This paper presents a detailed study focused on investigating the effects of silt content on the static and dynamic properties of sand-silt mixtures. Specimens with a low-plastic silt content of 0, 15, 30 and 50% by weight were tested in static triaxial, cyclic triaxial, and resonant columns in addition to consolidation tests to determine such parameters as compression index, internal friction angle, cohesion, cyclic stress ratio, maximum shear modulus, normalized shear modulus and damping ratio. The test procedures were performed on specimens of three cases: constant void ratio index, e = 0.582; same peak deviator stress of 290 kPa; and constant relative density, $D_r$ = 30%. The test results obtained for both the constant-void-ratio-index and constant-relative-density specimens showed that as silt content increased, the internal friction angle, cyclic stress ratio and maximum shear modulus decreased, but cohesion increased. In testing of the same deviator stress specimens, both cohesion and internal friction angle were insignificantly altered with the increase in silt content. In addition, as silt content increased, the maximum shear modulus increased. The cyclic stress ratio first decreased as silt content increased to reach the threshold silt content and increased thereafter with further increases in silt content. Furthermore, the damping ratio was investigated based on different silt contents in three types of specimens.

This study was carried out to improve our understanding about the influence of silt content on the stress-strain of sand under cyclic loading. Soil specimens were prepared by wet-tamping method as same void ratio and specimen's silt contents on total weights was changed from 0% to 20%. Also, effects of the silt contents on the stress-strain response were studied at different anisotropic consolidation ratio, Kc=1.0, 1.5, 2.0 condition. As a result, cyclic shear strength decreased as silt contents increased in same stress ratios. In same silt contents, cyclic shear strength increased as Kc increased in lower silt contents, but in higher silt contents, it had reverse results.

Low liquid limit silt, widely distributed in the middle and down reaches of Yellow River, has the disadvantages of poor grading, less clay content and poor colloidal activity. It is very easy to cause vehicle jumping at the bridge-embankment transition section when the low liquid limit silt used as the backfill at the abutment back. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests were carried out to study the physical and mechanical properties of the low liquid limit silt used as back filling. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was excited by active MgO and hydrated lime to solidify silt as abutment backfill. The optimum ratio of firming agent and the compaction and mechanical properties of reinforced soil were revealed through compaction test and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was used to study the pore characteristics and hydration products of reinforced soil. 6% hydrated lime and alkali activated slag were used to solidify silt and fill the model of subgrade respectively. The pavement settlement regulation and soil internal stress-strain regulation of subgrade with different materials under uniformly distributed load were studied by model experiment. The effect of alkali activated slag curing agent on curing silt was verified. The research results can provide technical support for highway construction in silt area of the Yellow River alluvial plain.

Silt curtains are constructed for minimizing pollution of sediment dispersion in water bodies. In spite of wide uses of the silt curtains, there are few studies for analyzing the effectiveness of them with respect to their dimension and hydraulic characteristics. Currently, the market of silt curtains does not provide the various dimension of them due to the limit of information regarding its effectiveness on reducing sediment pollution. In this study, a series of experiments were conducted to investigate hydraulic characteristics around the silt curtains under the different flow conditions. For this study, a silt curtain was fabricated and an open channel with 30cm of width and 40cm of depth was used. The results indicated that the silt curtain was not effective in preventing dispersion at flow velocities over 0.5m/s in real conditions. Based on the experimental results, it is required that approaching velocity should be minimized and the weight of bottom be increased in order to reduce deformation. The results of this study will provide information required to design appropriate dimension of silt curtains in various water environment such as velocity and water depths.

In this study, model tests of soft silt soils(ML) and silt soils was polluted with wastewater and waste oil from factories($ML_p$). Distribution of displacement, bearing capacity comparing the test results with existing theoretical expressions and analyzing the test results, the following conclusions were obtained. It was found out that in soft silt soils the relationship of critical surcharge and undrained cohesion is $q_{cr}=4.14C_u$ and polluted silt soils $ML_p$ those are $q_{cr}=1.78C_u$, respectively and the relationship of ultimate capacities $q_{ult}=9.53C_u$ and undrained cohesion in polluted silt soils are $q_{ult}=4.39C_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate capacity is less in polluted silt soils than in soft silt soils.
The study investigates the problems of silt protector used for mitigation measure of suspended sediments (SS) during coastal construction and provides their improvements based on the field investigation and analysis of the environmental impact assessment reports for the coastal development projects of Korea. The field investigation along west, east and south coasts of Korea reveals a variety of problems in the installation and management of silt protector solely used for the SS mitigation in Korea. Major problems include installation itself, low cost and quality of silt protector, and maintenance. These problems superimpose the effectiveness of silt protector in mitigating coastal environment impact. The present study provides the specific guideline on the project type needed for the installation of silt protector, installation standard and planning, maintenance and management. The study also suggests new mitigation options such as environmental window to limit the construction period and environmental dredger to compensate for the deficits of silt protector.
The Changgu Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of the west coast of Korea, is an area of extensive intertidal sedimentation. Three types of major sediment facies are identified based on grain size analysis: silt, sandy-silt, and silty-sand facies. It is found that intertidal sediment facies comprise a continuum of progressively finer sediments from lower flat to upper one. The X-radiography of the cores in the intertidal zone show a wide variety of physical and biogenic sedimentary structures. The major structures include bioturbation, current ripple and parallel-laminae. Bioturbations are observed in all core samples, especially in the silt flat zone. The degree of bioturbation increases laterally from sandy facies (low tide level) to silt facies (high tide level) due to favorable properties of fine mud for organisms. The ripple laminae, composed of current ripple foresets, characterize the silty-sand and sandy-silt flats. The parallel laminae are extensively bioturbated, and two types of laminae are distinguishable; thick-laminae with a thickness of 1 to 5mm and thin-laminae with a thickness of less than 1mm.
This study investigates reducing characteristics for the spreading of dredged soil and the diffusion of contaminant by silt protector curtain through three dimensional numerical experiment. The numerical medel is modified by combining the sediment transport characteristics for cohesive sediment into the previously developed model. Several numerical experiments have been given in order to investigate the reducing effect of silt protector using two dimensional numerical channel model under various parameters such as upstream flow velocity, depth of silt curtain and the position of dumped materials. Through the evaluation of several simulation results, we knew that the careful design has to be given in the determination of depth and position of silt protector.
In this study, a mathematical model for flaw with silt protector is proposed that adds a second-order energy loss term in the momentum equation. The three-dimensional numerical model was developed based on mathematical models and verified through comparison with flume test results. Loss coefficients were evaluated through the flume tests and applied to the numerical model. It was found through the investigation of various example cases that the downstream flow pattern was affected mainly by penetration of the silt curtain, not by the approach velocity, and also that the blocking effect of velocity was increased by the increase in mesh density of the silt curtain, below a certain mesh density. The blocking effect did not increase further above a certain mesh density.
The effect of non-plastic fines (silt) on liquefaction and pore pressure generation characteristics of saturated sands was studied through undrained stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests using cylindrical specimens of size 50 mm diameter and height 100 mm at different cyclic stress ratios and at a frequency of 0.1 Hz. The tests were carried out in the laboratory adopting various measures of sample density through various approaches namely gross void ratio approach, relative density approach, sand skeleton void ratio approach, and interfine void ratio approach. The limiting silt content and the relative density of a specimen were found to influence the undrained cyclic response of sand-silt mixtures to a great extent. Undrained cyclic response was observed to be independent of silt content at very high relative densities. However, the presence of fines significantly influenced this response of loose to medium dense specimens. Combined analyses of cyclic resistance have been done using the entire data collected from all the approaches.
