  • A geoscientific research was performed on 12 samples of comb-pattern potteries which were excavated at Daecheonri neolithic site, Korea. The texture and compositions of 12 potteries and surrounding metrix of soil and rocks were compared with the help of petrographic microscope, XRD and REE data. As to the manufacturing techniques thick potteries are caused by the amount and number of coarse grains which are assumed to be added shards when their distributional pattern are considered. DC1, DC3, DC 7 and DC11 samples have clearly oriented textures, and the orientation of vesicles in DC3 and DC11 samples arranged in the same direction with those on the pottery surface. This indicates the use potter's wheel technique in manufacturing potteries. Burning temperature is assumed over $800^{/circ}C$, particularly under reduction environment. As to the source, raw materials of pottery matrix are derived from the bottom of excavation site, or in an extracted outcrop of the northwestern foothill from site, while the shard materials are very similar with those extracted from sandy loams near sites. Finally any use pattern of pottery may control the pottery thickness, shard addition, and matrix selection.

  • This study synthesized poly-urea and used it as a filler material for the restoration of porcelain. The synthesized poly-urea was manufactured as a resin and hardener mix that does not undergo contraction during curing, and is unfading. Given an adhesion strength of $180kg/cm^2$ and shearing strength of $200kg/cm^2$, the synthesized poly-urea exhibited the same efficacy as the epoxy putty currently sold in the market. Moreover, it also overcame the drawback of foaming encountered by urethane restoratives, which are a structurally similar type. The hardening time and pot life could also be controlled using additives. The poly-urea used for the restoration of modern artifacts presented a pot life of approximately one hour and took 12 h for complete hardening ($T_{90}$). When a $2{\times}2{\times}2cm$-sized test sample was added to xylene, poly-urea started to separate approximately two hours later and completed perfect pulverization within the solution 24 h later, demonstrating its reversibility. When directly applied to contemporary artifacts, it demonstrated the potential for restoration, as well as convenience and colorfulness.

  • This study was carried out to diminish the formation of scale in boilers which is one of the defect elements when they are operating. The defect relating to scale can cause a fatal impact on the explosion of boilers due to the overheating of their tubes, or it can affect the flow of water inside boilers with its bad circulation and result in a disparity of water inside the equipment. Heat transfer in the scale is low comparing to the boiler material, so it can lead to energy losses and has also impact on the global warming. In 2005, the Korean government introduced a system which requires boiler users to install the equipment which can prevent or eliminate the formation of scale to improve the management of water quality in boilers. The study on the techniques for preventing or eliminating the formation of scale started in 1821 and since then subsequently there have been lots of similar studies. The first one was about the scale reduction using potato starch. Since an ultrasonic scale preventer developed by a scientist from a Russian acoustic institute was introduced in1993, a variety of equipment of this kind have been disseminated in Korea. There has been a need to demonstrate the condition for the best performances of such equipment. Boilers are mostly composed of the main body and 288 the tube with a circular curved surface. I carried out a demonstration study on a circular tube which affects the scale defect the most among the boiler components. As a result of it, I found out the fact that the ultrasonic wave needs to reach a certain level of sound pressure and frequency to affect the formation of scale.

  • MET (Microbial Electrochemical Technology), such as MFC (Microbial Fuel Cell) and MEC (Microbial Electrolysis Cell), is a promising technology for producing sustainable biogas from an anaerobic digester (AD). At current stage, however, the most likely limiting factors, large internal resistances, should be overcome for successful scale up of this technology. Various researchers reported that application of electrode materials containing high current density, increase of ion strength and conductivity, configuration of electrode are good methods for minimizing internal resistances. Recently, stainless steel is receiving great attention because of not only high performance and durability but also low cost. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate electrochemical characteristics and biogas production rate using various electrode materials and configuration (graphite carbon coated with catalysts ($GC-C_M$) or not (GC), stainless steel mesh (SUS-M) and plate (SUS-P)). As the results, current densities of $GC-C_M$, GC, SUS-P, SUS-M were 2.03, 1.36, 1.04, $1.13A/m^2$, respectively. Methane yields of $GC-C_M$, GC, SUS-P, SUS-M were 0.27, 0.14, 0.19, 0.21 $L-CH_4/g-COD_{rem}$., respectively. Stainless steel shows high current density and methane yield, which are similar as graphite carbon coated with catalysts.

  • Even though to discard the waste FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) is urgent and problematic, the way to do it has not been efficient. In our project team the FRP have been splitted into some layers which have different physical properties; mat and roving layers. Among those, the roving layer woven like a basket by bundles of glass fibers has been cut into reusable fibers called 'F-fiber'. F-fiber is 1 mm or 3 mm in width and 3 cm in length. It is used in fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) with 0.5%, 0.7%, 1.0%, or 1.5% of volume ratio. Produced FRC was tested in compressive, tensile, and bending stress in contrast to the without-fiber (standard) concrete and 0.1% polypropylene reinforced concrete (PP-FRC). The tensile and bending stresses are more or less those of PP-FRC. The compressive stress, however, is similar (with 3 mm F-fiber) to or lower (with 1 mm F-fiber) than that of standard concrete. Conclusively the usage of the waste FRC in concrete is advised to be limited to the one where the compressive stress is not much critical.

  • The seismic performance of a containment structure should be secured to maintain the structural soundness of a containment structure under various earthquakes that occur globally. Therefore, an analysis of the seismic performance of a modular containment structure for a small modular reactor is also required. To analyze the seismic performance of modular containment, FEM models with contact surfaces between the modules and tendon were prepared and the modal and seismic analyses were performed. The displacement, stress, and gap size of modular containment under earthquake wave were analyzed. The effects of the tendon force, friction coefficient, and earthquake wave on the seismic performance were analyzed. The seismic performance of monolithic containment was also analyzed for comparison. In the 1st and 2nd natural modes, which most likely affect, the modular containment showed horizontal dynamic behavior, which is similar to monolithic containment, because of the combined effects of the tendon force and friction force between modules. When the combined effect is sufficient, the seismic performance of the modular containment is secured over a certain level. An additional increase in seismic performance is expected when some material with a larger friction coefficient is adopted on the contact surface.

  • Background: Adequate exposure of the mitral valve is a prerequisite for mitral procedures including the repair. An extended transseptal approach in mitral valvular operations is known to have certain technical advantages in recent years because of the anatomic posterior location of the mitral valve, especially in reoperations and in the presence of the small atrium in spite of the possibility of arrhythmia due to injury of sinus nodal artery. Material and Method: We compared the preoperative status, operative, and postoperative factors among patients in two study groups, transseptal only (Group I, n=10) and extended transseptal approach(Group II, n=25). Result: There were no differences in age, sex, NYHA functional class, left atrial size, and left ventricular function. The incidence of the redo-operation was high and early postoperative arrhythmia, which was improved later, appeared in 3 patients in Group II, but not in Group I. Conclusion: We believe that atrial septal incision could be extended up to the atrial roof whenever exposure of the mitral valve during a transseptal approach is inadequate because the late results were similar.

  • ZnO is a promising material for the application of high efficiency light emitting diodes with short wavelength region for its large bandgap energy of 3.37 eV which is similar to GaN (3.39 eV) at room temperature. The large exciton binding energy of 60 meV in ZnO provide provides higher efficiency of emission for optoelectronic device applications. Several ZnO/ZnMgO multiple quantum well (MQW) structures have been grown on various substrates such as sapphire, GaN, Si, and so on. However, the achievement of high quality ZnO/ZnMgO MQW structures has been somehow limited by the use of lattice-mismatched substrates. Therefore, we propose the optical properties of ZnO/ZnMgO multiple quantum well (MQW) structures with different well widths grown on lattice-matched ZnO substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show MQW emissions at 3.387 and 3.369 eV for the ZnO/ZnMgO MQW samples with well widths of 2 and 5 nm, respectively, due to the quantum confinement effect. Time-resolved PL results show an efficient photo-generated carrier transfer from the barrier to the MQWs, which leads to an increased intensity ratio of the well to barrier emissions for the ZnO/ZnMgO MQW sample with the wider width. From the power-dependent PL spectra, we observed no PL peak shift of MQW emission in both samples, indicating a negligible built-in electric field effect in the ZnO/$Zn_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}O$ MQWs grown on lattice-matched ZnO substrates.

  • This is the analysis of material dyed with Korean yellow dyes such as tumeric, amur cork tree, goldthread, gardenia, and the flowers of sophora japonica using nondestructive ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectrophotometry. In order to find out whether type of fabric or mordant influences analysis results, test fabrics were made using two types of fabric(silk and cotton) and dyed using three different mordants(no mordant, alum, iron). After analysis with UV-Vis reflectance spectrum on the dyed fabric, when the fabric was dyed with tumeric, amur cork tree and goldthread, the results were similar with no mordant and alum mordant, whereas there was a difference with an iron mordant. Also when the fabric was dyed using gardenia, different fabrics brought different results but there was no difference in results with mordants. On the other hand, when the fabric was dyed using the flowers of sophora japonica, there was no difference with fabrics but with mordants. After analysis with 3D-fluorescence spectrum, fabrics dyed with tumeric, amur cork tree and goldthread showed their own fluorescent spectrum with no regard to fabric and mordant; but with gardenia, there were differences with different fabrics whereas with the flowers of sophora japonica, there were differences with mordants.
