A study on hydrodynamic coefficients estimation of modelling ship using system identification method

  • Predicting and evaluating ship manoeuvring characteristics are very important not only for the design stage, but also for the existing vessels. There are several ways to predict ship's manoeuvrability and most of them are highly connected with the estimation of hydrodynamic coefficients. This paper presents a new estimation method using the system identification with mathematical algorithms for estimating hydrodynamic coefficient in the ship's mathematical model. Specifically a double ended ferry which equips four azimuth propulsion systems were chosen as benchmark ship and a set of benchmark data which is generated in the fast time simulation software was provided to conduct mathematical optimization process. Also the initial values for the optimization were borrowed from the empirical regression formulas of the simulation software of Rheinmetall Defence ship simulator. Therefore the newly suggested mathematical optimization algorithm gave a successful result for estimation hydrodynamic coefficients. Proper optimization conditions of the objective function and constraints were also verified during the study.

  • The AIS(Automatic Identification System) transmits the position of ships and other information to prevent accidents which could occur in the sea. It has to be developed SOTDMA(Self-Organized Time Division Multiple Access) Algorithm which is important on wireless communication method for the AIS because It is based on ITU(International Telecommunication Union) M.1371-1 of the international standard therefore, we need to develop a performance evaluation simulator efficiently to develop and analyze SOTDMA Algorithm. This paper shows the method of designing it. Real ships access The VHF maritime mobile band but in this performance evaluation simulator several ship objects access the shared memory. Real ships are designed as the object and the wireless communication channel is designed as the shared memory. The ships apply for real virtual data which got from assistance hardware and The SOTDMA Algorithm driving state verifies the performance evaluation simulator by IEC(International Electrotechnical commission) 61993-2. After verifying results the performance evaluation simulator is correctly satisfied with IEC 61993-2. So we expect that it helps not only the AIS technology developed but also verify new SOTDMA Algorithm.

  • This study aims at improving the channel of Pudo-sudo in Chinhae-Man according to the development project of the port of Masan, by investigating the design criteria of harbour facilities for the maximum sized ship. The new deep-water route was proposed and according to it the present separation scheme was adjusted appropriately. The width of the deep-water route is suggested to be 350m and would be wide enough for the 30,000 DWT container ship to go through However, the proposed channel will be tested and validated by the shiphandling simulator.

  • Ship handling simulator has much merit to provide trainees with real-like circumstances in doing virtual education and training. To improve the quality of the education, it should be included both the mathematical model which can explain complicated ship's manoeuvrability and graphic tools for 3D images which can embody the visual scenes of reality on screen. This paper is focused on how to construct the marine environment DB(data Base) using S-57 data of ENC(Electronic Navigational Chart).

  • Berthing and unberthing maneuver is essential work for marine pilots and securing the safety against risks during the maneuver is more important than anything else. Moreover, the maneuvering environment in ports and harbors has changed rapidly and got worse due to development of a new port, the advent of a new type or large-sized ship, and the rapid increase in harbor traffic. As one of measures taken to cope with such changes in the maneuvering environment and for each pilot to improve his own maneuvering ability, this paper developed laptop-based ship-handling simulator which is readily available anytime and anywhere. This paper is to develop a conning display for ship's maneuvering and electronic chart based display widely used nowadays to represent a model ship's movement. The displays were arranged appropriately considering pilot age, easy handling by mouse, using a maximum screen, proper arrangement of rudder, engine, thruster, tug etc and representation of information. Up to now thirteen (13) model ships were developed based on real-ship, whose mathematical model is Japanese MMG & pilots' low speed maneuver.

  • This system is a FFS(Fire Fighting Ship) Training System to simulate real FFS Ship. In this system, Trainees get the skill of maneuvering and fire fighting and ability to make the best of situation by experiencing various scenario from instructors. In this case, There need to be an evaluation system to evaluate trainees objectively and acceptably. And the FFS Training Evaluation System was developed.

  • Assessment of the safety of ship's transit in the narrow channel consist of the maneuvering safety determined by the chance of running aground, the maneuvering difficulty determined by ship's workload and master's subjective evaluation. To examine the relation between master's subjective evaluation and maneuvering safety, this utilizes a real-time and full-mission shiphandling simulator in the Korea Marine Training & Research Institutes(KMTRI). The vessel chosen was 60,000-ton, Panamax-type ship. The findings regarding master's subjective evaluation were as follows: -Relation between master's subjective evaluation and common logarithms of stranding probability is linear. -Stranding probability with more than 0.001 is master's subjective evaluation with more than 5.

  • Efforts are being made to replace ship diesel engines with electric propulsion motors in response to emission regulations. In particular, in the case of short-range small ships, research is being conducted to replace polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) with power sources. However, PEMFC has problems such as slow dynamic response characteristics and reduced durability at high temperatures. To solve this problem, a high-precision ship model was developed with power distribution and thermal management strategies applied, and through this, the required power, heat, and power characteristics of the propulsion system according to the ship's speed profile were analyzed.

  • Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) have a high degree of autonomy and operate autonomously along a planned route. However, when necessary, the shore remote control center(SRCC) can directly intervene in ship operations. In this paper, the operation concept of the simulator system, which can be used to educate and train shore remote control officers, responsible for monitoring the operation of autonomous ships on land and remotely controlling them in case of an emergency, is reviewed. The required functions of the simulator system that enables the operation concept are also reviewed. The major parts of the SRCC simulator system are the monitoring station and control station, which simulate the functions of monitoring the operation status of multiple MASS and the functions of the remote operation of MASS in the case of emergency, respectively. Various units to simulate the operation of MASS and traf ic ships and various objects around the MASS are included in the simulator system. The instructor operation station is the central part of the simulator system that integrates and controls the unit systems. Functionally, as conditions under which SRCC is allowed to remotely intervene in the operation of MASS, the emergency situation for remote control (ESRC) has been defined. Moreover, the required functions to cope with these ESRC conditions have been included in the simulator system requirements.

OBTS(On-board Training System) Construction Plan for ROK Navy CVX (해군 항공모함(CVX)을 위한 함정 탑재형 훈련체계(OBTS) 구축 방안)

  • The ROK Navy is seeking to secure an aircraft carrier(CVX) to take responsibility for the maritime security of the Republic of Korea. In order for the CVX to complete the mission given to it, the crew must be able to operate the CVX perfectly, and for this purpose, the operating skills of the CVX crew result from constant training. Therefore, this paper proposes an On-board Training System(OBTS) so that the best training can always be performed even on ship. CVX OBTS should be built in the form of a thorough simulator based on a Synthetic Training Environment(STE) so that it can be optimally applied to ship and provide the best training environment to the crew. In order to satisfy the various training requirements and implementation conditions of the CVX, this paper proposes a plan to consist of Embedded Training System(ETS), VR training system, AR maintenance system, MR training system, MR metaverse training system, and realistic simulator training system.
