The model exchange from CAD system to CAE system in valid and effective manner is the major issue of automatic analysis modelling of ship structure. However, model exchange approaches based on the neutral CAD file have resulted in invalid model exchange that could not properly reflect the characteristics of CAD model and CAE model of ship structure. This paper presents the new approach of n-to-n mapping to exchange ship structure model in heterogeneous CAD/CAE environments. In this study, the common model called 'unified ship model for analysis' to directly extract proper information from different CAD systems for ship structural analysis is proposed. Moreover, a command language based model interfacing technique to construct an idealized model for analysis job is also proposed. The proposed approach has been actually implemented in DSME CAD/CAE environment of ship structure such as TRIBON system, PATRAN system and FLUENT system. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the real analysis project for fore-body of ship and block lifting. This application results show that the proposed approach can be effectively used for heterogeneous CAD/CAE environment.

When the vibration troubles occur on the ship structure during the sea trial, the rectification work is very restricted because of in-situ limitation. Usually, the finite element method is used to improve vibration characteristics of the structure, but it takes lots of time and effort in modeling the structure and adjusting the finite element model in order to consider appropriate boundary conditions of a complex ship structure. Therefore, experimental methods have been in general suggested to obtain proper countermeasures without time-consuming in modeling. In this paper, FRE(frequency response function) synthesis method is applied to estimate natural frequency of the modified ship structure, which is obtained from experimental and numerical methods.

Recently, the vibration reduction at a local structure such as compass deck has been continuously requested by ship owner and shipbuilder. Because crews are afflicted with vibration, severe vibration problems even bring about a damage of structure. This study conducted to get an optimized stiffener size of compass deck to reduce the vibration level and decrease the weight of structure in ship. NASTRAN external call type optimization software (OptShip) which makes use of NASTRAN as a solver is used as an optimization tool. The results indicate that the optimum design is promising for real applications.

This paper presents the ballistic armor performance examination and thickness estimation for the latest naval ship structure materials in the Republic of Korea. Up to date, research regarding methods of ballistic experiments establishing database on the latest hull structure materials as well as a precise method of estimating required thickness of armor against specific projectiles have been rarely researched. In order to build a database and estimate proper thicknesses of structure materials, this study used four structure materials that have been widely applied in naval ships such as AH36 steel, AL5083, AL5086, and Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP). A $7.62{\times}39mm$ mild steel core bullet normally fired by AK-47 gun was considered as a threat due to its representativeness. Tate and Alekseevskii's penetration algorithm was also used to calculate a correction factor (${\alpha}$) and then estimate the armor thickness of naval ship hull structure materials with a given impact velocity. Through live fire experiments, the proposed method performance difference was measured to be 0.6% in AH36, 0.4% in AL5083, 0.0% in AL5086, and 8.0% in FRP compared with the experiment results.

Collision analysis problems between ship to ship can be generally classified into the external mechanics(outer dynamics) and internal mechanics(inner dynamics). The former can be also dealt with the concept of fluid-structure interaction and the use of rigid body dynamic program, depending on the ways handling the hydrodynamic pressure due to surrounding water. In this study, full scale ship collision simulation was carried out, such as a DWT 75,000 ton striking ship collided at right angle to the middle of a DWT 150,000 struck ship with 10 knots velocity, coupling MCOL, a rigid body mechanics program for modeling the dynamics of ships, to hydrocode LS-DYNA. It could be confirmed that more suitable damage estimation would be performed in the case of the collision simulations with consideration of surrounding water through the comparison with the collision simulation results of fixed struck ships without it. Through this study, the opportunity could be obtained to establish a more effective ship collision simulation technique between ship to ship.

As design trends has changed to have flexible aft hull structure, increased power output and stiffer shafting system, owners and classification societies have more concerned about shaft alignment. In the shaft alignment analysis, there are many uncertainties which are related in propeller generated force, bearing stiffness, crank shaft model and etc. in this study, it is focused on the effect of crankshaft model by comparing between equivalent model and actual crankshaft model.

Basically, ship structure consists of the plate members, and a strength of overall ship structurnds on the stiffness and strength of ship platings. If buckling which causes to deflect ship plate members occurs, the stiffness of ship plate markedly decreases, and thus buckling has a serious effect on the stiffness or strength of overall ship structure. Buckling is one of the most important design criteria when we scantle structure members. In the present study, a inplane rigidity of a compressed ship plate above buckling load is proposed. The proposed inplane rigidity is available in the elastic or elasto-Plastic ranges in order to can out a more efficient and reliable design.

Ship local structure sometimes experiences severe vibration due to the resonance with an excitation force generated by the propulsion system. In that case, the installation of dynamic vibration absorber such as Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) on the structure can be considered as an effective alternative countermeasure to reduce the troublesome vibration if structural modification or change of excitation frequencies is difficult. Meanwhile, the conventional optimal design method of TMD premises the target structure exposed on an excitation force without the constraint of its magnitude and frequency range. However, the frequencies of major ship excitation forces due to propulsion system are normally bounded and its magnitude is varied according to its operation speed. Hence, the optimal design of TMD to reduce the resonant vibration of ship local structure should be differently approached compared with the conventional ones. For the purpose, this paper proposes an optimal design method of TMD considering maximum frequency and magnitude variation of a target harmonic excitation component. It is done by both lowering the resonant response at the 1st natural frequency and locating the 2nd natural frequency over maximum excitation frequency for the idealized 2 degree of freedom system consisted of the structure and the TMD. For the validation of the proposed method, a numerical design case of TMD for a ship local structure exposed on resonant vibration due to a propeller excitation force is introduced and its performance is compared with the conventionally designed one.

The wing in ground effect (WIG) ship is an energy saying vessel that uses the lift from its air-wing along with the lift increase from the ground effect by flying low above the sea surface. The WIG Ship should consist of thin plate in order to float on the sea and to fly in the air. Therefore, the structure of WIG, Ship has very thin and light shell plate and stiffener like stringer and frame has comparatively large cross section area. This structure makes shell plate nearly pure shear field when shell plate is pressed by in-plane load. This complex thin plate structure of WIG Ship can he considered as a closed section beam which makes it possible to analyze structure response of WIG Ship affected by shear load and bending load. In this respect, the present study will show basic theory for analysing shear stress and focus on the analysis of structure strength of model WIC Ship's wing.

The internal deck structure of turtle ship has been investigated with the following approach manner. Firstly the 5 species of turtle ship are identified by examining the characteristics of 5 turtle ships revealed by the librarian or paintings. Secondly the centers of gravity and buoyancy for each type are calculated to evaluate the turtle ship's buoyancy stability. Thirdly the optimal deck structures for 5 turtle ships are additionally assessed from the viewpoint of the interoperability of soldier's missions to get more meaningful conclusion. From the results obtained by the well refined analyses above, one can identify that Changjeguyseon and Lee Chung Mu Gong descendent family's turtle ship possess one layer deck, and the tongjeyoung and jwasuyoung turtle ship consist of 1 and half story deck, and the one disclosed by Yoon has 2 story structure.
