  • Electrically conductive yarn coated with silver particles are widely used to make smart wear but recent studies on smart fabrics are focused on measuring method of electrical characteristics and improving technologies of its electric properties. Also durability of conductive yarn with environmental change was also important work to make smart fabric. We compared resistance changes of silver coated conductive yarns under various physical and chemical conditions such as repeated strain, heat exposure and pH for basic informations on smart wear manufacturing process. And we deduct that repeated strain among the physical conditions was most effective factors on yarn resistance change and the low resistance change was observed with increasing the number of filaments in identical yarn fineness.

  • Recently, study of functional clothing for vital sensing is focused on improving conductivity and decreasing resistance, in order to enhance the electrocardiogram(ECG) sensing accuracy and obtained stable environmental durability on operation condition. In this study, four ECG fabrics that having different componnt yarns and weaving structures were produced to analyze their environmental durabilities and electric properties under general operation conditions including different physical and chemical stimulation. For outstanding electric properties and physical properties, the optimized ECG sensing fabric should consist of a fabric of 2 up 3 down twill structure containing 210de silver-coated conductive yarns and polyester yarn in warp and weft directions respectively. The selected fabric has $0.11{\Omega}$ which is relative lower resistance than otherwisely produced fabrics under ECG measurement condition. And it has 7% stable resistance changes under 25% strain and repeated strain.

  • Currently, e-textile market is rapidly expanding and the emerging area of e-textiles requires electrically conductive threads for diverse applications, including wearable innovative e-textiles that can transmit/receive and display data with a variety of functions. This study introduces hybrid nano-structures which may help increase the conductivity of the textile threads for use in wearable and flexible smart apparels. For this aim, Ag was selected as a conductive material, and yarn treatment was implemented where silver nanowire (AgNW) and graphene flake (GF) hybrid structures overcome the limitations of the AgNW alone. The yarn treatment includes several treatment conditions, e.g., annealing temperature, annealing time, binder material such as polyurethane (PU), coating time, in order to search for the optimum method to form stable conductive nano-scale composite materials as thin film on the surface of textile yarns. Treatedyarns showed improved electrical resistance readings. The functionality of the spandex yarn as a stretchable conductive thread was also demonstrated. When the yarn specimens were treated with colloid of AgNW/GF, relatively good electrical conductivity value was obtained. During the extension and recovery cycles of the treated yarns, the initial resistance values did not deteriorate significantly, since the network of nanowire structure with the support of GF and polyurethane stayed flexible and stable. Through this research, it was found that when one-dimensional structure of AgNW and two-dimensional structure of GF were mixed as colloids and treated on the surface of textile yarns, flexible and stretchable electrical conductor could be formed.

  • Recent advances in electronic technology have engendered a need for research on the use of smart materials in clothing. Electro-conductive fibers are expected to be a crucial element of wearable devices. Therefore, in this study, we have attempted to develop electro-conductive threads and cables using silver nanowires. Based on the characteristics of silver nanowire, in which electro-conductivity can be imparted via heat treatment, we prepared conductive threads by coating nylon yarn with silver nanowires and curing at temperatures of 140℃, 150℃, and 160℃. Conductive threads cured at 140℃ had the highest conductivity, followed by threads cured at 160℃ and 150℃ respectively. The order of the electrical conductivity of the threads after tensile testing was consistent with the original order of the conductivity of the threads. When we evaluated the sensing performance of electro-conductive cables fabricated from these threads, the cables manufactured from threads cured at 140℃ and 160℃ were found to function normally within temperature and humidity sensors. All the cables operated normally in illuminance and electrocardiogram sensors. Thus, we believe that threads made of silver nanowire have sufficient electrical conductivity to be utilized as wearable sensors.

  • In this study, the embroidery textile conductive wire of conductive yarn was designed into the wearable integrated clothing for sensing the infant's body temperature. To develop a high quality of the stable fiber-based textile conductive wire, firstly the five types of conductive yarns were twisted or covering polyester yarns and the coated conductive fiber with silver(Ag) or iron(Fe). As a result of comparative conductivity in conductive yarns of yarn processing, the 250 denier of conductive yarns with $0.74{\Omega}$/1~5cm were proposed and used for the integrated embroidery textile conductive wire for sensing. During experiments using the proposed embroidery textile conductive wire, measured resistance of thermistor according to the body temperature was correctly delivered to amplifier module, and showed feasible reliability of temperature sensing. As a wearable application, conductive yarns which takes forms of embroidery textile conductive wire would seems to be reliable as a conductive wire and could be replaced by the conductive metal wires.

  • The rapid development of smart textiles requires the large-scale fabrication of conductive fibers. In this study, we develop a simple, scalable and low-cost capillary-driven self-assembly method to prepare conductive fibers with uniform morphology, high conductivity and good mechanical strength. Fiber-shaped flexible and stretchable conductors are obtained by coating highly conductive and flexible silver nanowires (Ag NWs) on the surfaces of yarn and PDMS fibers through evaporation-induced flow and capillary-driven self-assembly, which is proven by the in situ optical microscopic observation. The density of Ag NWs and linear resistance of the conductive fibers could be regulated by tuning the assembly cycles. A linear resistance of $1.4{\Omega}/cm$ could be achieved for the Ag NWs-coated nylon, which increases only 8% after 200 bending cycle, demonstrating high flexibility and mechanical stability. The flexible and stretchable conductive fibers have great potential for the application in wearable devices.

  • In this study, brassiere prototype was developed for attaching the measuring module of ECG measurement and body movement while sleeping. For ECG measurement, textile electrodes was made of stretch fabric containing polyurethane in consideration of elasticity of brassiere band. It was used as a conductive yarn by silver coating on the warp. The textile electrodes was woven with twisted twill to increase the density of conductive yarns. The pressure of the brassiere band was enough to sensing stably the ECG, and the elastic band of the brassiere was designed to be wider than 3cm to install the textile electrodes inside, so that textile electrodes was close fitting to the skin at a constant pressure without lifting. The textile electrodes coated with silicon on rear was attached to brassiere elastic band, and the module was installed with a snap connector to textile electrodes of brassiere band. The module was suitable to monitering ECG measurement of a typical R peak, pulse rate and body movement while sleeping without interfering.
