  • Some studies have been made on the effects of the attenuation on the result of ultrasonic examination of austenitic stainless steel weldment and also on the cause of false indications. The differences in the amplitudes and the metal paths of the ultrasonic examinations have been measured experimentally, for two kinds of waves, one passed through only the parent material and the other one through the weldment. The effect of probe angles and frequency on the examination data have been investigated using the shear wave. It has been found that the false indications were caused by back reflection from the weld metal surface due to the characteristics of ultrasonic wave propagation. It has been confirmed that the probe of $2.25\;MHz\;and\;60^{\circ}$ is the best choice in the ultrasonic examination and that the correction of amplitude for attenuations is necessary.

  • When the high-speed train running on the track, there is a speed band which track distortion is unusually increased according to the condition of track and roadbed. This speed is called critical velocity and physical parameter value increased greatly. These phenomenon happened as high-speed train were developed, studied regularly through TGV 100 running test in France. As research result until now, the main reason is soft roadbed's capacity. Wave propagation and track support capacity is varied by the site characteristics. This paper achieved theoretical examination about resonance band(speed and frequency) that occurred in roadbed on the base rock in point of geotechnical engineering. The examination of resonance divides with ground response analysis, critical band analysis by the shear wave velocity of roadbed, train critical speed through the ground stratum.

  • Impulsive shooting noise is basically complex phenomenon which contains the linear and non-linear characteristics. For those reasons, numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise has the difficulties in control of the numerical stability and accuracy on the simulation. In this research, Wave-number Extended Finite Volume Scheme (WEFVS) is applied to the numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise. In the muzzle blast flow simulation, the generation of the precursor wave and the induced vortex ring are observed. Consequently, blast wave. vortex ring interaction and vortex ring. bow shock wave interaction are evaluated on the shooting process using the accurate and stable scheme. The sound generation in the interactions can be explained by the vorticity transport theorem. The shear layer is evolved behind the projectiles due to the jet flow. In these computations, the impulsive shooting noise is generated by the complex interaction with shooting process and is propagated to the far-field boundary. The impulsive shooting noise generation can be observed by the applications of WEFVS and analyzed by the physical phenomena.

  • The GaN/sapphire layered structure is a potential candidate for high frequency devices due to high acoustic velocity of sapphire. Generally, the GaN thin films are epitaxially grown on c, a, and r-plane sapphire substrates. In this study, wave equations of GaN/sapphire structure were calculated according to crystallographic relationship between GaN layer and sapphire substrate. On each plane, the shear velocity was changed by the kH of GaN layer and propagation direction on sapphire substrate. We found electromechanical coupling constant of r-plane was better than the others. As a result, elastic stiffness and electromechanical coupling constant of materials are affected by a cut and an orientation of substrate. GaN/r-plane sapphire structure is more advantageous for high frequency SAW devices.

  • A band gap refers to a certain frequency range where the propagation of mechanical waves is prohibited. This work focuses on engineering three-dimensional Kelvin lattices having external band gaps at low audible frequency ranges using a gradient-based design optimization method. Elastic wave propagation in an infinite periodic lattice is investigated by employing the Bloch theorem. We model the ligaments using a shear-deformable beam model obtained by consistent linearization in a geometrically exact beam theory. For a given lattice topology, we enlarge band gap sizes by controlling the configuration of the beam neutral axis and cross-section thickness that are smoothly parameterized by B-spline basis functions within the isogeometric analysis framework.

  • The propagation of coherent time-harmonic elastic L-and SV-waves is studied in a medium with random distribution of cylindrical inclusions. The purpose of the research is to characterize the dynamic elastic moduli and the attenuation properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The cylindes representing the fibers are assumed to be distributed in parallel with each other and the direction of incident waves are normal to the cylinder axes. A multiple scattering formula using the single scattering coefficients in conjunction with the Lax's quasicrystalline approximation is derived from which the dispersion relation for such medium is obtained. In order to formulate the multiple scattering interaction between cylinders, the pair correlation functions are generated by the Monte Carlo simulation technique. From the numerically evaluated complex wavenumbers, the propagation speed of the average wave, the coherent attenuation and the effective elastic moduli are presented as functions of frequency and fiber volume fraction.

  • In order to evaluate the seismic capacity of massive vertical type breakwaters which have intensively been deployed along the coast of South Korea over the last two decades, we carry out the preliminary numerical simulation against the PoHang, GyeongJu, Hachinohe 1, Hachinohe 2, Ofunato, and artificial seismic waves based on the measured time series of ground acceleration. Numerical result shows that significant sliding can be resulted in once non-negligible portion of seismic energy is shifted toward the longer period during its propagation process toward the ground surface in a form of shear wave. It is well known that during these propagation process, shear waves due to the seismic activity would be amplified, and non-negligible portion of seismic energy be shifted toward the longer period. Among these, the shift of seismic energy toward the longer period is induced by the viscosity and internal friction intrinsic in the soil. On the other hand, the amplification of shear waves can be attributed to the fact that the shear modulus is getting smaller toward the ground surface following the descending effective stress toward the ground surface. And the weakened intensity of soil as the number of attacking shear waves are accumulated can also contribute these phenomenon (Das, 1993). In this rationale, we constitute the numerical model using the model by Hardin and Drnevich (1972) for the weakened shear modulus as shear waves go on, and shear wave equation, in the numerical integration of which $Newmark-{\beta}$ method and Modified Newton-Raphson method are evoked to take nonlinear stress-strain relationship into account. It is shown that the numerical model proposed in this study could duplicate the well known features of seismic shear waves such as that a great deal of probability mass is shifted toward the larger amplitude and longer period when shear waves propagate toward the ground surface.

  • Contrary to an intact rock, the jointed rock mass shows strain-dependent deformation characteristics (elastic modulus and damping ratio). The maximum elastic modulus of a rock mass can be obtained from an elastic wave-based exploration in a small strain level and applied to seismic analyses. However, the assessment and application of the non-linear characteristics of rock masses in a small to medium strain level ($10^{-4}{\sim}0.5%$) have not been carried out yet. A non-linear dynamic analysis module is newly developed for FLAC3D to simulate strain-dependent shear modulus degradation and damping ratio amplification characteristics. The developed module is verified by analyzing the change of the Ricker wave propagation. Strain-dependent non-linear characteristics are obtained from disks of cored samples using a rock mass dynamic testing apparatus which can evaluate wave propagation characteristics in a jointed rock column. Using the experimental results and the developed non-linear dynamic module, seismic analyses are performed for the intersection of a shaft and an inclined tunnel. The numerical results show that vertical and horizontal displacements of non-linear analyses are larger than those of linear analyses. Also, non-linear analyses induce bigger bending compressive stresses acting on the lining. The bending compressive stress concentrates at the intersection part. The fundamental understanding of a strain-dependent jointed rock mass behavior is achieved in this study and the analytical procedure suggested can be effectively applied to field designs and analyses.
