  • Microstructural observations on the pseudo-brookite $MgTi_2O_5$ and the similar type of $(In_{0.36}Zn_{1.09})Ti_2O_{5.64}$ were carried out using a top-entry HRTEM working at 200 kV. The modulated structures were found in $(In_{0.36}Zn_{1.09})Ti_2O_{5.64}$, however, not in $MgTi_2O_5$. The electron diffraction patterns of sublattice in $(In_{0.36}Zn_{1.09})Ti_2O_{5.64}$ are quite similar to those of pseudo-brookite $MgTi_2O_5$. but the complicated superlattice reflections are present in the diffraction patterns. Four types of modulations have been found. The periodicities for the modulated structure are found to be 3.63 nm, 0.79 nm and 0.64 nm along [220] direction, and 0.81 nm along [420] direction. The phase transition from the modulated structure to the unmodulated one was also observed in situ due to the electron beam irradiation reversibly. Further damage by the electron beam made the crystal to be fragmented into many small crystals with the formation of the voids at the kinks in ledged structure of the surface. The anisotropic arrangements of In and O atoms in $(In_{0.36}Zn_{1.09})Ti_2O_{5.64}$ might cause the compound to be unstable under the electron beam.

  • In this study, a liquid crystal emulsion with a composition ratio similar to the skin lipid composition was manufactured using ceramide, glycolipids, cholesterol, and fatty acids, and a polarized microscope was used to identify liquid crystal particles in the formulation, and a cryso-SEM was used to confirm the formation of a multilayer structure. The above samples were stored at room temperature for one month and the liquid crystal structure was continuously maintained through microscopic observation. In addition, a cream composition containing liquid crystal emulsion was manufactured, and the efficiency of ceramide skin penetration was confirmed using three-dimensional artificial skin. Clinical trials were conducted using the cream composition and the results of clinical trials on skin barrier improvement were confirmed by measuring skin moisture retention (skin hydration) and transepidermal water loss (T EWL) of subjects compared to general emulsion.

  • This study was undertaken to find out distribution and contamination sources of hazardous microbes through microbial hazard analysis on the processing steps of surimi-based imitation crab (SBIC). As a results of ananlysis of 9 hazardous microbes for 16 raw materials and 8 processing steps, no Samonella spp. and Escherichia coli were detected in all samples. Level and distribution of hazardous microbes in mixed color were similar to those of surimi. Changes of aerobic plate counts (APC), psychrotropic bacteria, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus showed similar trends at different processing steps. Thermotrophic bacteria and aerobic sporeformers were not detected until mixing step and feeding step, respectively and not reduced after cooking step. According to the comparison of APC at each step, it was suggested that surimi, workers and silent cutter at mixing step, and mixed color, workers and bundler at packaging step were the major contamination sources of bacteria.

  • Vibration characteristics of concrete slabs were investigated using a 1:10 scale model and finite element method. A 1:10 scale model of a test building with 150 and 200mm slab thicknesses was made of acrylic materials. Modal test was conducted to investigate mode shape and modal frequencies. Results show that the mode shapes of two slabs with different thickness are similar each other, whereas natural frequency is different. Through modal analysis using FEM, it was revealed that both mode shapes and natural frequencies calculated from the FEM model are similar to those of the scale model measurement. It was also found that natural frequencies increased with increment of the slab thickness.

  • For the development of multi-functional materials which has water reducing power, air entraining power and waterproofing power as well as blending additive in cement mortar the coal ash was modified with asphalt-stearic acid or asphalt-boiled oil mixtures by mechanical treatment. And the physical properties of cement mortar blended with modified coal ashes were compared with those of the water-tightness-cement mortar and the ordinary-portland-cement mortar added with AE.water reducing agent. The mortar of coalash-blend-cement modified with asphalt-stearic mixture was increased acid about 20% in initial strengths and decreased about 20% in water absorption ratio than those of ordinary coalash-blend-cement. The mortar of coalash-blend-cement modified with asphalt-bolied oil mixture was similar to the cement mortar added with AE.water reducing agent in water reduction ratio, air entraining conents and the initial strengths, also was similar to the water-tightness-cement mortar in water absorption and water permeability ratios.

  • A conductivity of soot at microwave frequency is presented using a novel technique for complex permittivity of materials. The method overcomes limitations of conventional methods which are cavity perturbation and transmission/reflection method. Resonant frequencies and Q factors are measured and simulated for the cylindrical cavity, and they are compared to each other. Similar material property of both real material and simulation material produce similar values of resonant frequency and Q factor. The complex permittivity of material can be determined by simulating the cavity to change material property until the simulation results are nearly the same as the measurement results. Cylindrical cavity has been realized for measurement at 880 MHz, and conductivity of soot is measured. A sample was made by depositing the soot on the glass. The proposed method shows that the conductivity of soot is 11 S/m.

  • We investigated the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of a highly soluble, fullerene-containing copolymer in both solution and film states. In solution state, the copolymer showed different PL characteristics depending on the aromaticity of the solvent. The PL from polystyrene segments of the copolymer was strongly quenched in an aromatic solvent, while the PL from fullerene remained unchanged. However, the films cast from an aromatic and a nonaromatic solvent demonstrated very similar PL characteristics, implying that the chain alignment or orientation and packing in the films occur in a similar way irrespective of the solvent.

  • The Plasma Arc Cutting Method using high density and hight temperature beam is well applicable to the cutting of the nonferrous metal (Al alloy ) and stainless steel which are unable to be cut by the use of the oxy-fuel gas. This study focalizes on the cutting phenomena of the plate of (mm) thickness, since the cutting phenomena of thick plates have been rather thoroughly studied. In this study the cutting groove, adhesive phenomena of dross, surface roughness were measured according to the variation of cutting speed and compared with the case of mild steel plates. The result showed that the kerf width variation of Al alloy was similar to the case of mild steel, while that of the stainless steel differed from the mild steel. In the adhesive phenomena of dross, 6(mm) thick plates of Al alloy showed a difference from those of thick plates, but the stainless steel was similar to thick plates. The surface roughness variation of Al alloy wias minimum at 67 cm/min, while that of stainless steel was at 30cm/min.
