  • A comprehensive study on daily pupal weight loss due to histolysis and histgenesis in Bombyx mori Linn., has been undertaken. The percentag of pupal weight loss in the male pupa is higher than the female, conforming that the female pupa require more energy in the form of less pupal weight loss for ovipositional activities. The regression equation clearly shows higher percentage loss of daily pupal weight in male than female with respect to age and, this is also evident from the slope of the regression line. Moreover, analysis of the coefficient of correlation shows that the weight loss of pupa is directly correlated with the age rather than climatic parameters under which the pupa dwells.

  • Oral supplementation of zinc chloride to silkworm larvae in different concentrations (30, 60 and 90 ${\mu}g$/ml) to the fourth and fifth instar resulted in a significant increase in commercial traits, like larval weight, silk gland weight, cocooning percentage in lower concentrartion (30 ${\mu}g$) treated group. The female cocoon weight, shell weight and its ratio were significantly increased in 30 and 60 ${\mu}g$ treated groups, male cocoon weight, and shell weight in 30 ${\mu}g$ treated group and its ratio in 60 and 90 ${\mu}g$ treated groups, filament length, weight and moth emergence percentage in all the treated groups and egg productivity in 90 ${\mu}g$ treated group were increased significantly. The remaining groups did not show any significant changes compared with that of carrier control.

  • The effect of topical application with androstenedione on economic parameters was analyzed following treatment of last larval stadium. The treated larvae showed significantly increased larval weight along with other enhanced larval, cocoon and adult parameters. The larval period was significantly shortened in all the treated groups with increased cocooning percentages cocoon weight and its shell weight in female and filament length, weight and denier in all the treated groups. Hatching percentage increased significantly in dose dependent manner in all the treated groups when compared with the corresponding parameters of the carrier control group. This suggests that androstenedione can be used effectively for commercial silkworm rearing.

  • To elucidate genetical and biochemical characters of the white egg strains preserved in National Sericultural and Entomology Research Institute(NSERI), RDA of Korea, the genetic segregation ratios in egg colours were investigated by crossing test, and egg pigment precursors were also analyzed by paper chromatography and UV-spectrophotometer scanning. The result obtained by crossing test between the white egg strains and normal one illustrated that the most of white egg strains showed typical segregation ratio of white egg-2(w-2), while maternal inheritance which can be seen in white egg-1(w-1) was not found in any white egg strains. Paper chromatographic analysis showed that egg extracts of all the white egg strains contained 3OH-kynurenine, while kynurenine which is known to existed in white egg-1(w-1) could not be detected at all. From the results of these experiments, it was found that all the white egg strains preserved in NSERI were classified as the white egg-2(w-2) strain.

  • Four different backcrossing methods were designed and 23 near isogenic lines (NILs) of 22 linkage groups were obtained using Hb as recurrent parent, the mutant gene lines which held markers as donor parents. Eleven of them had been mated with the recurrent parent for 10 times, and the others for 7∼8 times. The NILs of other 6 linkage groups are under way and had been backcrossed to the recurrent for 3∼4 times. These NILs will act important roles in the construction of molecular linkage map and gene location and positional cloning.

  • The flacherie (FV) and Ina-flacherie (Ina-FV, named arbitarily) viruses of the silkworm, Bombyx mori was isolated from infectious larvae. Two types of infectious particles were purified by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Some properties of the purified particles were investigated. Electron micrographs showed that FV and Ina-FV were spherical particles with diameters of 27nm and 20nm, respectively. The sedimentation coefficient of Ina-FV was 80S.

  • Electroantennogram(EAG) can be applied to detect odorants since insects have highly specialized olfactory receptors inside their antennae. The characteristics of EAG parameters were investigated for the quantitative measurement of a general odorant using ammonia as a model odorant. The antennae of male silkworm moth, Bombyx mori, were used for the EAG. The electical signal curves generated from a pair of antennae originating from the same silkworm moth were never identical; however, they exhibited a typical type I or type II characteristic curve pattern for every pair of antennae. The correlation between the EAG parameters and the ammonia concentration was analyzed for the type I and type II antennae. The stability of each parameter was also investigated for each type of antenna. The results show the possibility of the quantitative measurement of general odorants using the EAG technique.

  • Six entomopathogenic fungus isolates, Beauveria bassiana J57A, Nomuraea rileyi J125A, Paecilomyces farinosus J3A, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus J50A, Metarhizium anisopliae J88, Aspergilius sp. J64A, causing muscardine disease and aspergillosis in the silkworm, Bombyx mori were investigated for their cultural and morphological characteristics (on PDA culture media within 14 days at $24^{\circ}C$). The results showed that they differ each other from the features of cultural characteristics (colony elevation, colony color, colony growth rate) or morphological characteristics (conidiogenous cell structure, phialides, conidia size and shape). Among cultural characteristics, colony color is the easiest recognizable character between isolates. The morphological characteristics of each fungal isolate correspond to the descriptions of current system of classification.

  • Kolar gold (PM${\times}$CSR2) is the most popular cross breed of India, especially in Karnataka. During January - February 2004 we observed several phenotypic variations leading to poor survival. Though occurrence of morphologically abnormal individuals is common, the extent of occurrence in the present report was on the higher side (upto 6 percent). It is unwarranted and not desirable in commercial silkworm rearing. The variations exhibited might be due to change in the environmental conditions like incubation temperature during embryonic stage or spontaneous mutation resulting out of environmental stress.
