Tire force is one of important parameters which determine vehicle dynamics. However, it is hard to measure tire force directly through sensors. Not only the sensor is expensive but also installation of sensors on harsh environments is difficult. Therefore, estimation algorithms based on vehicle dynamic models are introduced to estimate the tire forces indirectly. In this paper, an estimation system for estimating lateral force and states is suggested. The state-space equation is constructed based on the 3-DOF bicycle model. Extended Kalman Filter, Unscented Kalman Filter and Ensemble Kalman Filter are used for estimating states on the nonlinear system. Performance of each algorithm is evaluated in terms of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and maximum error.

For simulation of a fin unfolding motion for the various aerodynamic conditions, equations and moments applying to the unfolding fin were modelled. Aerodynamic roll moment consists of the static roll moment and the damping moment, which were obtained through wind tunnel tests and numerical analyses respectively. Panel method was used to compute the roll damping coefficient with deflected fin, whose angle was equivalent to angle of attack due to the deployment motion. Roll damping coefficient is a function of angle of attack, sideslip angle, and deployment angle but not of angular velocity of deployment. Simulation with aerodynamic damping model gave more similar deployment time compared to fin deployment test results.
This study proposes a two-layer hierarchical control system that integrates active front wheel steering and four wheel braking torque control to improve vehicle handling performance and stability. The first layer is a robust model matching controller (R-MMC) based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which optimizes an active front steering angle compensation and a desired yaw moment control, and calculates reference wheel slip for the target wheel according to the desired yaw moment. The second layer is a moving sliding mode controller (MSMC) that can track the reference wheel slip in a predetermined time by commanding proper braking torque on the target wheel to achieve the desired yaw moment. Since vehicle sideslip angle measurement is difficult to achieve in practice, a sliding mode observer (SMO) that requires only vehicle yaw rate as the measured input is also developed in this study. The performance and robustness of the SMO and the integrated control system are demonstrated through comprehensive computer simulations. Simulation results reveal the satisfactory tracking ability of the SMO, and the superior improved vehicle handling performance, stability and robustness of the integrated control vehicle.
The distinguishing features of flows at high angles of attacks are caused by the generation of free shear layers at sharp leading edges, by separation of the viscous layers from the surfaces of wings and bodies and by the flow in the wakes of the wings and bodies. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vortex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticities over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Highly swept leading edge extension(LEX) applied to delta wings has greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.
High-sided road vehicles are susceptible to a sharp-edged crosswind gust, which may cause vehicle accidents such as overturning, excessive sideslip, or exaggerated rotation. This paper thus investigates the dynamic behaviour and possible accidents of high-sided road vehicles entering a sharp-edged crosswind gust with road surface roughness and vehicle suspension included. The high-sided road vehicle is modelled as a combination of several rigid bodies connected by a series of springs and dampers in both vertical and lateral directions. The random roughness of road surface is generated from power spectral density functions for various road conditions. The empirical formulae derived from wind tunnel test results are employed to determine aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle. After the governing equations of motion are established, an extensive computation work is performed to examine the effects of road surface roughness and vehicle suspension on the dynamic behaviour and vehicle accidents. It is demonstrated that for the high-sided road vehicle and wind forces specified in the computation, the accident vehicle speed of the road vehicle running on the road of average condition is relatively smaller than that running on the road of very good condition for a given crosswind gust. The vehicle suspension system should be taken into consideration, and the accident vehicle speed becomes smaller if the vehicle suspension system has softer springs and lighter dampers.
The aerodynamic performance of the pantograph on a high speed train was compared for different pantograph covers which are designed to block the aero-acoustic noise from the pantograph. For the study, two types of cover are designed: wedge and cone types. The lift force of pantograph with cover was compared with the force of pantograph only. The comparison clarified that the cone type cover increases the sideslip angle of the flow and decreases the lift force considerably. However, the wedge type cover changes the flow direction upward and increases the lift force of the pan head. This increment of lift force compensates the decrement of lift force caused by the blocking of the flow into the pantograph lower frame due to cover. Therefore, in case of the wedge type cover, the overall lift force changes slightly compared with the cone type cover.

A simple and effective guidance and control scheme that enables autonomous three-dimensional path-following for a fixed wing aircraft is presented. The method utilizes the nonlinear path-following guidance law for the outer loop that creates steering acceleration command based on the desired flight path and the current position and velocity of the vehicle. The scheme considers the gravity in the guidance level, where it is subtracted from the acceleration command to form the specific force acceleration command which the aircraft is better suited to follow than the total acceleration command in the inner-loop. A roll attitude control scheme is also presented that enables inverted flight or sideslip maneuvers such as slow roll and knife-edge. A series of aerobatic maneuvers are demonstrated through simulations to show the potential of the proposed scheme.
This is a research on the method of how to improve lateral stability for the small general aviation airplane to meet the FAR part 23 requirements. This research is based on the experience of certification flight tests of KC-100 airplane for Korea first type certification. KAS/FAR Part 23.177 is the static lateral and directional stability requirement. And, 23.177(b) requires to show the tendency to raise the low wing in steady heading side slip maneuver. However, it is very difficult for the low wing to be raised at the low speed during the steady heading side slip maneuver. So, the requirement allows not be negative at the $1.2V_{S1}$ speed and takeoff configuration. (static stability requirement requires low wing picked up at any speed except $1.2V_{S1}$ speed and takeoff configuration) In this paper, the static lateral stability requirements and the lessons & learned of KC-100 airplane certification flight test results are shown.

An air data acquisition algorithm has been developed for the supersonic flow at the preliminary design stage with pressure data acquisition device composed of major three total pressure sensors and two static pressure sensors. Through this algorithm, Mach number, angle of attack and sideslip angle can be very easily derived with simple interpolation algorithm and predefined data tables. In this preliminary design stage, to verify the developed algorithm, the data tables are constructed with data driven by Taylor Maccoll equation. Furthermore, these data are compared and modified with computational results based on CFD analysis. The present algorithm would be useful to get supersonic air data for the various aerial vehicles and their flight tests.

A study on the test, design and fabrication of wind tunnel model for measurement of air load distribution on wing surfaces is presented. 447 pressure taps are installed normal to the wing surfaces, and measured by PSI-8400 system using total 8 ESPs modules installed in the model. The test was performed at 50 m/sec constant speed in the low speed wind tunnel of Agency for Defense Development. Tests were carried out to determine effects of angle of attack, angle of sideslip and flap and stores for the load distribution of wing. The test results in this paper can be applied to the design optimization of structure and validation of computational fluid dynamics.
