3D Sound Diffusion Control Using Wavelets (웨이블릿을 이용한 입체음향의 확산감 제어)

  • In this paper, we propose an idea for the improved 3-D sound system using conventional stereo headphones to obtain a better sound diffusion from the mono-sound recorded at an anechoic chamber. We use the HRTF(Head Related Transfer Function) for the sound localization and the wavelet filter bank with time delay for the sound diffusion. And we test the modified HRTF with the various sampling rate. We investigate the effects of the 3-D sound depending on the length of time delay at lowest frequency band. Also the correlation coefficient of the signals between the left channel and the right channel is measured to identify the sound diffusion. At last we obtain the diffusion sound using Cool Edit for reverberation.

Characteristics of Superconductive Pb shield for a Whole Head MEG System (헬멧형 뇌자도 장치로의 활용을 위한 Pb 초전도 차폐의 특성)

  • We have investigated the characteristics of a superconductive Pb shield for hemispherical shape and plate to improving signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of biomagnetism. We measured the shielding factor for the position of helmet shape Pb and for changing the distance from Pb surface. To make a uniform magnetic field, a $1.5m{\times}1.5m$ set of the helmholtz coils activated at several frequencies. The shielding factor of hemispherical shape Pb was from 20 to 57 dB and of Pb plate was about $6{\sim}26dB$ as a function of distance from the lead surface. The shielding factor was rapidly reduced as increasing the distance from Pb surface. The white noise of superconductive quantum interference device(SQUID) with a superconductive shield was about $12fT/Hz^{1/2}$ at 1 Hz, $7fT/Hz^{1/2}$ at 100 Hz. The white noise was more increased about two times than conventional SQUID system without Pb shielding. An auditory signal was measured by first order gradiometer and magnetometer with Pb superconductive shield and compared the SNR. The SQUID system with Pb shield had better performance at low frequency noise level.

Enhancing Medical Images by New Fuzzy Membership Function Median Based Noise Detection and Filtering Technique

  • In recent years, medical image diagnosis has growing significant momentous in the medicinal field. Brain and lung image of patient are distorted with salt and pepper noise is caused by moving the head and chest during scanning process of patients. Reconstruction of these images is a most significant field of diagnostic evaluation and is produced clearly through techniques such as linear or non-linear filtering. However, restored images are produced with smaller amount of noise reduction in the presence of huge magnitude of salt and pepper noises. To eliminate the high density of salt and pepper noises from the reproduction of images, a new efficient fuzzy based median filtering algorithm with a moderate elapsed time is proposed in this paper. Reproduction image results show enhanced performance for the proposed algorithm over other available noise reduction filtering techniques in terms of peak signal -to -noise ratio (PSNR), mean square error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), image enhancement factor (IMF) and structural similarity (SSIM) value when tested on different medical images like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) scan brain image and CT scan lung image. The introduced algorithm is switching filter that recognize the noise pixels and then corrects them by using median filter with fuzzy two-sided π- membership function for extracting the local information.

Sound Detection Characteristics Using Fabry-Perot Fiber Optic Sensor which Simply Supported in Structure (양단이 지지된 Fabry-Perot 광섬유센서의 음압 감지 특성 연구)

  • In this paper, fiber optic sensor using Fabry-Perot interferometer which had benefit of minimize and light-weight was used. The sensor head has 1cm in length, total length of fiber is 9.5 chi and the sensor supported at both ends, simply. To analyze the acoustic characteristic non-directional speaker is used as a sound source. Acoustic applied in lateral direction and detected two signals were compared each other. Below 1㎑ fiber optic sensor has more sensitive than microphone, but in 2㎑ fiber optic sensor has less sensitive than microphone. This characteristic varies to the supporting system of fiber optic sensor. It was confirmed that the Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor detected acoustic signal, effectively. This kind of sensor can be applied to the structural health monitoring field of intellectual structure.

  • Impact-echo test, a kind of simple and economical method to evaluate the integrity of drilled piles has some limitations to use because the stress wave can be generated only on the head of a pile and the wave propagation in the pile with surrounding soils are very complicated. Numerical analyses and model tests in the laboratory have shown that both the ratio of length to diameter of a pile and the stiffness ratio of pile to soil have influence on the resolution of testing results. Full scale testing piles which have artificial defects were used to verify the capability of impact-echo technique as a tool for the pile integrity evaluation. Behaviour of the reflected signal of stress wave was investigated according to the type of defects. Elastic modulus of the pile was calculated using the wave velocity in the pile and the unconfined strength of concrete specimen. Influences of the stiffness difference between the pile and the ground on the characteristics of a wave signal were also examined.

  • Experimental measurements of laser-induced ion mobility(LIIM) were performed for ethene/air premixed flames operated near the soot inception point. Soot was ionized using a pulsed laser operated at 532 nm. The ionization signal was collected with a tungsten electrode located in the post-flame region. ionization signals were collected using both a single electrode and dual electrode configuration. Prior LIIM studies have focused on the use of a single biased electrode to generate the electric field, with the burner head serving as the path to ground. In many practical combustion systems, a path to ground is not readily available. To apply the LIIM diagnostic to these geometries, a dual electrode geometry must be employed. The influence of electrode configuration, flame equivalence ratio, and flame height on ionization signal detection was determined. The efficacy of the LIIM diagnostic to detect soot inception in the post-flame region of a premixed flame using a dual electrode configuration was investigated. For the different dual electrode configurations tested, the dual parallel electrode geometry was observed to be most sensitive to detect the soot inception point in a premixed flame.

  • Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpression is associated with resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The EGFR modulates DNA repair after radiation-induced damage through an association with the catalytic subunit of DNA protein kinase. DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are the most lethal type of DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation, and non-homologous end joining is the predominant pathway for repair of radiation-induced DSBs. Some cell signaling pathways that respond to normal growth factors are abnormally activated in human cancer. These pathways also invoke the cell survival mechanisms that lead to resistance to radiation. The molecular connection between the EGFR and its control over DNA repair capacity appears to be mediated by one or more signaling pathways downstream of this receptor. The purpose of this mini-review was not only to highlight the relation of the EGFR signal as a regulatory mechanism to DNA repair and radiation resistance, but also to provide clues to improving existing radiation resistance through novel therapies based on the above-mentioned mechanism.

Development of the Wheel Disc Spinning Machine (휠 디스크 스피닝 성형기 개발)

  • The spinning machine has been developed for a bus and truck wheel disc which is manufactured by spinning process method. This machine has the mechanical structure with bed, 2-column, cross head, 2-vertical slide, 2-horizontal slide with forming roller, clamp slide and main spindle similar to large size vertical lathe. Main spindle attached the mandrel is rotated about 500rpm drived by 280kW power DC motor, and a rotating black material pressed on the mandrel with the clamp slide is spinformed by 2-forming rollers which are attached inner end of the 2-horizontal slides. The 2-vertical and 2-horizontal slides are actuated by the hydraulic cylinder which is controlled by the servo valve individially, and these servo valves are controlled by control signal of the CNC controller which is computed with position signal feedbacked from the encoder sensor. The developed machine can manufacture wheel disc of various section profile without mandrel change because section profile is easily modified using program editing in the CNC controller processor. The wheel disc manufactured by spinning process method has many advantages that the endurance is increased by 2 times and the weight is decreased by 30% compared with a conventional disc.

  • POC(Phase-Only Correlation) is a useful method that can conduct face recognition without using feature extraction or eigenface, but uses Fourier transformation for square areas. In this paper, we propose an effective face area to increase the performance of face recognition using POC. Specifically, three areas are experimented for POC. The frist area is the square area that includes head and space. The second area is the square area from ear to ear horizontally and from the end of chin to the forehead vertically. The third area is the square area from the line under the lips to the forehead vertically and from cheek to cheek horizontally. Experimental results show that the second face area has the best advantage among the three types of areas to define the threshold for POC.

Stairs Walking of a Biped Robot (2족 보행 로봇의 계단 보행)

  • In this paper, we introduce a case study of developing a miniature humanoid robot which has 16 degrees of freedom, 42 cm heights, and 1.5kg weights. For easy implimentation, the integrated RC-servo motors are adopted as actuators and a digital camera is equipped on its head. So, it can transmit vision data to a remote host computer via wireless modem. The robot can perform staircase walking as well as straight walking and turning to any direction. The user-interface program running on the host computer contains a robot graphic simulator and a motion editor which are used to generate and verify the robot's walking motion. The experimental results show that the robot has various walking capability including straight walking, turning, and stairs walking.
