A significantly larger lateral load and moment are applied on a high speed railway bridge foundation than other bridge foundations. Therefore most of bridge foundations on Honam high speed railway project were designed by high strength steel pipe piles to resist lateral load and moment, which caused the increase of construction costs. In order to perform optimum design, it is important to estimate accurate lateral resistance when designing this type of structure. Lateral load tests were carried out based on the field design data with the purpose of examining the lateral behavioral characteristics of a railway bridge foundation. The standard load test method(ASTM D 3966) was used for field tests by applying twice of design load. Total four load tests were performed on high speed railway bridge foundations with strain gages installed by every 1m along piles to measure load-resistance characteristics under applied lateral loads. The back-calculated P-y curves from strain gages were compared with estimated P-y curves using theoretical methods based on geotechnical investment data. Back-calculated P-y curves from field tests for sand and clay ground conditions were presented in this paper, which are different from theoretical P-y curves. By using the research results of this study, more accurate estimations of pile design under lateral loads can be available for similar geotechnical conditions.
In this study, new design fire curves were suggested for the utilization in fire simulations. Numerical simulations with the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) were performed for the n-octane and n-heptane pool fires in the ISO 9705 compartment to evaluate the prediction performance of the previous quadratic, exponential design fire curves and newly suggested ones. The numerical results were compared with the experimental temperature and concentrations of $O_2$ and $CO_2$. The numerical results with the previous quadratic and exponential curves showed slow increase and decrease trend than experiments. However, the numerical results with the newly suggested 2 design fire curves showed more similar variation trend in temperature, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations than the quadratic and exponential curves. It was found that the newly suggested design fire curves can be possibly used in the numerical simulation of fires in a practical respect.
The recommended factored design wind load effects for overhead lattice transmission line towers by codes and standards are evaluated based on the applicable wind load factor, gust response factor and design wind speed. The current factors and design wind speed were developed considering linear elastic responses and selected notional target safety levels. However, information on the nonlinear inelastic responses of such towers under extreme dynamic wind loading, and on the structural capacity curves of the towers in relation to the design capacities, is lacking. The knowledge and assessment of the capacity curve, and its relation to the design strength, is important to evaluate the integrity and reliability of these towers. Such an assessment was performed in the present study, using a nonlinear static pushover (NSP) analysis and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), both of which are commonly used in earthquake engineering. For the IDA, temporal and spatially varying wind speeds are simulated based on power spectral density and coherence functions. Numerical results show that the structural capacity curves of the tower determined from the NSP analysis depend on the load pattern, and that the curves determined from the nonlinear static pushover analysis are similar to those obtained from IDA.
The lithium ion diffusion coefficients of bare, carbon-coated and Cr-doped $LiFePO_4$ were obtained by fitting the discharge curves of each half cell with Li metal anode. Diffusion losses at discharge curves were acquired with experiment data and fitted to equations. Theoretically fitted equations showed good agreement with experimental results. Moreover, theoretical equations are able to predict lithium diffusion coefficient and discharge curves at various discharge rates. The obtained diffusion coefficients were similar to the true diffusion coefficient of phase transformation electrodes. Lithium ion diffusion is one of main factors that determine voltage drop in a half cell with $LiFePO_4$ cathode and Li metal anode. The high diffusion coefficient of carbon-coated and Cr-doped $LiFePO_4$ resulted in better performance at the discharge process. The performance at high discharge rate was improved much as diffusion coefficient increased.
In this study we have investigated physical and electrical properties of high temperature oxide (HTO) thin film using dichlorosilane (DCS) gas. This film had low etch rate and excellent step coverage, and its characteristics of Si-O bond were similar to those of thermal oxide. I-V curves also showed similar electrical properties to those of thermally grown oxide (SiO2) while time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) results revealed 1/4 value of thermal oxide. However, defect density was measured to be much lower value than that of thermal oxide.
Investigating damage potential of the railway infrastructure requires either large amount of case histories or in-depth numerical analyses, or both for which large amounts of effort and time are necessary to accomplish thoroughly. Rather than performing comprehensive studies for each damage case, in this study we collect and analyze a case history of the high-speed railway system damaged by the 2004 M6.6 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake for the development of the seismic fragility curve. The development processes are: 1) slice the railway system as 200 m segments and assigned damage levels and intensity measures (IMs) to each segment; 2) calculate probability of damage for a given IM; 3) estimate fragility curves using the maximum likelihood estimation regression method. Among IMs considered for fragility curves, spectral acceleration at 3 second period has the most prediction power for the probability of damage occurrence. Also, viaduct-type structure provides less scattered probability data points resulting in the best-fitted fragility curve, but for the tunnel-type structure data are poorly scattered for which fragility curve fitted is not meaningful. For validation purpose fragility curves developed are applied to the 2016 M7.0 Kumamoto earthquake case history by which another high-speed railway system was damaged. The number of actual damaged segments by the 2016 event is 25, and the number of equivalent damaged segments predicted using fragility curve is 22.21. Both numbers are very similar indicating that the developed fragility curve fits well to the Kumamoto region. Comparing with railway fragility curves from HAZUS, we found that HAZUS fragility curves are more conservative.
Background and Objectives : Boundary detection and drawing are essential in 3D reconstruction of neck mass. Manual tracing methods are popular for drawing head and neck tumor. To improve manual tracing, circular boundaries overlapping was tried. Materials and Methods : Twenty patients with neck tumors were recruited for study. Representative frames were examined for shapes of outline. They were all single closed curves. Circular boundaries were added to fill the outlines of the tumors. Inserted circles were merged to form single closed curves(Circular boundary overlapping, CBO). After surface rendering, 3 dimensional images with volumes and area data were made. Same procedures were performed with manual tracing from same cases. 3D images were compared with surgical photographs of tumors for shape similarity by 2 doctors. All data were evaluated with Mann-Whitney test(p<0.05). Results : Shapes of boundaries from CBO were similar with boundaries from manual tracing. Tumor outlines could be filled with multiple circular boundaries., While both boundary tracing gave same results in small tumors, the bigger tumors showed different data. Two raters gave the similar high scores for both manual and CBO methods. Conclusion : Circular boundary overlapping is time saver in 3 dimensional reconstruction of CT images.

In an attempt to estimate the wetting properties of wettable metal layers by wetting balance method, an analysis of wetting curves of the coating layer was performed. Based on the analysis, wetting properties of UBM-coated Si-plate were estimated by the new wettability indices. The wetting curves of the one and both sides-coated UBM layers have the similar shape and show the similar tendency to the temperature. So the wetting property estimation of one side coating is possible with wetting balance method. For UBM of Si-chip, Cr/Cu/Au UBM is better than Ti/Ni/Au in the point of wetting time. At general reflow temperature, the wettability of high melting point solders(Sn-Sb, Sn-Ag) is better than that of few melting point ones(Sn-Bi, Sn-In).The contact angle of the one side coated plate to the solder can be calculated from the farce balance equation by measuring the static state force and the tilt angle.
The use of fragility curves in the design of bridges is becoming common these days. In this study, experimental data have been used to develop fragility curves for the potential of girder unseating of a three-segment bridge and a bridge-abutment system including the influence of spatially varying ground motions, pounding, and abutment movement. The ground excitations were simulated based on the design spectra for different soil conditions. The Newmarket Viaduct replacement bridge in Auckland was used as the prototype bridge. These fragility curves were also applied to the 2010 Darfield and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. The study showed that for bridges with similar characteristics as the chosen prototype and with similar fundamental frequencies, pounding could increase the probability of girder unseating by up to 35% and 30% based on the AASHTO and NZTA seating length requirements, respectively. The assumption of uniform ground excitations in many design practices, such as the NZTA requirements, could potentially be disastrous as girders might have a very good chance of unseating (as much as 53% higher chances when considering spatial variation of ground motions) even when they are designed not to. In the case of superstructures with dissimilar frequencies, the assumption of fixed abutments could significantly overestimate the girder unseating potential when pounding was ignored and underestimate the chances when pounding was considered. Bridges subjected to spatially varying ground excitations simulated based on the New Zealand design spectra for soft soil conditions with weak correlation shows the highest chances of girders falling off, of up to 65% greater than for shallow soil excitations.
The complex glow curves were split into isolated glow curves to be calculated the values of kinetic order, activation energy, escape frequency and density of initial trap from the independent glow curves using the mathematical method of thermally stimulated processes. The minimization of the intensity difference between measured and theoretical glow curve was done by the nonlinear least-square program. The results of the fitted curves were almost equal to the actual values of the parameters. Thermoluminescence from gamma ray irradiated ${\alpha}$-Al$_2$$O_3$ over the range of 300K to 600K was split into six glow curves. The kinetic order, activation energy and escape frequency of first glow curve were obtained as 1, 1.12eV and 6.79X10$\^$12/sec$\^$-1/, respectively, which were similar to the results of other method. Also the parameters of the second and the third glow curve and so forth were calculated.
