  • This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometric effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that the flow mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

  • By combining ultrasonic energy which is essential for the chain scission of polymer molecules and a multifunctional agent (MFA) having double bonds at its ends, we were able to modify the molecular structure of polycarbonate (PC) from linear to a branched structure during melt processing. The three double bonds in chain ends of MFA were expected to act as sites for trapping macroradicals of PC during the course of ultrasound-assisted mixing process. The transformation of molecular structure of PC was confirmed by the measurements of rheological properties of the modified PC. After the ultrasonic irradiation of PC together with MFA, increase in complex viscosities and shear-thinning behavior were observed. The Cole-Cole plot and measurement of extensional viscosities revealed the characteristic features of branched structure with well-defined extensional behavior which is comparable to that of a commercial branched PC.

  • A three-dimensional elastic blood vessel model with internal diameter variation is considered to investigate internal flow characteristics and effects of structural deformation. Also, computational analyses for both the rigid model and the fully-coupled FSI model have been conducted in order to compare the shear stress, pressure distribution, and flow velocity in detail. A 70% narrowing area of asymmetric blood vessel model was especially investigated to show the versatility of fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. The results reveal that effect of fluid-structure interaction is very important to accurately investigate the flow characteristics of the blood vessel.

  • In this paper, the modified direct method employing beam transformation technique is proposed in order to efficiently calculate hydroelastic responses of floating structure. Since the proposed method expresses the displacements of three-dimensional structure with those of transformed beam which leads to small number of equations of motion, the method is numerically efficient compared to the conventional direct method. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, a 500 m-long floating structure under wave loads is considered in numerical example. Displacements, bending moments, torsion moments and shear forces are calculated and computing time is examined. The results are also compared with those of the conventional direct method.

  • In trench excavation, essential factor of earth-retaining temporary work structure should be easy taking to pieces and movement, and dead weight must be less. This paper studies about the light weight material and application as earth-retaining structure to prevent the slope failure of sand soil ground caused by the variation of groundwater level in trench excavation. That is, light weight earth-retaining structural is proposed and a simulation with FEM on application of proposed structural in sandy soil is presented. The results are summarized as follows; (1) The study proposed FRP H-shaped pannel for the light weight member, and also presented estimation method about stability. (2) Mechanical property (bending moment, shear force, axial force, displacement) were changed according to groundwater level, but these values had been within enough safety rate and allowable stress. Therefore, proposed light weight pannel with FRP is available for bracing structure in trench excavation.

  • In this paper, the displacement-based seismic design approaches are evaluated utilizing shaking-table test data of a 1:3 scaled reinforced concrete (RC) bearing wall structure Provided by IAEA. The maximum responses of the structure are estimated using the two prominent displacement-based approaches, i.e., the capacity spectrum method and the displacement coefficient method, and compared with the measured responses. For comparison purpose, linear and nonlinear time history analyses and response spectrum analysis are also performed. The results indicate that the capacity spectrum method underestimates the response of the structure In inelastic range while the displacement coefficient method yields reasonable values in general.

  • This research deals with the nonlocal temperature-dependent dynamic buckling analysis of embedded sandwich micro plates reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs). The material properties of structure are assumed viscoelastic based on Kelvin-Voigt model. The effective material properties of structure are considered based on mixture rule. The elastic medium is simulated by orthotropic visco-Pasternak medium. The motion equations are derived applying Sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) in which the size effects are considered using Eringen's nonlocal theory. The differential quadrature (DQ) method in conjunction with the Bolotin's methods is applied for calculating resonance frequency and dynamic instability region (DIR) of structure. The effects of different parameters such as volume percent of CNTs, distribution type of CNTs, temperature, nonlocal parameter and structural damping on the dynamic instability of visco-system are shown. The results are compared with other published works in the literature. Results indicate that the CNTs have an important role in dynamic stability of structure and FGX distribution type is the better choice.

  • This paper presents a vibration control of a flexible structure using a controllable ER fluid damper. A clamped-clamped flexible structure system supported by two short columns mimicking a small-sized bridge system is considered. An ER fluid damper which is operated in shear mode is designed and attached to the middle of the flexible structure. The governing equation of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. A sliding mode control is formulated in order to actively suppress the vibration of the structure due to external excitations. Experimental control results are presented in the frequency domain.

  • In this project, buckling response of polymeric plates reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and coated by magnetostrictive layer was studied. The equivalent nanocomposite properties are determined using Mori-Tanak model considering agglomeration effects. The structure is simulated with first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Employing strains-displacements, stress-strain, the energy equations of the structure are obtained. Using Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived considering the coupling of mechanical displacements and magnetic field. Using Navier method, the buckling load of the sandwich structure is obtained. The influences of volume percent and agglomeration of CNTs, geometrical parameters and magnetic field on the buckling load are investigated. Results show that with increasing volume percent of CNTs, the buckling load increases. In addition, applying magnetic field, increases the frequency of the sandwich structure.

  • This paper presents the design for the kinematic structure of a system for an automatically moored 6000 ton autonomous ship in a port, and the process and results of optimal design for the link cross-sectional shape. We propose an automatic mooring system with a PPP type serial manipulator structure capable of linear motion in the XYZ axis. The mooring force applied by the mooring system was derived with dynamics simulation tool "ADAMS". The design goal is the minimization of the cross-sectional area of the link. Constrains include compressive stress and shear stress. The optimization problems were solved by using the sequential quadratic programing method implemented in the fmincon package. The shape of the cross section was assumed to be rectangle. Through future research, we plan to manufacture automatic mooring system for 6000ton class autonomous ship.
