In the geochemical field, the chemical speciation of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) has been widely investigated by performing measurements to determine its luminescence properties, namely the excitation, emission, and lifetime. Of these properties, the excitation has been relatively overlooked in most time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) studies. In this study, TRLFS and continuous-wave excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy are adopted to characterize the excitation properties of U(VI) surface species that interact with amorphous silica. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) measured from a silica suspension and silica sediment showed very similar spectral shapes with similar lifetime values. In contrast, the excitation spectra of U(VI) measured from these samples were significantly different. The results show that distinctive excitation maxima appeared at approximately 220 and 280 nm for the silica suspension and silica sediment, respectively.

Researches on the drying of particle/polymer suspensions receive attentions in technical applications such as manufacturing display and batteries. In this study, the effect of polymers on drying behavior of silica/poly(vinyl alcohol) suspension was investigated in terms of suspension stability and stress development during drying. The effect of polymer adsorption was studied by changing pH. More strongly flocculated suspension with lower pH became more dispersed and close-packed film after drying. Evaluation of potential energy allows us to suggest that the adsorbed polymers which bridge the particles introduce steric repulsion and lead flocculated suspension to dispersed film. When the effect of adsorption kinetics was studied by changing the mixing time, the adsorption amount, characteristic stress and dried film density showed a similar behavior in the form of with a single characteristic time. It implies that the drying process can be determined by simple characteristic equation with a single time constant.
Colloidal particles of silica (100 nm in size) were electrostatically dispersed and adsorbed on a glass substrate coated with silica sol or alumina sol. Stability of the suspensions and microstructure of the adsorbed particle layers were discussed in terms of total potential energies between the particles and the substrate. Well-dispersed suspension resulted in a layer with densely packed and regularly arranged particles, whereas less stable suspension resulted in a porous layer with loosely packed and irregularly arranged particles. Despite repulsive interactions between the particles and the substrate coated with silica sol, the observed adsorption can be attributed to chemical bonds formed at the interface between the particle and silica sol. In contrast, the adsorption of the particles on the substrate coated with alumina sol formed a layer with strongly adhered and densely packed particles, due to large attractive interactions between the particles and alumina sol.

We made suspension of fumed silica in polyethylene glycol (PEG), studied rheological behavior as functions of contents of silica, dispersion condition, PEG molecular weight, temperature and contents of humidity. Rheological behavior of suspension was determined critical shear rate and rise of viscosity using rheometer AR2000. Suspension were PEGs of molecular weight 200, 400, and 600. Fumed silica suspensions of which silica contents are 5, 7, 9, 13, and 18% were prepared by normal mixing, homogenization and bead milling process. We observed their rheological behaviors at 10, 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C$. As the PEG molecular weight and contents of silica increase, the critical shear rate was lowered. As the temperature increased, the critical shear rate was increased. Humidity contents of dispersion don't influence on the critical shear rate, but dispersion processes greatly affect the critical shear rate. The critical shear rate of suspensions prepared by the mixing process was the lowest, and that of suspensions prepared by the bead milling process was the highest. The rise in the shear viscosity of suspensions prepared by the mixing process is higher than that of suspensions prepared by the bead milling process. This was dependent on the dispersion condition of silica particle by dispersion process.

From the formation of the monodispersed silica particle which is a valuable for the industry by Sol-Gel process, the effects of the parameters participated in the process, the growth mechanism and the characteristics of silica particles for each rection conditions are investigated. To investigate about the formation of final silica particles, the suspension which performs the polymerization is reacted with molybdic acid, and the evolutions of TEOS and silica particle size are investigated in the reaction time ? 새 the characteristics of molybdic acid with the suspension. From the results, a constant number of silica particle is formed at early reaction stage. Silica particles grow through the aggregation of smaller particles and nucleation is rate-limiting step for the growth of particles. In the conditions of this study, spherical silica particles are formed, [NH$_3$] and [$H_2O$] concentration increase the particle size but particle size decrease with [$H_2O$] concentration which is a certain above region. Average particle sizes are 187.4~483.3 nm and standard deviations in the average particle size are 1.7~2.9% with each experimental condition. From the BET results, specific surface area is 5.5~23.4 $m^2$/g and these values decrease with increase size. The average pore size is 50~70$\AA$.
This study compared two methods for preparing ancient DNA (aDNA) for the construction of successful shotgun libraries that may be applied to massive parallel sequencing. For the comparative analysis, the DNA of prehistoric rib samples from Hungary was extracted using either a manually prepared silica suspension or the Amicon Ultracel-15 10K ultracentrifugal device (Millipore). After the extraction of the same amount of bone powder (about 150 mg) from three samples by each method, the amount of extracted double-stranded DNA and the subsequent degree of construction of the shotgun library were analyzed. The Amicon device method was rapid and easier to perform and resulted in an approximately 11-fold higher DNA recovery than that obtained using the silica suspension. The shotgun library constructed using DNA templates prepared by the Amicon device was more successful than that constructed from templates isolated using the silica suspension. The comparative study of these two aDNA extraction methods showed that the Amicon device has the advantages of saving time, process simplicity, and high efficiency.
FePt nanoparticles suspension was synthesized by reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in the presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine. FePt nanoparticles were coated on a substrate by convective assembly from the suspension. To prevent the coalescence during the annealing of FePt nanoparticles double convective coatings were tried. First convective coating was for silica particle assembly on a silicon substrate and second one was for FePt nanoparticles on the previously coated silica layers. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that FePt nanoparticles were dispersed on the silica particle surface. After annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes under nitrogen atmosphere, FePt nanoparticles on silica particles were maintained in a dispersed state with slight increase of particle size. On the contrary, FePt nanoparticles that were directly coated on silicon substrate showed severe particle growth after annealing due to the close-packing of nanoparticles during assembly. The size variation during annealing was also verified by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). It was suggested that pre-coating, which offered solvent flux oppose to the capillary force between FePt nanoparticles, was an effective method to prevent coalescence of nano-sized particles under high temperature annealing.
Suspension polymerization with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer and AIBN as an initiator was conducted to synthesize PBMA particles and PBMA composite particles containing carbon black. Surface modification of silica particles by controlling pH revealed that 90% of them functioned as stabilizer and 10% were incorporated into PBMA particles. While stabilizer concentration had no impact on reaction kinetics and particle diameter, an increase in stabilizer concentration displayed an increase in molecular weights when it exceeded 1.67 wt%. An increase in initiator concentration and reaction temperature decreased molecular weights in close agreement with the theoretical equation. An increase in carbon black concentration from 1 to 7 wt%, relative to the monomer, showed a progressive decrease in reaction conversion. As carbon black was increased from 3 to 5 wt%, glass transition showed a $4^{\circ}C$ increase. The presence of carbon black was confirmed by TEM while its concentration was measured by TGA.

In this study, the colloidal silica grouts (PSG) with novel chemical compositions for permanent reinforcement and water cut-off of the ground were prepared and their engineering charateristics were investigated. The optimum mixing recipes for both homogeneous solution grouts and heterogeneous suspension grouts were investigated and established through many repeated lab tests. The various physical properties(such as compressive strength, durability and syneresis) of the grout gels derived from the colloidal silica were investigated and compared with those of the well-known existing watergalss grouts. The all experimental results showed that the novel colloidal silica grouts(PSG) had greatly excellent performances as permanent grouts, especially in comparison with the existing watergalss grouts.
