  • The properties of magnetic recording materials largely depend on their shape magnetic anisotropy. The control of their shape and size distribution is very important for improving magnetic properties. The silica-coated goethite$(SiO_2$/$\alpha$-FeOOH=1.5wt%) having acicular shape was prepared. The sillica-coated goethite was heat-treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$~1,00$0^{\circ}C$ 1hr and then reduced at 50$0^{\circ}C$ 2hr. When the silica-coated goethite was heat-treated at 80$0^{\circ}C$ its acicular shape was maintained and its magnetic properties were improved(Hc: 1,325 Oe $\sigma$m:138.8 emu/g, Rs:0.56) However the acicular shape of the paricles was broken for non-coated hematite obtained by dehydration at 80$0^{\circ}C$ They were sintered and showed poor magnetic properties.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers cross-linked with pentaerythritol, a four-way cross-linker, are prepared to compare their mechanical and shape memory properties with the one cross-linked by glycerol. Composition of PEG and pentaerythritol is varied to search for the one with the best mechanical and shape memory properties. The highest shape recovery rate is observed for the copolymer composed of 30 mol% PEG-200 and 2.5 mol% pentaerythritol. Four-way cross-linking by pentaerythritol significantly improves shape recovery rate and retention of high shape recovery rate after repeated use compared to the one cross-linked by glycerol, a three-way cross-linker, and difference and advantage of additional cross-linking point are discussed.

  • In this paper, an experimental study has been carried out to develop an aluminum forged piston which has good mechanical properties. Through the experiment, the cavity filling, microstructure and mechanical properties of the final product are investigated with respect to chosen process parameters, which are die shape, heat-treatment condition and preform shape. The mechanical properties of the forged piston are compared with these of the cast piston. As the results, an appropriate die-shape is obtained to produce a perfect piston. The suitable heat-treatment condition and preform-shape are found to good hardness and minute microstructure in the forged piston. And we could obtain the mechanical properties(tensile strength, elongation and hardness) of the forged piston are superior to these of the cast piston.

  • The fatigue properties of Ti-Ni shape memory alloy wires were investigated. In Ni-rich Ti-Ni shape memory alloys, $Ti_3Ni_4$ precipitates formed by aging treatments are believed to vary the shape memory and mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of aging temperature and aging time on shape memory properties and fatigue life were investigated using Ti-50.9 at% Ni alloy wires. The specimens were solution-treated at 1073 K for 3.6 ks followed by aging at 573 K, 673 K and 773 K for periods between 3.6 ks and 3600 ks. It was found that the fatigue life under a constant stress decreased with increasing aging temperature. When the specimens were aged at 573 K for periods between 36 ks and 360 ks, superior shape memory and fatigue properties were obtained. The fatigue life also decreased when the test temperature and strain amplitude increased. It was concluded that the fatigue life exhibited a linear relationship with the critical stress for slip.

  • This study was designed to analyze the three-dimensional shapes of Hanbok Chima made with various fabrics and to clarify the relationship between fabric properties as well as the objective and subjective evaluations of the 3D shape. For 3D shape data, a dress form (9A2 (N; nude)) was scanned with eight Chima garments made with the same number of fabrics. The scanner used was a non-contact three-dimensional human body measuring system belonging to Bunka Women's University in Japan. Data concerning the objective evaluation of the 3D shape was obtained from the measurements of the vertical and horizontal sections: those for subjective evaluation were through the sensory test after exposure to photographs from a front and side view. Four fabric factors were extracted from fabric physical properties: softness, extension, thickness of threads, and weight of fabric. Such factors as expansion (volume), sag of rear train, shape of nodes were influential in explaining the 3D shape of Hanbok Chima. From the analysis of the 3D shape, it can be deduced that with the constituent fabric stiffer, lighter, and less stretchable, the more expanded the 3D shape appeared to be. Multiple regression results showed that vertical shape factors have a greater effect on the evaluation of the 3D shape. It also implies that dependent variables of this study such as the subjective evaluation and 3D shape can be derived from regression equations on independent variables as fabric property factors or 3D shape factors. These results can enable the manufacturers to predict the 3D shape of the garment as well as the human subjective assessment to improve the efficacy of production. The investigation method proposed in this study can also be applicable to other garment items.

  • There are many factors which affect the acoustical properties of a micro-speaker. Among the factors, the shape of the diaphragm is considered in this study. As an investigating method, the finite element methods and measurement techniques applied to study the acoustical properties according to diaphragm shape. In order to vary the stiffness of the diaphragm, the some patterns of comb teeth, such as the angle and the number of comb teeth, are applied to diaphragm. We can confirm that the change of the stiffness by the changing diaphragm shape affects the vibration and sound properties of the speaker. As a result, the reduction of the angle of the comb teeth increases the diaphragm stiffness and shifts the resonance frequency to a higher frequency range. The number of the comb teeth is related to the stiffness of the edge part.

  • Noble metal nanoparticles (mainly Au, Ag, Pt and Pd) have received enormous attention owing to their unique and fascinating properties. In the past decades, many researchers have reported methods to control the shape and the size of these noble metal nanoparticles. They have consequently demonstrated outstanding and tunable properties and thus enabled a variety of applications such as surface plasmonics, photonics, diagnostics, sensing, energy storage and catalysis. This paper focuses on the recent advances in the solution-phase synthesis of shape- and size-controlled noble metal nanoparticles. The strategies and protocols for the synthesis of the noble metal nanoparticles are introduced with discussion of growth mechanisms and important parameters, to present the general criteria needed for producing desirable shapes and sizes. This paper reviews their remarkable properties as well as their shape- and size- dependence providing insights on the manipulation of shape and size of metal nanoparticles, necessary for appropriate applications. Finally, several applications using the shape- and size-controlled noble metal nanoparticles are highlighted.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties related to the fabric appearance of well being functional bamboo knitted fabric before and after loess dyeing were evaluated. The mechanical properties of fabrics were measured by KES-F system, that is, shape retention, draping, wrinkle recovery, compression property, and surface properties, and total hand value of three types of knitted fabric, 100% bamboo, 100% cotton, and bamboo / cotton blend (60 / 40) were evaluated before and after loess dyeing. As a result, it was found that appearance density, shape retention, and drape coefficient of cotton knitted fabric were greater than those of bamboo knitted fabric. After loess dyeing, shape retention and drape coefficient, wrinkle recovery of bamboo knitted fabric improved and WC/C and MMD/SMD decreased. According to THV, the hand of bamboo/cotton blend knit is the best among three samples by compensation the weak properties of the two fiber. Therefore, loess dyeing seemed to be a good method for improving shape retention and hand value of 100% bamboo and bamboo blended fabric.

  • In this paper, we propose a concrete crack detection method using shape properties. It is based on morphology algorithm and crack features. We assume that an input image is contaminated by various noises. Thus, we use a morphology operator and extract patterns of crack. It segments cracks and background using opening and closing operations. Morphology based segmentation is better than existing integration methods using subtraction in detecting a crack it has small width. Also, it is robust to noisy environment. The proposed algorithm classifies the segmented image into crack and background using shape properties of crack. This method calculates values of properties such as the number of pixels and the maximum length of the segmented region. Also, pixel counts of clusters are considered. We decide whether the segmented region belongs to cracks according to those data. Experimental results show that our proposed crack detection method has better results than those by existing detection methods.

  • This study proposes to develop a 3D printed re-entrant(RE) strip by shape memory thermoplastic polyurethane that can be deformed and recovered by thermal stimulation. The most suitable 3D printing infill density condition and temperature condition during shape recovery for mechanical behavior were confirmed. As the poisson's ratio indicated, the higher the recovery temperature, the closer the poisson's ratio to zero and the better the auxetic properties. After recovery testing for five minutes, it appeared that the shape recovery ratio was the highest at 70℃. The temperature range when the shape recovery ratio appeared to be more than 90% was a recovery temperature of more than 50℃ and 60℃ when deformed under a constant load of 100 gf and 300 gf, respectively. This indicated that further deformation occurred after maximum recovery when recovered at a temperature of 80℃, which is above the glass transition temperature range. As for REstrip by infill density, a shape recovery properties of 100% was superior than 50%. Additionally, as the re-entrant structure exhibited a shape recovery ratio of more than 90%, and exhibited auxetic properties. It was confirmed that the infill density condition of 100% and the temperature condition of 70℃ are suitable for REstrips for applying the actuator.
