  • 1H NMR spectra of D2O solutions containing 2,2-dimethylaziridine (1) or 2-methylaziridine (2) and [SiW11COⅡO39]6- (SiW11Co) or [SiW11NiⅡO39]6- (SiW11Ni) exhibit separate signals for the free ligand and the complex, indicating that the ligand exchange is slow on the NMR time scale. Identified are two linkage isomers with the methyl group of 2 at trans or cis position with respect to the metal. The isotropic shifts of 1 and 2 coordinated to SiW11Ni originate mainly from the contact shifts, and they agree reasonably with the relative values reported for similar ligands coordinated to bis(2,4-pentanedionato)nickel(Ⅱ). The isotropic shifts for the SiW11Co complexes were separated into contact and pseudocontact contributions. The pseudocontact shifts show that (χ∥-χ⊥) is positive, while that for the SiW11Co complexes of pyridine derivatives is negative. This result indicates that the ordering of dxy and dxz, dyz orbitals in SiW11Co complexes can be reversed by ligands.

  • When 1H NMR spectra of pyridine, 4-amino-, 4-methyl-, and 4-cyanopyridine coordinated to the paramagnetic polyoxometalate, [SiW11CoⅡO39]6- in D2O are compared, both α- and β-proton peaks are shifted upfield as the basicity of the ligand decreases. The isotropic shifts are separated into contact and pseudocontact contributions by assuming that the contact shifts are proportional to the isotropic shifts of the same ligands coordinated to [SiW11NiⅡO39]6-. This separation reveals that the shift variations with the axial ligand basicity are dominated by changes in the magnetic anisotropy (pseudocontact shift) of [SiW11CoⅡ(ptl)O39]6- (ptl=pyridine-type ligand). The magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy in a series of pyridine-type ligands increases linearly as the pKa of their conjugate acids decreases.

  • Southeast Asia has been a showcase for democratic transitions in the past 30 years. This paper proposes a conceptual lens for studying political shifts in the Southeast Asian region. The argumentative storyline follows two fundamental propositions about democratic transitions. My first proposition is that during democratic transitions, human phenomena arise on nested analytical layers namely the global arena, the state, prodemocracy movements, and individuals. Each layer is conventionally studied by international relations, political science, sociology, and psychology respectively. I propose a multidisciplinary lens that transverses all these analytical layers. A second proposition is that during political shifts, social conditions are historically-situated. Historicity is anchored on stages of democratization, namely the authoritarian regime, toppling the regime, power shift, state building, and nation building. This paper describes a 4 × 5 matrix (analytical layer × historical stage) that may guide a regional agenda on the empirical study of democratic transitions in the Southeast Asian region. It likewise gives examples of research findings in Philippine-based studies that have already begun to provide empirical data about segments of this research matrix.

  • The cumulative sum(CUSUM) control charts are typically used for detecting small level shifts in process control. To control an auto-correlated process, the model-based control methods can be employed, in which the residuals from fitting a time series model are applied to the CUSUM chart. However, the persistent level shifts in the original process may lead to varying mean shifts in residuals, which may deteriorate detection performance significantly. Therefore, in this paper, focussing on ARMA(1,1), we propose a new CUSUM type control method which can detect the dynamic mean shifts in residuals especially with oscillating pattern effectively and, through the simulation study, evaluate its performance by comparing with other various CUSUM type control methods introduced so far.

  • PURPOSE. Perceived color of ceramics changes by the spectral power distribution of ambient light. This study aimed to quantify the amount of shifts in color and color coordinates of clinically simulated seven all-ceramics due to the switch of three ambient light sources using a human vision simulating spectroradiometer. MATERIALS AND METHODS. CIE color coordinates, such as $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$, of ceramic specimens were measured under three light sources, which simulate the CIE standard illuminant D65 (daylight), A (incandescent lamp), and F9 (fluorescent lamp). Shifts in color and color coordinate by the switch of lights were determined. Influence of the switched light (D65 to A, or D65 to F9), shade of veneer ceramics (A2 or A3), and brand of ceramics on the shifts was analyzed by a three-way ANOVA. RESULTS. Shifts in color and color coordinates were influenced by three factors (P<.05). Color shifts by the switch to A were in the range of 5.9 to 7.7 ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ units, and those by the switch to F9 were 7.7 to 10.2; all of which were unacceptable (${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ > 5.5). When switched to A, CIE $a^*$ increased (${\Delta}a^*$: 5.6 to 7.6), however, CIE $b^*$ increased (${\Delta}b^*$: 4.9 to 7.8) when switched to F9. CONCLUSION. Clinically simulated ceramics demonstrated clinically unacceptable color shifts according to the switches in ambient lights based on spectroradiometric readings. Therefore, shade matching and compatibility evaluation should be performed considering ambient lighting conditions and should be done under most relevant lighting condition.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine effectiveness of 12-hour shifts for nurses compared to 8-hour shifts for the variables: Work-Life Balance, fatigue and work errors. Methods: In 2014, an opportunity to choose a 12-hour shift duty was given to a group of 8-hour shift nurses. In 2016, two years after this change, this study was done to compare the two groups. Data were collected using questionnaires. Data were sampled by a matching method with propensity score matching (PSM). The participants were 128 nurses: 64 nurses on 12-hour shifts and 64 nurses on 8-hour shifts. The comparison was analyzed using $x^2$ test, t-test. Results: The nurses on 12-hour shifts showed higher scores for Work-Life Balance (3.37) than the groups on 8-hour shifts (2.99)(p=.018) whereas were no statistical differences between the groups for fatigue (p=.132) or work errors (p=.703). Conclusion: The Work-Life Balance scores for nurses who chose the 12-hour shift shows an enhancement without an increase in fatigue or work errors.

  • In this note we answer to a question of Curto: Non-first two equal weights in the weighted shift force subnormality in the presence of quadratic hyponormality. Also it is shown that every hyponormal weighted shift with two equal weights cannot be polynomially hyponormal without being flat.

  • The intrinsic and equilibrium isotope effects on the 13C NMR chemical shift of the cyclooctanone-2-D were investigated. Equilibrium constants and changes in the free energies, enthalpy, entropy, which are derived from the temperature dependence of the isotope shifts, are reported for this isotopomer.
