Silica and polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) are silicone powders widely used as cosmetics. We synthesized silica-PMSQ composites via sol-gel method using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as precursors of silica and PMSQ, respectively. Shape of the composites was controlled by varying the ratios of TEOS and MTMS, which were used as silane monomers. Silica-PMSQ composites showed three different shapes, which were sphere-shape, raspberry- shape, and donut- shape. All of them had soft touch, easy water dispersion, and soft focus effect in common. However, each shape showed some differences in sense of use, adhesion, and strength of the soft focus effect. Raspberry-shape composite had the strongest soft focus effect, donut-shape one had the strongest adhesion, and sphere-shape one had the best in softness. Thus, it is concluded that by varying the ratios of TEOS and MTMS silica-PMSQ composites could be easily synthesized into different shapes, providing various functions. This method can be applied to manufacture functional cosmetics.

In this study, a composite phase change material (CPCM) produced using the SOL-GEL technique was developed as a thermal energy storage medium for low-temperature applications. Tetradecane and activated carbon (AC) were used as the core and supporting materials, respectively. The tetradecane phase change material (PCM) was impregnated into the porous structure of AC using the vacuum impregnation method, and a thin layer of silica gel was coated on the prepared composite using the SOL-GEL process, where tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the silica source. The thermal performance of the CPCM was analysed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). DSC results showed that the pure tetradecane PCM had melting and freezing temperatures of 6.4℃ and 1.3℃ and corresponding enthalpies 226 J/g and 223.8 J/g, respectively. The CPCM exhibited enthalpy of 32.98 J/g and 27.7 J/g during the melting and freezing processes at 7.1℃ and 2.4℃, respectively. TGA test results revealed that the AC is thermally stable up to 500℃, which is much higher than the decomposition temperature of the pure tetradecane, which is around 120℃. Moreover, in the case of AC-PCM and CPCM thermal degradation started at 80℃ and 100℃, respectively. The chemical stability of the CPCM was studied using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and the results confirmed that the developed composite is chemically stable. Finally, the surface morphology of the AC and CPCM was analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which confirmed the presence of a thin layer of silica gel on the AC surface after the SOL-GEL process.
Nano porous, transparent silica aerogels monoliths were prepared under ambient drying (1 atm, $270^{\circ}C$) condition by the combination of sol-gel process and surface modification with subsequent heat treatment. Three kinds of solvent, n-hexane, n-heptane and xylene, were selected in the point view of low surface tension and vapor pressure in order to restrain a formation of cracks during drying. Crack-free silica aerogels with over 93 % of porosity and below $0.14g/cm^3$ of density were obtained by solvent exchange and surface modification under atmosphere condition. Optimum solvent was confirmed n-heptane among these solvents through estimation of FT-IR, TGA, BET and SEM. Modified silica aerogel exhibited a higher porosity and pore size compare to unmodified aerogels. Hydrophobicity was also controled by C-H and H-OH bonding state in the gel structure and heat treatment over $400^{\circ}C$ effects to the hydrophobicity due to oxidation of C-H radicals.

Biphenyltetracarboximide-phenylene diamine polyimide/silica-titania ternary hybrid composites were Prepared by thermal imidization and sol-gel reaction. Fluorescence spectroscopic, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy studies revealed that the addition of small amount of titania showed profound effects on the microstructure and photophysical behaviors of polyimide/silica hybrid composites, when the content of silica-titania mixture was small or when the ratio of silica to titania in the mixture was high.
Silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by liquid-phase and alcohol reduction methods. Silver-doped silica-complex nanoparticles were prepared using a sol-gel process. The formation, structure, morphology, and particle size of the nanoparticles have been studied using several techniques. Silver nanoparticles of size of 30-40 nm were formed successfully by alcohol reduction. TEM images show that both the concentration and the molecular weight of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) considerably affect the size of the emerging silver nanoparticles. The number of silver-doped silica-complex particles increased by a mercapto-group treatment that showed a narrower size distribution than that of silica treated with amino groups. The silver/polyester and silver-doped silica/polyester masterbatch chips showed excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
Hydration and physical characteristics of chemically-bonded phosphate ceramic (CBPC) binder based on dead-burned Mg-O with six different blends are investigated for efficient repair construction material by retarding set phase with $H_3BO_3$. The test specimen of the blender with silica fume shows higher compressive strength after 75 days. The CBPC with silica fume results in higher modulus of rupture that others. The test specimens of CBPC eludes lower calcium ion than that of OPC (Ordinay Portland Cement). The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that hydration results in the formation of magnesium hydroxide, M-S-H gel and $MgCO_3$ for the specimen with silica fumes. Combination with calcium for MgO is not desirable due to no formation of chemical bond between two components. Based on the experimental program, the mixture of MgO and silica fume shows efficient performance in strength and durability.

Adsorption chillers have been receiving considerable attentions as they are energy-saving and environmentally benign systems. In order to evaluate adsorption rates, experiments were performed in the batch type adsorption apparatus. Three types of silica gels were investigated under an assortment of experimental conditions that are representatives of the actual operating environments in the adsorber of adsorption chillers. Experimental results revealed the effects of silica gel particle size, bed temperature, and fin pitch of fin tube on the adsorption rate. The $0.25\~1.18mm$ particle size of silica gel with high adsorption rate was selected as a suitable adsorbent. The measured adsorption rate became bigger with decreasing particle size. From the comparison of adsorption rate, it is found that the fin tube has about $21\%$ higher value than that of the bare tube. The effect of heat and mass flux is found to be more significant in the fin tube than in the bare tube.
Korean acid clays and silica gel were put into action on benzene solution of dye, such as aniline yellow, o-nitro aniline and oil orange, and then the adsorptivity of dye in nonaqueous solution was measured, with the result that adsorptivity was greater with silica than acid clays and it had no relation to acidity. And when chemical compounds, such as amine, alcohol, halogen derivative, were added to each dye solution by 10%(in volume), the change of the adsorptivity of dye by solid acid(that is, the interfered adsorption rate) decreased in order of amine > alcohol > halogen derivative, and in homologue the smaller the molecular weight, the larger was the effect. So adsorption in nonaqueous solution was a selective adsorption of chemical compounds which contained negative groups such as amine and hydroxyl radicals, and it had no relation to surface tension and showed inverted phenomenon of Traube series. It is guessed that the inverted phenomenon (the interfered adsorption phenomenon) was due to the polar chemical adsorption between active $SiO_2$ which was an origin of solid acid and the adsorbed substances, considering that the order of inversion was nearly in accord with dipole moment of added solvents. The results of this study led to find adsorption mechanism and inverted phenomenon of Traube series in nonaqueous solution.
In this study, new shock absorbing system was proposed using silica gel particles according to the nano-technology. For the design and real application of the proposed damper, an experimental investigations are carried out using colloidal damper, which is statically loaded. The porous matrix is composed from silica gel(labyrinth architecture), coated by organo-silicones substances, in order to achieve a hydrophobic surface. Water is considered as associated lyophobic liquid. Reversible colloidal damper static test rig and the measuring technique of the static hysteresis were described. Iufluence of the water volume and particle diameters upon the reversible colloidal damper hysteresis was investigated. Also, influence of the relaxation time on the hysteresis of the damper was investigated. As a result, the proposed new shock absorbing damper is proved as an effective one, which can be replaced for the conventional hydraulic damper.

The hard coatings on the polycarbonate plate were performed with the object of substitution the glass in the car to the polycarbonate plate. In this research, (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), colloidal silica (CS), and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) were used to prepare the coatings by sol-gel process. The optimum conditions and formulation to get the excellent physical properties of the coating were determined. GPTMS and CS were hydrolyzed in ethanol, and then APS was added in this solution. Using these solution the hard coating were applied to the polycarbonate plate. The smooth coating which got the 2 H class in pencil hardness was formed. And this coating showed excellent abrasion resistant and adhesion property.
