  • Direct write technologies provide flexible and economic means to manufacture low-cost large-area electronics. In this regard inkjet printing has frequently been used for the fabrication of electronic devices. Full advantage of this method, which is capable of reliable direct patterning with line and space dimensions in the 10 to 100 um regime, is only made with all-solution based processing. Among these printable electronic materials, silver and copper nanoparticles have been used as interconnecting materials. Specially, solutions of organic-encapsulated silver and copper nanoparticles may be printed and subsequently annealed to form low-resistance conductor patterns. In this talk, we describe novel processes for forming silver nanoplates and copper ion complex which have unique properties, and discuss the optimization of the printing/annealing processes to demonstrate plastic-compatible low-resistance conductors. By optimizing both the interconnecting materials and the surface treatments of substrate, it is possible to produce particles that anneal at low-temperatures (< $200^{\circ}C$) to form continuous films having low resistivity and appropriate work function for formation of rectifying contacts.

  • Experiments with a URT-0.5 accelerator (0.5 MeV, 50 ns, 1 kW) generating a nanosecond electron beam for irradiation of silver nitrate in various liquid solutions (water and toluene) were performed with the aim of producing silver nanopowders. A radiochemical reaction allows making weakly agglomerated pure Ag powders with particles of 10-15 nm and 30-50 nm in size by irradiation in toluene and water respectively. The injection of the nanosecond electron beam energy to the solution is optimal. As the absorbed dose increases, the output of the radiochemical reaction does not grow, but more agglomerated powders are synthesized.

  • Well dispersed uniform silver coated silica was prepared by chemical liquid method. The optimum conditions for preparation of the silver coated silica were as follows: alkaline solution, reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 2 hrs, and amount of Ag of 5wt%. It was found that the prepared silver coated silica were far infrared emissivity of $0.916{\sim}0.918$ and antimicrobial effect of 99.9%.

  • In this work, a novel strategy is provided to prepare silver nanoplates by a fibronectin (Fn) nanofibril template. First, Fn molecules were controlled to assemble into amyloid-like nanofibrils in highly concentrated ethanol aqueous solution. The resultant nanofibrils could serve as a soft template to direct the formation of silver nanoplates. It is worth noting that the silver nanoplates are excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecule as a test probe. This high active SERS substrate can also be used to detect drug molecule, 2-thiouracil with high sensitivity.

  • In this work, the silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by electrical explosion of wire in three liquid mediums: deionized water (DIW), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) solutions. Absorption in the UV-visible region of these suspensions was measured in the range of 300-800 nm. A surface plasmon peak was observed at ~400 nm in all suspensions in measured wavelength range. Particle size was analyzed by transmission electron microscope. It showed that the particles had nearly spherical shape in all samples. The average particle sizes prepared in DIW, PVP and SDBS solution were 37, 31 and 27 nm, respectively. Stability of the suspensions was estimated by multiple light scattering method. The presence of PVP and SDBS surfactants in the exploding medium resulted in enhanced stability of the silver suspensions.

  • Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method from aqueous silver nitrate solution and borohybride as a reduction agent. The morphology, particle size and shape were influenced by the reaction conditions such as the concentration of $AgNO_3$, a reduction agent and addition of surfactant. The particle size decreased with decreasing the concentration of silver nitrate and using a borohydride. The obtained Ag particles showed the spherical shape with the range of 10-20 nm.

  • New materials are very useful due to their wide range of applications, however, they also have caused new pollutants that damage our environment. Chemists have been conscious of the severity of these environmental problems and a great deal of effort has been put into developing environmentally benign chemical processes to synthesize new materials (green synthesis). We also have reported a green synthesis method of synthesizing silver nanoparticles using water-glycerol solution in a previous study. While conducting further research, we have recently discovered that the size of silver nanoparticles is proportional to the quantity of water present in glycerol. This method is completely benign and ecofriendly pathway, as the size of silver nanoparticles is adjusted solely by controlling the quantity of water added to glycerol, without extra additives and energy.

  • Silver nanoparticles were prepared by reacting silver nitrate and trisodium citrate in an aqueous solution. Their size and shape were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The synthesis was carried with different silver nitrate concentration, addition of TSC, solvent, surfactant, ultrasonication, and dispersing agent. With higher concentration of silver nitrate or TSC, the particles became large or agglomerated. The SEM results showed that the nanoparticles have spherical and pseudospherical shape with a narrow size distribution. The hydrophobic solvent did not affect the dispersibility, but the hydrophilic solvent enhanced it. The addition of HPMC surfactant caused the size to increase (50-100 nm) with non-uniform shapes and partial agglomeration. The dispersibility was significantly improved by ultrasonication for over 3 hours after the addition of a dispersing agent. Complete dispersion was achieved by adding the dispersant, and the nanoparticle sizes were as follows: 30-40 nm (BYK-182) < 42-78 nm (BYK-192) < 51-113 nm (BYK-142). The nanoparticles were 38.45-46.28 nm after the addition of 2-4 wt% TSC in 0.002 M silver nitrate solution.

  • Silver particles were impregnated on carbon black with colloidal method and used as catalyst for oxygen electrode in alkaline fuel cell. With the addition of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate in $AgNO_3$ and $NaBH_4$solution, colloidal solution was made and confirmed with electrophoresis test. Effects of particle size on electrode performance were studied and $200{\AA}$ of silver particle size shown the highest value of mass activity. The aggromeration of silver particle was Influenced with surfactant amount, stirring time and heat treatment. Considering the increase of particle size caused of operating temperature, recommendable particle size of silver catalyst for manufacturing the electrode was $100{\AA}$. Dispersity of carbon black was investigated and reagglomeration was appeared after homogenizing 30 sec.
