the T6-treated composite vary from 8.3 at 473 K to 4.8 at 623 K. These exponents are larger than those of the 6061 matrix alloy.

  • This study analyzes and compares Hanji made with loess to Hanji made with kaolin, two yellow-based inorganic pigments, in terms of its physical properties, optical properties, and color fastness to light with the aim of using it as a fashion material. Hanji made by adding inorganic pigments showed an approximately 20% retention ratio on average. This figure was similar to those of loess and kaolin. Physical properties were analyzed, with the following results. A higher amount of additives lowered the apparent density and increased thickness and bulk. In general, inorganic pigment-added Hanji had lower tensile strength, bursting strength, and folding endurance compared to non-additive Hanji. The analysis of optical properties showed a lower brightness index for Hanji made with inorganic pigments compared to non-additive Hanji. When comparing the two inorganic pigments, the brightness of Hanji made with kaolin was higher. Regarding color fastness to light, loess showed level 4 and kaolin showed level 5 when 25% inorganic pigments on pulp were added to Hanji. Thus, Hanji made by adding inorganic pigments during the manufacturing process may perform well as materials for fashion because the additives enhanced both the color fastness to light and the bulk while maintaining the strength. In addition, Hanji dyed with inorganic pigments may have the potential to serve as materials for the fashion industry while still retaining the characteristics of Hanji.
