  • This study focuses on having a temperature and water pressure effects on the change of material properties of rocks. Granite and limestone specimens from Gagok Mine were thermally treated with predetermined temperatures of 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ (excepting $700^{\circ}C$ for limestone) to estimate the reduction of material properties of rocks caused by heat. Specific gravity, effective porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for pre-heated specimens were measured. With increasing temperature, material properties of both rock specimens change sequentially. Significant changes of specific gravity, effective porosity and elastic wave porosity occur above $400^{\circ}C$ for granite and $300^{\circ}C$ for limestone. Changes of uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio seem to be similar to those of physical properties. GSI of 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ specimens inferred by using uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of preheated granite specimens is found to be 81, 66 and 58 each. In case of pre-heated limestone specimens of 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$, the corresponding GSI is 76, 71 and 65 each. 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ granite specimens and 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ limestone specimens were pressurized to 7.5 MPa and their effective porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus were measured. The average value of material properties (mentioned above) of 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ granite specimens under water pressure compared with material properties of non-pressurized pre-heated specimens exhibits the reduction of 7.6, 11.3 and 14.9%, respectively. In case of 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ limestone specimens under water pressure, the average value of material properties decreases by 8.2, 13.8 and 21.9%, respectively.

  • A rubber diaphragm is a critical element of accumulators. The material of a diaphragm is nitrile rubber so as to recover and adjust the large deformation under external pressure fluctuation. The performance of accumulators is influenced by the deformation behaviors of the diaphragm. A large deformation behavior of the diaphragm has been investigated using the commercial finite element program MARC K7.1. The several elastic moduli have been used in linear analysis and Ogden's coefficients have been used in non-linear analysis. As a result, it has been shown that the deformation behavior with a elastic modulus of $0.3 kg/mm^2$ is similar to the behavior of non-linear analysis. And, the modified diaphragm shape to reduce the stress concentration has been proposed.

  • Microarrayer is used to make DNA chip and microarray that contain hundreds to thousands of immobilized DNA probes on surface of a microscope slide. This paper shows the develop-ment results for a printing type of microarrayer. It realizes a typical, low-cost and efficient microarrayer for generating low density micro array. The microarrayer is developed by using a prependicular type robot with three axes. It is composed of a computer-controlled three-axes robot and a pen tip assembly. The key component of the arrayer is the print-head containing the tips to immobilize cDNA, genomic DNA or similar biological material on glass surface. The robot is designed to automatically collect probes from two 96-well plates with up to 12 pens at the same time. To prove the performance of the developed microarrayer, we use the general water types of inks such as black, blue and red. The inks are distributed at proper positions of 96 well plates and the three color inks are immobilized on the slide glass under the operation procedure. As the result of the test, we can see that it has sufficient performance for the production of low integrated DNA chip consisted of 96 spots within $1cm^2$ area.

  • In the current studies, we characterized the degradation of a hot mixture of benzene and toluene (BT) gases by a thermophilic biofilter using polyurethane as a packing material and high-temperature compost as a microbial source. We also examined the effect of supplementing the biofilter with yeast extract (YE). We found that YE substantially enhanced microbial activity in the thermophilic biofilter. The degrading activity of the biofilter supplied with YE was stable during long-term operation (approximately 100 d) without accumulating excess biomass. The maximum elimination capacity ($1,650\;g{\cdot} m^{-3}{\cdot} h^{-1}$) in the biofilter supplemented with YE was 3.5 times higher than that in the biofilter without YE ($470\;g{\cdot} m^{-3}{\cdot} h^{-1}$). At similar retention times, the capacity to eliminate BT for the YE-supplemented biofilter was higher than for previously reported mesophilic biofilters. Thus, thermophilic biofiltration can be used to degrade hydrophobic compounds such as a BT mixture. Finally, 168 rDNA polymerase chain reaction-DGGE (PCR-DGGE) fingerprinting revealed that the thermophilic bacteria in the biofilter included Rubrobacter sp. and Mycobacterium sp.

  • This study was performed to investigate chemical and functional properties of Glechoma hederacea leaves in respect to its potential use as food material or as a medicinal herb. The chemical compositions on a dry harris were 20.38% in protein, 3.96% in fat, 59.58% in carbohydrate, 15.78% in ash, 5.36% in reducing sugar, 14.11% in total sugar and 0.26% in polyphenol, respectively. The free sugars were mainly comprised of glucose, fructose and sucrose. In fatty acids compositiosn, linolenic acid showed the highest concentration at 45%, while the ratios of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids were 1 : 1.91. Seventeen kinds of total amino acids were determined, with the highest concentration (2,465.71 mg%) of glutamic acid. Among the free amino acids, praline showed the highest concentration (260.09 mg%), followed by glutamine, $\alpha$ -amino adipic acid, glutamic acid and valine. The contents of major minerals were 647.32 mg% in Na, 597.53 mg% in K and 239.75 mg% in Ca. The antioxidative activity of 10% water extract was similar to that of 50 ppm tocopherol. The nitrite scavenging ability reached the highest bevel at pH 1.2 and the lowest at pH 6.0.

  • The half-dried leaves of Stewartia. pseudocamellia were extracted with hot water (SPE) and partitioned with n-hexane (SPEH), dichloromethane (SPED), and ethyl acetate (SPEE) successively. SPE and SPEE showed significant inhibitory effects against melanogenesis and tyrosinase activities. By bioassay-guided isolation, ten phenolic compounds were isolated by column chromatography from SPEE. The whitening effect of the isolated compounds from SPEE were tested for the inhibitory activities against melanogenesis using B16 melanoma cells, in vitro inhibition of tyrosinase, and L-3,4-dihydorxy-indole-2-carboxylic acid (L-DOPA) auto-oxidation assay. A cytotoxic activity assay was done to examine the cellular toxicity in Raw 264.7 macrophage cells. Of the compounds isolated, gallic acid and quercetin revealed significant inhibitory activities against melanogenesis compared to arbutin. In particular, quercetin exhibited similar inhibitory activities against tyrosinase and L-DOPA oxidation without cytotoxicity. These results suggested that SPE could be used as a potential source of natural skin-whitening material in cosmetics as well as in food products.

  • High-energy ball milling was tested as a method for producing Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)- based nanodielectrics containing 1 wt% and 5 wt% OctaIsoButylPOSS (OibPOSS). Qualitative and quantitative evaluations were used to explore the compatibility between OibPOSS and PE. Several ball milling variables were optimized in a bid to achieve UHMWPE/OibPOSS nanodielectrics. The morphology, as well as the thermal and the dielectric properties of the samples, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and progressive-stress breakdown tests. The results showed that (i) ball milling was an effective method for producing UHMWPE/OibPOSS dielectric composites, but appeared ineffective in dispersing OibPOSS at the nanoscale, and (ii) the resulting UHMWPE/OibPOSS dielectric composites presented thermal and dielectric properties similar to those of neat UHMWPE.

  • We have prepared magnetic thin films of FeSiB by sputtering and examined microstructure and magnetic properties of the annealed films in order to investigate the feasibility of the films to microsensor application. Effects of vacuum annealing on the magnetic properties of $Fe_{84}$$Si_{6}$$B_{10}$ films have been examined as a function of temperature. The heating rate and the holding time were 10 K/min and 1 hour, respectively. Vacuum condition was held during cooling to prevent oxidation of the films. The coercivity did not show any noticeable change (~1500 A/m), although the grain size of the crystalline phase in the annealed films increased gradually up to about 16 nm until 673 K. However, both the grain size and the coercivity increased steeply when the annealing temperature increased over 723 K. Since the saturation magnetization is closely related to the phase evolution, the variation of the saturation magnetization of the annealed films was similar to that of the ribbon materials; the thin films were transformed from amorphous to crystalline with $\alpha$-(Fe,Si) phase by increasing annealing temperature.

  • A novel class of conjugated dendritic molecules bearing N-hexyl-substituted carbazoles as peripheral groups and various conjugative aromatic cores was synthesized through Heck coupling and the Horner-Emmons reaction. A multilayered structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS (30 nm)/emitting material (50 nm)/BCP (10 nm)/$Alq_3$ (10 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) was employed to evaluate the synthesized dendritic materials. The electroluminescence spectrum of the multilayered device made of 3Cz predominantly exhibited blue emissions. Similar emissions were observed in the PL spectra of it's the device's thin film. The multilayered devices made of 3Cz, 3BCz, and 4BCz showed luminance values of 6,250 cd $m^{-2}$ at 24 V, 3,000 cd $m^{-2}$ at 25 V, and 1,970 cd $m^{-2}$ at 36 V, respectively. The smallest molecule, 3Cz, which bore three carbazole peripheral groups, exhibited a blue-like emission with CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.17 and y = 0.21.

  • Recently, Inconel 625 is used widely in offshore processing piping in order to extend the maintenance tenn and improve the quality of anti-corrosion. According to the resistance to attack in various corrosive media at temperatures from $200^{\circ}C$ to aver $1090^{\circ}C$, in combination with good low- and high-temperature mechanical strength. In general, High quality weldments for this material are readily produced by commonly used processes. in recent years, the flux cored arc welding(FCAW) process is becoming more popular due to higher deposition rate and a better weld quality as compared to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process, at the same time, exhibiting equally good weld metal toughness similar to the SAW process. In this study, the weldability and weldment characteristics(mechanical properties and corrosive environment) of Inconel 625 are considered in FCAW weld associated with the several weld shielding gases($80\%Ar\;+\;20\%\;CO_2,\;50\%Ar\;+\;50\%\;CO_2,\;100\%\;CO_2$) in viewpoint of welding productivity.
