  • In this study, an Al82Ni7Co3Y8 (at%) bulk metallic glass is fabricated using gas-atomized Al82Ni7Co3Y8 metallic glass powder and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of powder size on the consolidation of bulk metallic glass is considered by dividing it into 5 ㎛ or less and 20-45 ㎛. The sintered Al82Ni7Co3Y8 bulk metallic glasses exhibit crystallization behavior and crystallization enthalpy similar to those of the Al82Ni7Co3Y8 powder with 5 ㎛ or less and it is confirmed that no crystallization occurred during the sintering process. From these results, we conclude that the Z-position-controlled spark plasma sintering process, using superplastic deformation by viscous flow in the supercooled liquid-phase region of amorphous powder, is an effective process for manufacturing bulk metallic glass.

  • Representative bulletproof materials, such as aramid or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE), have excellent strength and modulus in the plane direction but are very vulnerable to forces applied in the thickness direction. This paper reports a study on the effects of reinforcement in the thickness direction when bulletproof composite fabrics are prepared to improve their performance. Aramid and UHMWPE fabrics were combined using the film-bonding, needle-punching, or stitching methods and then subjected to low-velocity projectile and ball-drop impact tests. The results of the low-velocity projectile test indicated that the backface signature(BFS) decreased by up to 29.2% in fabrics obtained via the film-bonding method. However, the weight of the film-bonded fabric increased by approximately 23% compared with that obtained by simple lamination, and the fabric stiffened on account of the binder. Flexibility, light weight for wearability, and excellent bulletproof performance are very important factors in the development of bulletproof materials. When the needle-punching method was used, the BFS increased as the fibers sustained damage by the needle. When the composite fabrics were combined by stitching, no significant difference in weight and thickness was observed, and the BFS showed similar results. When a diagonal stitching pattern was employed, the BFS decreased as the stitching density increased. By contrast, when a diamond stitching pattern was used, the fabric fibers were damaged and the BFS increased as the stitching density increased.

  • In this study, we present a system for identifying equivalent grades of standardized wire rod steel based on alloy composition using machine learning techniques. The system comprises two models, one based on a supervised multi-class classification algorithm and the other based on unsupervised autoencoder algorithm. Our evaluation showed that the supervised model exhibited superior performance in terms of prediction stability and reliability of prediction results. This system provides a useful tool for non-experts seeking similar grades of steel based on alloy composition.

  • Numerous methods have been proposed in predicting formability of sheet metals based on microstructural and macro-scale properties of sheets. However, there are limited number of papers on the optimization problem to increase formability of sheet metals. In the present study, we aim to use novel optimization algorithms in neural networks to maximize the formability of sheet metals based on tensile curve and texture of aluminum sheet metals. In this regard, experimental and numerical evaluations of effects of texture and tensile properties are conducted. The texture effects evaluation is performed using Taylor homogenization method. The data obtained from these evaluations are gathered and utilized to train and validate an artificial neural network (ANN) with different optimization methods. Several optimization method including grey wolf algorithm (GWA), chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) are engaged in the optimization problems. The results demonstrated that in aluminum alloys the most preferable texture is cube texture for the most formable sheets. On the other hand, slight differences in the tensile behavior of the aluminum sheets in other similar conditions impose no significant decreases in the forming limit diagram under stretch loading conditions.

  • Two types of accelerated tests, Water Drop Test (WDT) and Temperature-Humidity-Bias Test (THBT), can be used to evaluate the susceptibility to electrochemical migration (ECM). In the WDT, liquid water is directly applied to a specimen, typically a patterned conductor like a printed circuit board. Time to failure in the WDT typically ranges from several seconds to several minutes. On the other hand, the THBT is conducted under elevated temperature and humidity conditions, allowing for assessment of design and life cycle factors on ECM. THBT is widely recognized as a more suitable method for reliability testing than WDT. In both test methods, localized corrosion can be observed on the anode. Composition of dendrites formed during the WDT is similar to that formed during THBT. However, there is a lack of correlation between the time to failure obtained from WDT and that obtained from THBT. In this study, we investigated the relationship between electrochemical parameters and time to failure obtained from both WDT and THBT. Differences in time to failure can be attributed to actual anode potential obtained in the two tests.

  • Insulation material absorption rate is closely related to thermal conductivity. In Korea, there is no study on the change of insulation material in a long-term continuous exposure environment. In this study, basic data on the long-term durability of insulation materials were obtained by measuring the absorption rate of insulation materials over time. For the purpose of providing, as a result of the measurement, PIR class2 No.2 and PIR noncombustible show similar absorption rate trends, which is thought to be due to the fact that both are made of rigid urethane foam, and flame retardant EPS has the highest absorption rate except for PF. This is thought to be because there is a space for absorption between the beads and the beads. In the case of XPS, it is thought that the reason for showing the lowest absorption rate is that because it is produced by extrusion, it has a high density and thus has less space for moisture to penetrate.

  • U-10wt.%Zr metallic fuel slugs containing rare-earth (RE: a rare-earth alloy comprising 53% Nd, 25% Ce, 16% Pr and 6% La) elements for a sodium-cooled fast reactor were fabricated by modified injection casting as an alternative method. The distribution, size and composition of the RE inclusions in the metallic fuel slugs were investigated according to the content of the RE inclusions. There were no observed casting defects, such as shrunk pipes, micro-shrinkage or hot tears formed during solidification, in the metallic fuel slugs fabricated by modified injection casting. Scanning electron micrographs and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) showed that the Zr and RE inclusions were uniformly distributed in the matrix and the composition of the RE inclusions was similar to that of a charged RE element. The content and the size of the RE inclusions increased slightly according to the charge content of the RE elements. RE inclusions in U-Zr alloys will have a positive effect on fuel performance due to their micro-size and high degree of distribution.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the possibility of using online corpora for teaching synonyms in Korean. The research included how to develop the effective concordance learning materials for teaching synonyms in Korean using data driven learning(DDL). Because synonyms are similar in meaning and usage, even native speaker can not clearly explain the difference in synonyms. Furthermore, it is not easy to provide proper example sentences for each word, and it is a reality that the differentiation of the synonyms are not sufficiently provided in the Korean textbooks. In recent years, it has been claimed that DDL helps students produce vocabulary as well as comprehend vocabulary. Nevertheless, it is hard to find how the concordance materials should be made for them. In this study, we extract concordance examples from the various kinds of online corpora; written and spoken corpora, korean textbooks, newspapers. We presented how to make corpus-designed activities using concordance materials for teaching Korean synonyms. In order to examine the effects of DDL, five experimental lessons were given to a group of 15 advanced korean learners in the university and follow-up surveys(attitude-questionnaire) were conducted. This study is meaningful in that it proposed a new teaching method in Korean synonym education.

  • Abalone shell is a high strength and light weighted ceramic composite material, which is composed of $CaCO_3$ platelet and protein. Microstructure of abalone shell has a matrix structure that is similar to the bricks and mortar. The technology inspired from nature which consumes low energy at low temperature is called bioinspired technology. In this study, to make high strength and light weighted ceramic composite materials using bioinspired technology, porous green body was prepared with $Al_2O_3$ platelet. PMMA was infiltrated into the porous green body, then warm pressed to eliminate pores present in the composite. The microstructure of the composite was observed with FESEM, and the mechanical/thermal properties were measured.

  • The corrosion resistance and cytotoxicity behavior of Ti alloys were studied as a function of Nb contents(3wt.%Nb, 20wt.%Nb, 40wt.%Nb). Ti-Nb alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace and then rolled to 50% reduction ratio after homogenized at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. The corrosion resistance of Ti-Nb alloys were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization test in the 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI solution. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows 1) The microstructure change from equiaxial to acicular and the increased $\beta$ phase in Ti-Nb alloys were obtained as the Nb content increased. 2) For the corrosion test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI, the corrosion behavior of Ti-Nb alloys was similar to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti. 3) For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti, 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.
