The interaction of a travelling shock with the shear layer of a flat plate is studied computationally. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically on quadrilateral unstructured adaptive grids. The flat plate is installed horizontally on the central axis of a shock tube. The shear layer is first created by two shock waves at different speeds splitted by a flat plate. A series of small vortices is developed as a consequence in the shear layer. The shock wave reflected at the end wall impinges the shear layer. The complicated shock dynamics in the evolution to the pseudo-steady state is represented with the morphological transformation of a planar shock into an oblique shock.
In this study, atomistic simulations are performed to study the effect of Al solute on the behaviour of edge dislocation in Mg alloys. After the dissociation of an Mg basal edge dislocation into two Shockley partials using molecular mechanics, the interaction between the dislocation and Al solute at different temperatures is studied using molecular dynamics. It appears from the simulations that the critical shear stress increases with the Al solute concentration. Comparing with the solute effect at T = 0 K, however, the critical shear stress at a finite temperature is lower since the kinetic energy of the atoms can help the dislocation conquer the energy barriers created by the Al atoms. The velocity of the edge dislocation decreases as the Al concentration increases when the external shear stress is relatively small regardless of temperature. The Al concentration effect on the dislocation velocity is not significant at very high shear stress level when the solute concentration is below 4.0 at%. Drag coefficient B increases with the Al concentration when the stress to temperature ratio is below 0.3 MPa/K, although the effect is more significant at low temperatures.
The seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns is a significant issue because the interaction of flexural ductility and shear capacity of such columns with varied amounts of lateral reinforcement is not well established. Several relationships between flexural ductility and shear capacity have been proposed by various researchers in the past. In this paper, a parametric study on RC bridge columns is conducted using a nonlinear finite element program, "Simulation of Concrete Structures (SCS)", developed at the University of Houston. SCS has been previously used to predict the seismic behavior of such columns. The predicted results were compared with the test results obtained from experiments available in literature. Based on the results of the parametric study performed in this paper, a set of new relationships between flexural ductility and shear capacity of RC columns is proposed for seismic design.

Response spectra of a building are made with a SDOF system taking into account a first mode shape, even though higher modes may affect on the dynamic responses of a high-rise building. A soft soil layer under a building also affects on the responses of a building. In this study, seismic responses of a MDOF system were investigated to examine the effects of higher modes on the response of a tall building by comparing them with those of a SDOF system including the kinematic interaction effect. Study was performed using a pseudo 3D finite element program with seven bedrock earthquake records downloaded from the PEER database. Effects of higher modes on the seismic responses of a tall building were investigated for base shear force and base moment of a MDOF system including story shear forces and story moments. Study results show that higher modes of a MDOF system contribute to a reduction of base shear force up to 1/4-1/5 of KBC and base moment. The effect of higher modes is more significant on the base shear force than on the base moment. Maximum story shear force and moment occurred at the top part of a building rather than at a base in the cases of tall buildings differently from short buildings, and higher modes of a tall building affected on the base forces making them almost constant at the base. A soft soil layer also affects some on the base shear force of a high-rise building independently on the soft soil type, but a soft soil effect is prominent on the base moment.

RC shear walls are considered one of the main lateral resisting members in buildings. In recent years, FRP has been widely utilized in order to strengthen and retrofit concrete structures. A number of experimental studies used CFRP sheets as an external bracing system for retrofitting of RC shear walls. It has been found that the common mode of failure is the debonding of the CFRP-concrete adhesive material. In this study, behavior of RC shear wall was investigated with three different micro models. The analysis included 2D model using plane stress element, 3D model using shell element and 3D model using solid element. To allow for the debonding mode of failure, the adhesive layer was modeled using cohesive surface-to-surface interaction model at 3D analysis model and node-to-node interaction method using Cartesian elastic-plastic connector element at 2D analysis model. The FE model results are validated comparing the experimental results in the literature. It is shown that the proposed FE model can predict the modes of failure due to debonding of CFRP and behavior of CFRP strengthened RC shear wall reasonably well. Additionally, using 2D plane stress model, many parameters on the behavior of the cohesive surfaces are investigated such as fracture energy, interfacial shear stress, partial bonding, proposed CFRP anchor location and using different bracing of CFRP strips. Using two anchors near end of each diagonal CFRP strips delay the end debonding and increase the ductility for RC shear walls.
Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.
This paper aims to experimentally investigate the in-fire performance of composite beams with respect to the effects of load ratio and shear interaction. Under a Standard ISO834 fire, the development of temperature and deflection of simply supported composite beams were recorded. In particular, the transition of temperature distribution across the cross-section. The fire resistance of composite beam was interpreted regarding the level of shear interaction.
Beams strengthened in shear with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) which had different transverse reinforcement ratio were tested to evaluate shear contribution in the CFRP and to analyze shear behavior of each test with Mohr's circle. Strain in the CFRP should be evaluated to estimate the shear contribution in the CFRP which is brittle material. Test results were compared each other based on the Mohr's circle which can correlate shear strain with both principal tensile strain and crack angle. With low transverse steel ratio, shear strengthening with CFRP not only increases the shear strength effectively but also minimizes the loss in shear contribution of concrete by limiting the development of crack. With high transverse steel ratio, the effect on shear strengthening with CFRP is not as much as the beam with low ratio. Therefore, the shear contribution in the CFRP should be evaluated based on the strain compatibility which can consider the interaction between steel and CFRP when determining the shear capacity of a strengthened member.

The objective of this paper is to show that the soil-geotextile interaction needs to he addressed in addition to the usual tensile and modulus properties when the geotextile is being designed for a specific application. The soil-geotextile interaction can be directly assessed by standard direct shear test. The data presented here show that the shear strength paramaters describing the soil-geotextile interface can he greatly influenced by the type of the geotextile. In this investigation, we examined nine different geotextiles of varying construction and surface textures with two standard soil, under five loading conditions, and compared the shear strength and the frictional resistance with the corresponding values of soil itself The following conclusions were drawned from this study. 1. The shear stress-strain curve shows that there are the residual shear stresses at the soil-geotextile interface. Because of the hydraulic gradient between the soil and the geotextile, the excessive pore water can migrate into the geotextile and among the filaments and dissipate through the soil-geotextile interface. 2. The shear strength of the soil-geotextile interface is affected by the moisture content of the soil. At moisture content lower than the optimum water content of the Proctor compaction test, the shear strength of the soil-geotextile interface is greater. 3. The type and surface roughness of the geotextile have the greatest influence on the interface friction angle between the soil and the geotextile.
In order to prevent environmental pollution, initiatives to increase the sustainability of resources are supported by society. However, the performance of recycled materials does not generally match that of natural materials. This study looks into the use of geogrid to improve various types of recycled aggregates. For this purpose, five different recycled aggregates were created by recycling wastes from the construction industry. Besides, direct shear tests (DS tests) were carried out on these recycled aggregates to determine their shear strengths. Following that, a triaxial geogrid was placed in the recycled aggregates to provide reinforcement, and the DS tests were conducted on the reinforced recycled aggregates. The results of the tests were also compared to those of tests performed on natural aggregates (NA). In conclusion, it was found that the recycled aggregates have lower shear strengths than the NA. Nonetheless, when reinforced with geogrid, the shear strength of the recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and construction and demolition wastes (CDW) exceeded that of the NA. Furthermore, the geogrid reinforcement increased the shear strength of the recycled crushed bricks (CB), though not to the level of the NA.
