  • The possibility of using a glass block with the composition of sodium borosilicate as starting materials for GRIN glass was examined from the view points of the phase separation of the matrix glass, the effects of leaching and the heating conditions for a porous structure, and the change in the refractive index. Glass specimens with similar compositions were prepared in the form of porous glass using a phase-separation technique. An examination of the heating and leaching conditions and the microstructure dependence of these conditions was made.; Specimens with porous structure were obtained when the heat treatment and leaching conditions were fixed at $540^{\circ}C$ for 30hrs and in a 0.3N$ H_2$$SO_4$ solution at $100^{\circ}C$, respectively. The resultant specimens had some important features on the GRIN glass.; the depth of the gradient and the change in refractive index (Δn) were 4mm and 0.015~0.02, respectively.

  • The intradermal injection of Propionibacterium acnes (ATCC 6919) into the ears of female Sprague-Dawley rats produced a chronic inflammation with the formation of acneiform lesions. Inflammation was characterized by more than four times of ear thickness and 2.8 times of ear weight at day 21. Histologically, massive infiltration of neutrophils, macrophage and lymphocytes, hyperplastic epidermis, comedones containing keratin mass and inflammatory materials were observed. Both ginseng saponin and extract from Korean red ginseng significantly redliced the ear thickness and their effects were similar to that of benzoyl peroxide. Ginseng samples and beneoyl peroxide modified lipid constituents of P. acnesinjected rat ear tissues. Even though no marked histological changes in inflammatory lesions were observed in ginseng-treated ear tissues, Korean red ginseng showed a possibility of reduce in the risk of acne development.

  • In this paper the attempts made by the authors to explore the feasibility of utilising concentrated solar beam radiation for joining engineering thermoplastics such as Acrylonitrilc/Butadiene/Styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate(PC) and Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) are presented. In addition, to study the joining of the materials, necessary experimentation with applying primer was performed. Tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength achieved at the specimen joint interface. Microscopic examinations of the fractured joints were performed in order to analyse the overall bond quality. Finally, the results in terms of bond strength achieved at the joint interface and energy consumed in the process were compared with those obtained with similar thermoplastic joining technique utilising microwave energy. In conclusion some advantages and limitations were outlined and necessary improvements of the jointing technique were recommended.

  • For the purpose of establishing laser welding condition (laser power, welding speed and beam focus) and of evaluating tailored blanks for two kinds of thin steel sheets SPCC and SK5M using in the thin plate structure such as automobile, train, and so on, investigated their $CO^2$ laser weldability under various initial welding conditions. SPCC thin sheet showed good weldability under some welding conditions. But, high carbon steel sheet SK5M needed heat treatment after welding to obtain ductility of the welded joint. And next, tailored blank was tested through deep drawing to evaluate reliability of their obtained laser welding conditions. The forming depths by tailored blank were SPCC+SPCC=22-25mm and SK5M+SK5M=13-25mm.

  • Hydrogen concentration depth profiles in homoepitaxial Si(001) films grown from hyper-thermal Si beams generated by ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) ion-beam sputtering have been measured by nuclear reaction analyses as a function of film growth temperature and deposition rate. Bulk H concentrations CH in the crystalline Si layers were found tio be below detection limits, 1${\times}$1019cm-3, with no indication of significant H surface segregation at the crystalline/amorphous interface region. This is quite different than the case for growth by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) where strong surface segregation was observed for similar deposition conditions with average CH values of 1${\times}$1020cm-3 in the amorphous overlayer. The markedly decreased H concentrations in the present experiments are due primarily to hydrogen desorption by incident hyperthermal Si atoms. Reduced H surface coverages during growth combined with collisionally-induced filling of interisland trenches and enhanced interlayer mass transport provide an increase in critical epitaxial thicknesses by up to an order of magnitude over previous MBE results.

  • In order to analyze the stretch forming characteristics of tailored blanks, laser welded blanks of different thickness and strength combinations were prepared and stretching tests were done. The stretching formability of laser welded blanks was reduced as increasing the deformation restraining force ($strength{\times}thickness$) ratio between two welded sheets. Weld line movement was attributed to strain concentration at weaker sheets and resulted in fracture at weaker sid, so that fracture could be predicted by the forming limit of the weak sheet. In the case of a welded blank with the similar deformation restraining force rations between two welded sheets, crack occurred at weld and its forming limit was about 15% less than the base sheet. The effects of lubrication and weld line position on stretch-ing formability were also investigated by experiments. Lower friction did not always give better formability for tailored blanks. Stretching formability was observed to be improved as increasing the area of weak sheet.

  • This study has been carried out to develop a CRT die using hot forging. The conventional CRT die made by casting has defects such as void and inclusion. These defects of the cast die make micro-spots on the surface of the CRT which affect the quality of the final product. So, a hot forging process is developed to avoid these defects of CRT die by the model material test and the rigid-plastic FEM. Firstly, model material tests are carried out with plasticine billets in order to investigate the material flow pattern in the die cavity and to get the reasonable initial values for designing the preform in the FE simulation. And then a finite element analysis has been performed to Predict the preform and the forging load of a CRT die. We also suggest an integrated die-set which combines two die-sets into one die-set to save manufacturing time and cost in case of similar die-size.

  • Antithamnion miharae (Tokida) Itono was investigated in field and laboratory culture. The plant grows in lower littoral zone through out the year in Korea. The gland cells occur scarcely or commonly according to the populations, but the terminal hairs in the female plants are not observed. The structure of vegetative thallus and the reproductive organs in culture are similar to those of field materials, except for the number of gonimoblasts, which become five to six in contrast to one to three of the field. A typical Polysiphonia-type life history is repeated in culture. This species which produces tetrahedral tetrasporangia is markedly distinguished from Antithamnion glandulifera sensu Kylin (=Antithamnionella glandulifera (Kylin) Wollaston) which produces cruciate tetrasporangia, while the plants reported by Dawson (1962) and Wollaston (1971) as A. glandulifera seem to be conspecific with A. miharae by the fact that they have the tetrahedral tetrasporangia in stead of cruciate ones.

  • Bowlesia incana Ruiz & Pav., a new invasive alien plant in Korea, was found in Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City. This species is characterized as being similar to the genera Hydrocotyle Tourn. ex L. and Centella L. However, it differs morphologically from these two genera in leaves, flowers, and fruits, as well as stellate pubescence growing on the whole plant. In Korea, Bowlesia incana Ruiz & Pav. is recorded for the first time in this study. A morphological description, distribution map, and illustrations based on the Korean materials collected are presented.

  • Dense oxygen ionic conducting materials can be used for oxygen separation membranes at high temperatures. However, they show relatively low permeation flux because of their large resistances. To reduce resistances and improve the oxygen permeation flux, thin dense yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ)/Pd composite dual-phase membranes were fabricated by a new approach that combines the reservoir method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). A thin porous YSZ layer was coated on a porous alumina support by dip-coating the YSZ suspension. A continuous Pd phase was formed inside pores of the YSZ layer by the reservoir method. The residual pores of the YSZ/Pd layer were plugged with yttria/zirconia by CVD to ensure the gas tightness of the membranes. The oxygen permeation fluxes through these composite membrane were 2.0$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s and 4.8$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s at 105$0^{\circ}C$ when air and oxygen were used as the permeate gases, respectively. These oxygen permeation values are about 1 order of magnitude higher than those of pure YSZ membranes prepared under similar conditions.
