  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of Mineral trioxide aggregate(MTA) to support osteoclastic differentiation from fetal rat calvarial cell. Methods: In this study, response of IL-6, RANKL, and OPG in fetal rat calvarial cells stimulated with IL-$1{\beta}$ on MTA was evaluated by ELISA and RT-PCR. Results: The results were as follows; there was no significant difference between glass and MTA at 5days. In ELISA analysis, Glass group and MTA group showed similar IL-6 expression, Glass+IL-$1{\beta}$ group and MTA+IL-$1{\beta}$ group showed similar IL-6 expression. In RT-PCR analysis, Glass group and MTA group showed similar IL-6, RANKL, OPG mRNA expression, MTA+IL-$1{\beta}$ group and Glass+IL-$1{\beta}$ group showed 3 fold increase of IL-6 and RNAKL mRNA expression when compared with MTA group. All groups showed similar OPG mRNA expression. Conclusions: MTA does not suppress cell proliferation and increase the proinflammatory cytokine that induce osteoclastogenesis. Thus, MTA is biocompatible material that could be used in various clinical conditions.

  • This study aims to examine the material characteristics of bowls and compare the making techniques of flat cup with cover and jar coffin from the Oryang-dong kiln site, Naju. Bowls, the most frequently excavated small pottery have similar material characteristics, including gray surface, fine-grained texture, and small-sized tempers such as quartz and feldspar, regardless of the excavation slopes. However, the firing temperature of the bowls mostly ranges from 950 to 1,100 ℃. It is estimated that the bowls had formalized making techniques, owing to the similar material composition and firing technique regardless of the excavation slope. The flat cups with cover have similar texture and mineral phases, except their poorly sorted inclusions. However, the jar coffins contain not only fine-grained minerals but also medium-grained quartz, feldspar, and biotite, showing a relatively wide range of firing temperatures. According to the geochemical results of pottery by type, it is assumed that chemical compositions are classified into two groups: small pottery(bowl and falt cup with cover) and jar coffins. In conclusion, small potteries such as bowls and flat cups with cover were made by removing the heavy minerals from raw materials, whereas jar coffins were made by adding medium-grained minerals to raw materials to maintain and support their structures, despite the same source materials. In addition, it is presumed that pottery making proceeded by selecting the source materials, preparing according to their use and controlling the firing temperature and environment.

  • In this study, we investigate the mechanical properties of high manganese steel, and the friction and wear characteristics of brake friction material containing this steel, for passenger car application, with the aim of replacing copper and copper alloys whose usage is expected to be restricted in the future. These steels are prepared using a vacuum induction melting furnace to produce binary and ternary alloys. The hardness and tensile strength of the high manganese steel decrease and the elongation increases with increase in manganese content. This material exhibits high values of hardness, tensile strength, and elongation; these properties are similar to those of 7-3 brass used in conventional friction materials. We fabricate high manganese steel fibers to prepare test pad specimens, and evaluate the friction and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The brake pad material is found to have excellent friction stability in comparison with conventional friction materials that use 7-3 brass fibers; particularly, the friction stability at high temperature is significantly improved. Additionally, we evaluate the wear using a wear test method that simulates the braking conditions in Europe. It is found that the amount of wear of the brake pad is the same as that in the case of the conventional friction material, and that the amount of wear of the cast iron disc is reduced by approximately 10. The high manganese steel is expected to be useful in the development of eco-friendly, copper-free friction material.

  • PURPOSE. Finite element study on the effect of abutment length and material on implant bone interface against dynamic loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two dimensional finite element models of cylinderical implant, abutments and bone made by titanium or polyoxymethylene were simulated with the aid of Marc/Mentat software. Each model represented bone, implant and titanium or polyoxymethylene abutment. Model 1: Implant with 3 mm titanium abutment, Model 2: Implant with 2 mm polyoxymethylene resilient material abutment, Model 3: Implant with 3 mm polyoxymethylene resilient material abutment and Model 4: Implant with 4 mm polyoxymethylene resilient material abutment. A vertical load of 11 N was applied with a frequency of 2 cycles/sec. The stress distribution pattern and displacement at the junction of cortical bone and implant was recorded. RESULTS. When Model 2, 3 and 4 are compared with Model 1, they showed narrowing of stress distribution pattern in the cortical bone as the height of the polyoxymethylene resilient material abutment increases. Model 2, 3 and 4 showed slightly less but similar displacement when compared to Model 1. CONCLUSION. Within the limitation of this study, we conclude that introduction of different height resilient material abutment with different heights i.e. 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm polyoxymethylene, does not bring about significant change in stress distribution pattern and displacement as compared to 3 mm Ti abutment. Clinically, with the application of resilient material abutment there is no significant change in stress distribution around implant-bone interface.

  • This investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al hybrid material prepared by electromagnetic duo-casting to determine the effect of heat treatment. The hybrid material is composed of an Al-Mg-Si alloy, pure Al and the interface between the Al-Mg-Si alloy and pure Al. It is heat-treated at 373, 573 and 773K for 1h and T6 treated (solution treatment at 773K for 1h and aging at 433K for 5h). As the temperature increases, the grain size of the Al-Mg-Si alloy in the hybrid material increases. The grain size of the T6 treated Al-Mg-Si alloy is similar to that of one heat-treated at 773K for 1h. The interface region where the micro-hardness becomes large from the pure Al to the Al-Mg-Si alloy widens with an increasing heat temperature. The hybrid material with a macro-interface parallel to the tensile direction experiences increased tensile strength, 0.2 % proof stress and the decreased elongation after T6 heat treatment. On the other hand, in the vertical direction to the tensile direction, there is no great difference with heat treatment. The bending strength of the hybrid material with a long macro-interface to the bending direction is higher than that with a short macro-interface, which is improved by heat treatment. The hybrid material with a long macro-interface to the bending direction is fractured by cracking through the eutectic structure in the Al-Mg-Si alloy. However, in the hybrid material with a short macro-interface, the bending deformation is observed only in the limited pure Al.

  • In case of favourable irradiation conditions, the ratio of irradiation to the total irradiation went up and then the irradiation increased in the area with high angle of inclination. The study showed that on a clear day with the irradiation of more than $800[W/m^2]$, the pattern of alternating current power change in the fixed system was similar with that in the single-axis tracker. On the contrary, in case of unfavourable irradiation conditions, the ratio of diffuse irradiation to the total irradiation went up and then the horizontal irradiation increased. In the demo system, the fixed system, the single-axis tracker and the dual-axis tracker all had low generation power and similar generation pattern with each other. The study showed the generation power varied with the irradiation in the fixed system, while in the single-axis tracker and the dual-axis tracker, the amount of the generation power variation was much more than the irradiation variation. The demo system was operated from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM for generating power, during which time, 46[%] to 56[%] of the total generation power was produced. In this study. the generation power was increased by 147[%] in the fixed system, by 136[%] in the single-axis tracker, and by 164[%] in the dual-axis tracker, and the pattern of generation power was similar with the generation power variation in the situation where the irradiation increased by 140[%] in the spring with plenty of insolation. The alternating current power was more sensitive to variation of the irradiation than to that of the surface temperature of a module. The variation of the irradiation had a more positive effect on the generation power than the type of array.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the resistance to deformation under static overloading by measuring yield and fracture strength, and to analyze the failure characteristics of implant assemblies made of different titanium grades and connections. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six groups of implant assemblies were fabricated according to ISO 14801 (n=10). These consisted of the combinations of 3 platform connections (external, internal, and morse tapered) and 2 materials (titanium grade 2 and titanium grade 4). Yield strength and fracture strength were evaluated with a computer-controlled Universal Testing Machine, and failed implant assemblies were classified and analyzed by optical microscopy. The data were analyzed using the One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student's t-test with the level of significance at P=.05. RESULTS. The group $IT4_S$ had the significantly highest values and group IT2 the lowest, for both yield strength and fracture strength. Groups $IT4_N$ and ET4 had similar yield and fracture strengths despite having different connection designs. Group MT2 and group IT2 had significant differences in yield and fracture strength although they were made by the same material as titanium grade 2. The implant system of the similar fixture-abutment interfaces and the same materials showed the similar characteristics of deformation. CONCLUSION. A longer internal connection and titanium grade 4 of the implant system is advantageous for static overloading condition. However, it is not only the connection design that affects the stability. The strength of the titanium grade as material is also important since it affects the implant stability. When using the implant system made of titanium grade 2, a larger diameter fixture should be selected in order to provide enough strength to withstand overloading.

  • The prohibitively high cost of Pt catalyst might be the biggest barrier for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) of which wide application is expected. Worldwide research efforts for the development of alternative to Pt oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst are made recently. One of the important considerations in the catalyst development is durability issue as well as economic aspect. From this point of view, platinum group metals (PGM) except Pt can be a candidate for replacing Pt catalyst because the material properties and the catalytic activity of PGM are expected to be similar to Pt. In contrast to Ir, Rh and Os to which not so much attention has been paid as an ORR catalyst, Pd that is most similar to Pt in terms of material properties and catalytic activity and Ru that is in the form of chalcogenide have been studied intensively. Activity comparison between non-Pt and Pt oxygen reduction catalysts by half cell test using RDE (rotating disk electrode) or PEMFC MEA (membrane electrode assembly) operation indicates that Pd-based catalysts show the most similar activity to Pt. In this paper we analyze the composition of PGM ORR catalyst in literature to promote the development of non-Pt ORR catalyst.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the biomechanical properties of the dental implants on the supporting bone using three-dimensional finite element method when three different abutment materials were applied to the implant system. Methods: Three different dental implant models were fabricated by applying Ti, PEEK, and CRE-PEEK (60% carbon-reinforced PEEK) to abutment material. The abutment and connecting screw from the fixture was applied with a tightening torque of 20 Ncm. And then, total loads of 150 N were applied in an $30^{\circ}oblique$ direction (to the vertical). The structural stability of dental implants on the supporting bone was analyzed using Von Mises stress and principal stress values. Results: The maximum tensile stress of the cortical bone was highest at 12.6 MPa in the PEEK abutment (Model-B). Ti abutment (Model-A) and CRE-PEEK abutment (Model-C) showed similar stress distributions (10.6 and 10.3 MPa, respectively). And the maximum compressive principal stress was similar in all models. The Von Mises stress value delivered to the bone around the implant was highest at 16.5 MPa in Model-B. On the other hand, Model-A and C showed similar stress distributions (14.0 and 13.8 MPa, respectively). In addition, the maximum equivalent stress applied to the abutment was highest at 629.8 MPa in Model-A. The stress distribution in Model-C was 573.9 MPa. Whereas, Model-B showed the lowest value at 165.6 MPa. Conclusion : The dental implant supporting bone system using PEEK material seems to have the possibility of supporting bone fracture. It was found that the CRE-PEEK abutment can reduce the elastic deformation and reduce the stress value of the interfacial bone.

  • This study was aimed to analyze the stress distribution of implant and supporting tissue in single tooth implant restoration using Branemark $system^{(R)}$(Nobel Biocare, Gothenberg, Sweden) and Bicon system(Bicon Dental Implants, Boston, MA). Two dimensional finite element analysis model was made at mandibular first premolar area As a crown materials porcelain, ceromer, ADA type III gold alloy were used. Tests have been performed at 25Kgf vertical load on central fossa of crown portion and at 10Kgf load with $45^{\circ}$ lateral direction on cusp inclination. The displacement and stresses of implant and supporting structures were analyzed to investigate the influence of the crown material and the type of implant systems by finite element analysis. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The type of crown material influenced the stress distribution of superstructure, but did not influence that of the supporting alveolar bone. 2. The stress distribution of ceromer and type III gold alloy and porcelain is similar. 3. Stress under lateral load was about twice higher than that of vertical load in all occlusal restorative materials. 4. In Bicon system, stress concentration is similar in supporting bone area but CerOne system generated about 1.5times eater stress more in superstructure material. 5. In Branemark models, if severe occlusal overload is loaded in superstvucture. gold screw or abutment will be fractured or loosened to buffer the occlusal overload but in Bicon models such buffering effect is not expected, so in Bicon model, load can be concentrated in alveolar bone area.
