Various types of hydraulic shock absorbers are widely used in many fields because of its numerous advantages. However, in order to design adequate damping characteristics, accurate flow data near the orifices are required essentially. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code, FLUENT is adopted to investigate the flow characteristics near orifices of a shock absorber. Static pressure and velocity vector distributions, fluid path lines are presented for compression/tension strokes and various piston speeds. In order to validate the result of analysis, the numerically obtained damping forces are compared with those of analytical estimations obtained by modified Bernoulli equation. The results reported herein will provide better understanding of the detailed flow fields within shock absorber, and the CFD analysis method proposed in this paper can be used in the design of other types of hydraulic shock absorber.
In the stroke sensitive shock absorber, the oil path is formed along the internal cylinder surface to make the oil flow during the piston's upper-lower reciprocation movement. In constrast with the conventional shock absorbesr which show one dynamic characteristic curve, stroke sensitive shock absorber shows two kinds of dynamic characteristics according to the stroke. In this study, in order to obtain more precise information about design and damping performance analysis, the analysis on the damping force generation process and dynamic behaviour characteristics of stroke sensitive shock absorber are performed by considering the valve characteristics.
In this study, a shock absorber whose orifice area changes according to the oil pressure inside the absorber is developed. The orifice widens and narrows when the oil pressure is high and low, respectively; thus, the orifice area changes according to the oil pressure, in other words, according to the extension/compression velocity. It is well known that the damping force can be expressed as $C{\cdot}v^{\alpha}$. For fluid film damping, the force is proportional to velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=1$, and for orifice damping, it is proportional to the square of velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=2$. The shock absorber proposed in this paper can exhibit different relationships between the damping force and velocity because the orifice area changes according to the induced oil pressure. The motivation of this study is to develop a method for designing a shock absorber with desired values of C and ${\alpha}$ which is not just 1 or 2. Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to verify the damping characteristics of the shock absorber. The effect of some major design parameters on damping characteristics has been also examined to relate the design parameters to the damping characteristics.
Shock absorber for rotorcraft landing gear should absorb landing impact during landing and isolate vibration to fuselage during taxiing. Double stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber is known to have better performances than single stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber. This paper deals with the z-direction translational acceleration at mass center, roil and pitch angular acceleration of fuselage for single and double stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber at nose landing gear when a 6DOF rigid model is taxiing on the pound.
In the stroke sensitive shock absorber, the oil path is formed along the internal cylinder surface to make the eli flow during piston's upper-lower reciprocation movement. With constraint to the conventional shock absorbers which show one dynamic characteristic curve, stroke sensitive shock absorber shows two kins of dynamic characteristic according to the stroke, In the study, analysis on the damping force generation process and dynamic behaviour characteristics of stroke sensitive shock absorber is performed, the valve characteristics being considered more precise information about design and damping performance analysis.
The safety and the durability of the shock absorber as an automotive chassis part under the fatigue load can be predicted in this study. The fatigue life becomes constant from 0.5 to 0.75 at the change of load which is the amplitude load divided by average load. But its life is sharply decreased at the change of load from 0.75 to 1.5. The influence of fatigue life according to the change of load can be predicted by these results. As the value of maximum damage is 9.61 at the middle part of upper side on shock absorber under the concentrated load, there is the greatest possibility of destruction at this part. The spring of shock absorber becomes nearly the state of pure shear and the uniaxial or biaxial stress exists at the rest part of it under the fatigue load.
In order to solve the conflict problem between the ride comfort and the road holding, the optimal design of shock absorber that minimizes the r.m.s. of sprung mass vertical acceleration and pitch rate with the understeer characteristics constraints in the high speed stability is proposed. The design of experiments and the nonlinear optimization algorithm are used together to obtain the optimal design of shock absorber. The second order regression models of the input variables(front and rear damping coefficients) and the output variables (ride comfort index and road holding one) are obtained by the central composite design in the design of experiments. Then the optimal design of shock absorber can be systematically adjusted with applying the nonlinear optimization algorithm to the obtained second order regression model. The frequency response analysis of sprung mass acceleration and pitch rate shows the effectiveness of the proposed optimal design of shock absorber in the sprung mass resonance range with the understeer characteristics constraints.
In this paper, a design optimization technique is presented for determining the stiffness and the damping coefficient of the shock absorber that is used in the Gullwing door system of passenger car. The contact force between the shock absorber and stopper link, when the door is opened, is set up as objective function, and the stiffness and the damping coefficient are set up as design variables. ADAMS optimization module (SQP method) is applied in the design optimization process. This study shows that the stiffness and the damping coefficient of the shock absorber can be effectively determined in initial design stage of the Gullwing door.
This paper presents design and control of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological (MR) suspension system for ECS (electronic control suspension). In order to achieve this goal, MR shock absorber is designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial mid-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured MR shock absorber, the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR shock absorber is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort and driving stability. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, the skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. In order to present control performance of MR shock absorber for ECS, ride comfort and driving stability characteristics such as vertical acceleration of sprung mass and tire deflection are experimentally evaluated under various road conditions and presented in both time and frequency domain.
Fall-arrest system have been widely applied to provide a safe stop during fall incidents for occupational activities. This research object to evaluate the energy capacity of fall arrest shock energy absorber lanyard in relation to the used super fiber. In this work, shock energy absorber lanyard was prepared using high tenacity PET, high tenacity PET/P-aramid and high tenacity PET/UHMWPE, respectively. Dynamic load and static load tests based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) were conducted. Maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of shock energy absorber showed below 6,000N. Also, static strength by static load test of lanyard and rope remains 15,000N and 22,000N for 1 min.
