  • In this paper, we propose a $M{\times}M$ beam-space multiple input multiple output (BS-MIMO) system using electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna. Conventional MIMO method required multiple RF chains because it map the transmission signals onto multiple antennas. So, conventional MIMO system has high cost for design and high energy consumption at RF circuit. Also, It is difficult to use MIMO system in battery based mobile terminals with limited physical area. In order to solve these problems, BS-MIMO technique which map the data signal onto bases in beam space domain was proposed using ESPAR antenna with single RF chain. This paper, we design and analyze the performance of extended $M{\times}M$ BS-MIMO technique. Simulation results show that the proposed BS-MIMO system has similar BER performance compare to conventional MIMO scheme. Therefore, BS-MIMO system with single RF chain will has a low RF power consumption and low cost for RF hardware design as compared with conventional MIMO technique with multiple RF chains.

  • Semi-diurnal internal tides and near-inertial waves are investigated using moored current meter measurements at four sites along the shelf break of the East China Sea during August 1987 and May-June 1988. Each mooring is equipped with four current meters spanning from near surface to near bottom. Spectral analyses of all current data reveal dominant spectra at the semi-diurnal frequency band, where the upper and lower current measurements show out-of-phase relationship between them with significant coherences. These are consistent with typical characteristics of the first-mode semi-diurnal internal tide. Strong intensification of the near-bottom baroclinic currents is observed only at one site, where the ratio of the bottom slope to the slope of the internal-wave characteristics at the semi-diurnal frequency is close to unity. An energetic near-inertial wave event is observed during the first half of May-June 1988 observation at two mooring sites. Rotary spectra reveal that the most dominant signal is clockwise rotating motion at the near-inertial frequency band. Upward phase and downward energy propagations, shown in time-depth contour plots of near-inertial bandpass filtered currents, are confirmed by cross correlations between the upper- and lower-layer current measurements. The upward-propagating phase speed is estimated to be about 0.13 cm $s^{-1}$ at both sites. Significant coherences and in-phase relationships of near-inertial currents at the same or similar depths between the two sites are observed in spite of their long distance of about 110 km.

  • Synchronized switch damping (SSD) is a structural vibration control technique in which a piezoelectric patch attached to or embedded into the structure is connected to or disconnected from the shunt circuit in order to dissipate the vibration energy of the host structure. The switching process is performed by a digital signal processor (DSP) which detects the displacement extrema and generates a command to operate the switch in synchronous with the structure motion. Recently, autonomous SSD techniques have emerged in which the work of DSP is taken up by a low pass filter, thus making the whole system autonomous or self-powered. The control performance of the previous autonomous SSD techniques heavily relied on the electrical quality factor of the shunt circuit which limited their damping performance. Thus in order to reduce the influence of the electrical quality factor on the damping performance, a new autonomous SSD technique is proposed in this paper in which a negative capacitor is used along with the inductor in the shunt circuit. Only a negative capacitor could also be used instead of inductor but it caused saturation of negative capacitor in the absence of an inductor due to high current generated during the switching process. The presence of inductor in the shunt circuit of negative capacitor limits the amount of current supplied by the negative capacitance, thus improving the damping performance. In order to judge the control performance of proposed autonomous SSDNCI, a comparison is made between the autonomous SSDI, autonomous SSDNC and autonomous SSDNCI techniques for the control of an aluminum cantilever beam subjected to both single mode and multimode excitation. A value of negative capacitance slightly greater than the piezoelectric patch capacitance gave the optimum damping results. Experiment results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed autonomous SSDNCI technique as compared to the previous techniques. Some limitations and drawbacks of the proposed technique are also discussed.

  • Proteins accumulated in dry, stratified Arabidopsis seeds or young seedlings, totaled 1100 to 1300 depending on the time of sampling, were analyzed by using immobilized pH gradient 2-DE gel electrophoresis. The molecular identities of 437 polypeptides, encoded by 355 independent genes, were determined by MALDI-TOF or TOF-TOF mass spectrometry. In the sum, 293 were present at all stages and 95 were accumulated during the time of radicle protrusion while another 18 appeared in later stages. Further analysis showed that 226 of the identified polypeptides could be located in different metabolic pathways. Proteins involved in carbohydrate, energy and amino acid metabolism constituted to about 1/4, and those involved in metabolism of vitamins and cofactors constituted for about 3% of the total signal intensity in gels prepared from 72 h seedlings. Enzymes related to genetic information processing increased very quickly during early imbibition and reached highest level around 30 h of germination.

  • Anesthesia, which started being used to remove pain during surgery, has become itself one of the major concerns to be considered during surgery. While actual anesthesia is being performed, patients tend to have unpleasant experiences, due to wakening that accompanies pain, or wakening that does not accompany pain. Since this awakening during anesthesia is a most unpleasant experience in a patient's life, evaluating the depth of anesthesia during surgery is essential for patients to avoid this experience. Although there has been much effort on the understanding and measurement of the depth of anesthesia, while various researches were performed on the need of anesthesia, the development of an indicator that could objectively evaluate the depth of anesthesia, other than by using the patient's vital signs, is still inadequate. Therefore, this study was to develop an objective indicator by using EEG and ECG, which are essentially measured during the surgery, to evaluate the depth of anesthesia. The experiment was performed by taking patients who require a relatively short operation time, and general inhalation anesthetics among surgical patients in obstetrics and gynecology as the subjects of experiment, to measure the EEG and ECG signals of patients under anesthetics. The result showed that SEF using EEG and LF, HF using ECG signal and correlation dimension analysis parameter were valuable parameters that could measure the depth of anesthesia, by the stage of anesthesia.

  • This paper presents a polarization switching antenna integrated with silicon RF MEMS SPDT switches in the form of a package. A low-loss quartz substrate made of SoQ (silicon-on-quartz) bonding is used as a dielectric material of the patch antenna, as well as a packaging lid substrate of RF MEMS switches. The packaging/antenna substrate is bonded with the bottom substrate including feeding lines and RF MEMS switches by BCB adhesive bonding, and RF energy is transmitted from signal lines to antenna by slot coupling. Through this approach, fabrication complexity and degradation of RF performances of the antenna due to the parasitic effects, which are all caused from the packaging methods, can be reduced. This structure is expected to be used as a platform for reconfigurable antennas with RF MEMS tunable components. A linear polarization switching antenna operating at 19 GHz is manufactured based on the proposed method, and the fabrication process is carefully described. The s-parameters of the fabricated antenna at each state are measured to evaluate the antenna performance.

  • In this paper the hardware implementation of the direct torque control based on the fuzzy logic technique of induction motor on the Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is presented. Due to its complexity, the fuzzy logic technique implemented on a digital system like the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and microcontroller is characterized by a calculating delay. This delay is due to the processing speed which depends on the system complexity. The limitation of these solutions is inevitable. To solve this problem, an alternative digital solution is used, based on the FPGA, which is characterized by a fast processing speed, to take the advantage of the performances of the fuzzy logic technique in spite of its complex computation. The Conventional Direct Torque Control (CDTC) of the induction machine faces problems, like the high stator flux, electromagnetic torque ripples, and stator current distortions. To overcome the CDTC problems many methods are used such as the space vector modulation which is sensitive to the parameters variations of the machine, the increase in the switches inverter number which increases the cost of the inverter, and the artificial intelligence. In this paper an intelligent technique based on the fuzzy logic is used because it is allows controlling the systems without knowing the mathematical model. Also, we use a new method based on the Xilinx system generator for the hardware implementation of Direct Torque Fuzzy Control (DTFC) on the FPGA. The simulation results of the DTFC are compared to those of the CDTC. The comparison results illustrate the reduction in the torque and stator flux ripples of the DTFC and show the Xilinx Virtex V FPGA performances in terms of execution time.

  • An advantage of a magnetostrictive strip transducer for a long-range guided wave inspection is that the wave patterns are relatively clear and simple when compared to a conventional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer. Therefore, if we can characterize the evolution of defect signals, it could be a promising tool for a structural health monitoring of pipes for a long period of time as well as an identification of flaws. However, when evaluating a signal during a realistic field examination, it should be careful because of some spurious signals or false indications, such as signals due to a directionality, multiple reflections, mode conversion, geometrical reflections etc. Mode converted signals from a realistic piping mockup were acquired and analysed. We found mode conversions between a torsional guided wave T(0,1) mode and a flexural F(1,3) or longitudinal L(0,2) mode generated by a magnetostrictive strip transducer. Based on the experimental observations, an interpretation of the source of the mode conversion is discussed in a viewpoint of electromagnetic properties and structure of the strip transducer.

  • This paper presents a preprocessing method to modify the input audio signals of a speech coder to obtain the finally enhanced signals at the decoder. For the purpose, we introduce the noise suppression (NS) scheme and the adaptive gain control (AGC) where an audio input and its coding error are considered as a noisy signal and a noise, respectively. The coding error is suppressed from the input and then the suppressed input is level aligned to the original input by the following AGC operation. Consequently, this preprocessing method makes the spectral energy of the music input redistributed all over the spectral domain so that the preprocessed music can be coded more effectively by the following coder. As an artifact, this procedure needs an additional encoding pass to calculate the coding error. However, it provides a generalized formulation applicable to a lot of existing speech coders. By preference listening tests, it was indicated that the proposed approach produces significant enhancements in the perceived music qualities.

  • A digital watermark Is a perceptually unobtrusive signal embedded in some multimedia asset such as an Image for copyright protection. In many cases watermark detection amounts to thresholding a correlation vague between a watermark and a received image. Watermarking detection schemes can be classified into two types. Type 1 is based on a correlation process that is applied to the difference between an original image and an input Image to be tested. Type 2 is based on a correlation process that is directly applied to an input Image. The type 1 fails to prove the rightful ownership, while type 2 has an advantage in terms of rightful ownership compared with type 1. However, type 2 has a problem that doesnt appear in type 1. The problem is that correlation between a watermark and an original Image to be watermarked is trio significant to be ignored, when it Is normalized by watermarks energy. In this paper, based on the analysis of the correlation, we propose a novel watermarking scheme to minimize the effect and also verify the performance of the proposed scheme by experiments.
