Effect of ginseng butanol fractions on the hepatic mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity with ethanol treatment was investigated in this experiment. Ethanol treatment, either acutely or chronically, increased the hepatic mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity compared to control group. Whereas, treatment with ginseng butanol fractions lowered the ethaol-induced monoamine oxidase activity. Acetaldehyde, the major metabolite of ethanol, significantly increased the hepatic mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity more than ethanol did. It was also observed that ginseng butanol fractions reduced the increase of the hepatic mitochondial monoamine oxidase activity by acetaldehyde. From these results, it is suggested that ginseng butanol fractions may be associated with the modulation of the hepatic mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity in ethanol-treated animals.
Asymetric system have been introduced in these years by KODAK company nam of Insight system for the purpose of improve the chest image. We have had a problem of chest radiology that it is very difficult to visualize the lung field and modiastinal region at one shot. That's why we are the RT using the technique of high voltage hard quality radiography in chest radiography. Also it is known the c-type wide latitude film can lift up the density of mediastinal structures. Authors investigated the photographic characteristics and physical structure of Insight system. Method 1. Investigated the structure of Emulsion layer. Calculated the particle size of Insight system using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). 2. Photographic characteristics has been compared the Insight system with the ortho KM/MG combination in $60{\sim}120kV$ range. Results 1. The particle size of backside film were investigated about 2 times larger that of front side film. 2. The front and backscreen's thickness ratio was detected 1 : 3.87, that the backscreen's thickness was thicker than frontscreen. 3. At the view point of photographic characteristics the frontside of insight system make up the contrast, backside make up the density at low exposure lesion.
Micropile was mainly used as one of underpinnig methods, and recently has been used for the various purposes such as foundation for new structure or slope stability etc. However, despite of the increase of the usage of micropile, studies about the horizontal bearing characteristic of micropile are insufficient. Thus the model test has been conducted to investigate the horizontal bearing characteristics of micropile with the length ratio and installation angle of pile. Consequently, micropiles at the installation angle of $+30^{\circ}$ and $-30^{\circ}$ effectively increase the horizontal bearing capacity, respectively for L/d ${\leq}25$ and L/d > 50.
With the increasing usages of micropile, several researchers have been studying the bearing characteristics of micropile or micropile-raft system. But most cases of research were focused on the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand layer. And it was not considered that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system was affected by the failure mode of soil and pile installation conditions. Thereby this study conducted the numerical analysis to estimate the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand or silt layer with different shear failure mode. It was found that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed in positive or negative angle was larger than that of the system installed in vertical angle, in the case of the sand layer undergoing the general shear failure. In the case of silt layer undergoing the punching shear failure, the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed only in negative angle was larger than that installed in vertical or positive angle. And the bearing capacity of foundation system in positive angle was similar to the vertical micropile-raft system.
Purpose: This study was performed to analyze the clinical and imaging features of contemporary osteomyelitis(OM) and to investigate differences in these features on panoramic radiography according to patients' history of use of medication affecting bone metabolism. Materials and Methods: The records of 364 patients(241 female and 123 male, average age 66.8±14.9 years) with OM were retrospectively reviewed. Panoramic imaging features were analyzed and compared between patients with medication-related OM(m-OM) and those with conventional, medication-unrelated OM(c-OM). Results: The age of onset of OM tended to be high, with the largest number of patients experiencing onset in their 70s. The 2 most frequent presumed causes were antiresorptive medication use (44.2%) and odontogenic origin (34.6%). On panoramic radiographs, a mix of osteolysis and sclerosis was the most common lesion pattern observed (68.6%). Sequestrum, extraction socket, and periosteal new bone formation were found in 143(42.1%), 79 (23.2%), and 24 (7.1%) cases, respectively. The m-OM group exhibited sequestrum and extraction socket more frequently and displayed significantly higher mandibular cortical index values than the c-OM group. Conclusion: We observed some differences in imaging features as shown on panoramic radiography according to the history of antiresorptive medication use. This study may help elucidate the predictive imaging features of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Steatocystoma multiplex is an uncommon benign skin disease, which typically manifests as numerous intradermal cysts that can be scattered anywhere on the body. Although usually asymptomatic, it can be significantly disfiguring. One type of steatocystoma multiplex is known to be associated with the autosomal dominant inheritance of a mutation in the gene coding for keratin 17 (KRT17). In such cases, it is often concurrent with other developmental abnormalities of the ectoderm-derived tissues, such as the nails, hair, and teeth. To the best of our knowledge, few cases have been reported of steatocystoma multiplex of the oral and maxillofacial region. This report describes a case of steatocystoma multiplex of both sides of the neck and multiple dental anomalies, with a focus on its clinical, radiological, and histopathological characteristics, as well as the possibility that the patient exhibited the familial type of this condition.
PURPOSE. This study was conducted to evaluate clinical validity of a zirconia full-coverage crown by comparing zirconia's wear capacity over antagonistic teeth with that of feldspathic dental porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The subject groups were divided into three groups: the polished feldspathic dental porcelain group (Group 1), the polished zirconia group (Group 2), and the polished zirconia with glazing group (Group 3). Twenty specimens were prepared from each group. Each procedure such as plasticity, condensation, and glazing was conducted according to the manufacturer's manual. A wear test was conducted with 240,000 chewing cycles using a dual-axis chewing simulator. The degree of wear of the antagonistic teeth was calculated by measuring the volume loss using a three-dimensional profiling system and ANSUR 3D software. The statistical significance of the measured degree of wear was tested with a significant level of 5% using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey test. RESULTS. The degrees of wear of the antagonistic teeth were $0.119{\pm}0.059\;mm^3$ in Group 1, $0.078{\pm}0.063\;mm^3$ in Group 3, and $0.031{\pm}0.033\;mm^3$ in Group 2. Statistical significance was found between Group 1 and Groups 2 and between Group 2 and 3, whereas no statistical significance was found between Group 1 and Group 3. CONCLUSION. Despite the limitations of this study on the evaluation of antagonistic teeth wear, the degree of antagonistic tooth wear was less in zirconia than feldspathic dental porcelain, representing that the zirconia may be more beneficial in terms of antagonistic tooth wear.
PURPOSE. The aims of this study were to suggest a method of fabrication of the record base using a light-polymerized resin by applying the two-phase fabrication method for the improvement of the fit of the record base and to compare the degree of fit according to the separation site. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In the edentulous cast of maxilla, four test groups were considered. In the first, second, third, and fourth test groups (n = 12 in each group) the separation was done at 0, 5, 10, and 15 mm, respectively below the alveolar crest along the palatal plane. For the control group, the record base was made without separating the two sections. The light-body silicone material was injected into the fitting surface of the record base. It was then placed onto the cast and finger pressure was applied to stabilize it in a seated position followed by immediate placement onto the universal test device. Finally, the mass of the impression material was measured after it was removed. ANOVA was performed using the SAS program. For the post-hoc test, the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum test and the Tukey-Kramer HSD test were performed ($\alpha$ = 0.05). RESULTS. The control group and Group 3, 4 showed significant differences. The Group 3 and 4 showed significantly smaller inside gaps than the control group which was not made with the two-phase fabrication method. CONCLUSION. The two-stage polymerized technique can improve the fit of the denture base particularly when the separation was made at 10 to 15 mm from the alveolar crest.
Objectives: In an effort to examine the distribution of THMs (Trihalomethane) generated from chlorine disinfection by the drinking water treatment plants located on the east coast region of Gangwon-do, this study surveyed the distribution and concentrations of each component of THMs twice per month for 5 years from 2008 to 2012. Fluctuation pattern in the seasonal generation amount was identified. In addition, the correlation between the concentration of organic substances in water and THMs was assessed, along with stability of purified water quality supplied by the water treatment plants on the east coast by analyzing the composition ratio of each component that constitutes THMs and the detection frequency. Method: The research was done on purified water supplied by 29 water treatment plants in 7 cities and counties (Goseong-gun, Sokcho-si, Yangyang-gun, Gangneung-si, Donghae-si, Samcheok-si, Taebaek-si) located in Gangwon-do on the east coast. Water samples were collected twice a month from 2008 to 2012 and were investigate for chloroform, bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform, based on analysis through Purge-Trap (Tekmar 3000) devices using FID-attached GC (HP 6890, Hewlett Packard). Result: THMs concentration detected at Gangneung-si was 0.0086mg/L, Goseong-gun 0.0019mg/L, Donghae-si 0.0099 mg/L, Samcheok-si 0.0016 mg/L, Sokcho-si 0.0057 mg/L, Yangyang-gun 0.0027 mg/L and Taebaek-si 0.0038 mg/L. As the THMs composition rate, chloroform constitutes 51.4% followed bybromodichloromethane 22.3%, bromoform 15.2% and dibromochloromethane 11.1% respectively. Conclusion: Throughout the entire THMs survey areas and period, the maximum concentration was 0.072mg/L, which did not exceed the water quality standards (0.1 mg/L), and the overall average concentration was very low at 0.0044 mg/L.
We report here a first evaluation of chilling-responsive gene regulation in the sweetpotato. The growth of sweetpotato plants was severely retarded at $12^{\circ}C$; the lengths of the leaf, petiole, and root were markedly reduced and microscopic observation revealed that the elongation growth of the epidermal cells in each of these organs was significantly reduced. We examined the transcriptional regulation of three sweetpotato expansin genes (IbEXP1, IbEXP2 and IbEXPL1) in response to various chilling temperatures (12, 16, 22, and $28^{\circ}C$). In the leaf and petiole, the highest transcript levels were those of IbEXP1 at $28^{\circ}C$, whereas IbEXPL1 transcript levels were highest in the root. IbEXP1 mRNA levels in the $12^{\circ}C-treated$ petiole showed a fluctuating pattern (transient decrease-recovery-stable decrease) for 48 h. In the leaf and petiole, IbEXP1 and IbEXPL1 exhibited a similar response to chilling in that their mRNA levels decreased at $22^{\circ}C$, increased at $16^{\circ}C$, and decreased dramatically at $12^{\circ}C$. In contrast, mRNA levels of IbEXP2 in the leaf fell gradually as the temperature fell from 28 to $12^{\circ}C$, while they remained unaltered in the petiole. In the root, mRNA levels of IbEXPL1 and IbEXP1 reached maximum levels at $16^{\circ}C$, and decreased significantly at $12^{\circ}C$. These data demonstrated that expression of these three expansin genes was ultimately down-regulated at $12^{\circ}C$; however, transcriptional regulation of each expansin gene exhibited its own distinctive pattern in response to various chilling temperatures.
