In this work, the bending and free vibration analysis of multilayered plates and shells is presented by utilizing a new higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The proposed involves only four unknowns, which is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and without requiring the shear correction coefficient. Unlike the conventional HSDTs, the present one presents a novel displacement field which incorporates undetermined integral variables. The equations of motion are derived by using the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then solved via Navier-type, closed form solutions. Bending and vibration results are found for cylindrical and spherical shells and plates for simply supported boundary conditions. Bending and vibration problems are treated as individual cases. Panels are subjected to sinusoidal, distributed and point loads. Results are presented for thick to thin as well as shallow and deep shells. The computed results are compared with the exact 3D elasticity theory and with several other conventional HSDTs. The proposed HSDT is found to be precise compared to other several existing ones for investigating the static and dynamic response of isotropic and multilayered composite shell and plate structures.

Coastal shellfish in the shallow aquaculture waters form carbon contained shells as they grow. The existing researches showed that carbon flux can be improved, if the shells are re-treated by the carbon stored methods. In the present study, firstly, the mechanism and the quantitative flux of carbon dioxide in the shellfish individual have been analyzed. The re-treated methods of the useful by-product in the shellfish aquaculture, shells, have been reviewed. Finally, the potential effects to reduce the greenhouse gas has been suggested, if the shells can be properly re-treated.
The dynamic instability for snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. There is few paper which deal with the dynamic buckling under the load with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitation is expected the different behavior against step excitation. In this study, the dynamic direct snapping of shallow elliptic paraboloidal shells is investigated under not only step excitation but also sinusoidal and seismic excitations, applied in the up-and-down direction. The dynamic nonlinear responses are obtained by the numerical integration of the geometrically nonlinear equations of motion, and examined by the Fourier spectral analysis in order to get the frequency-dependent characteristics of the dynamic instability for various load levels. The results show that the dynamic instability phenomenon carried out from stable to unstable region reveals considerably different mechanism depending on the characteristics of excitations.

The nonlinear dynamics of a directly forced clamped-clamped-free-free magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) sandwich shell has been experimentally investigated. Experiments have been conducted on an aluminium shallow shell (shell A) and an MRE-aluminium sandwich shallow shell with single curvature (shell B). An electrodynamic shaker has been used to directly force shells A and B in the vicinity of their fundamental resonance frequency; a laser displacement sensor has been used to measure the vibration amplitude to construct the frequency-response curves. It was observed that for an aluminium shell (shell A), that at small forcing amplitudes, a weak softening-type nonlinear behaviour was observed, however, at higher forcing amplitudes the nonlinear dynamical behaviour shifted and a strong hardening-type response occurred. For the MRE shell (shell B), the effect of forcing amplitude showed softening at low magnetic fields and hardening for medium magnetic fields; it was also observed the mono-curved MRE sandwich shell changed dynamics to quasiperiodic displacement at some frequencies, from a periodic displacement. The presence of a magnetic field, initial curvature, and forcing amplitude has significant qualitative and quantitative effects on the nonlinear dynamical response of a mono curved MRE sandwich shell.
Stable isotope profiles with fine-scale resolution were constructed from the fossil mollusk shells, Mercernaria mercernaria, obtained from the late Pleistocene transgressive deposits of Gomez Pit, Virginia, USA. Incremental sampling were made along the axis of maximum growth to provide high-resolution ${\delta}^{18}$O and ${\delta}^{13}$C records. The ${\delta}^{18}$O shell profiles exhibit a series of pronounced cycles in the overall amplitude, corresponding to strong seasonal variations in temperature, which is apparently positive environmental variable. Contrasts between the patterns of ${\delta}^{18}$O and ${\delta}^{13}$C profiles reflect the relationship influencing the seasonal carbon cycling in the shallow marine environment. Positive anomalies of the ${\delta}^{13}$C values during the summer were observed to be out of phase with the ${\delta}^{18}$O profile. Such relatively heavier carbon source may be alternated due to seasonal methanogenesis during the summer. A hypothesized methane-based system may be operated in the shallow and marginal marine environment, resulting in a ${\delta}^{13}$C enriched bicarbonate pool, in which the heavier isotope seems to be incorporated to the shell carbonate.

The some papers which deal with the dynamic instability for shell-like structures under the dynamic excitation have been published, but there are few papers which treat the essential phenomenon of the dynamic buckling using the phase plane for investigating occurrence of chaos. In nonlinear dynamic, examining the characteristics of attractor on the phase plane and investigating the dynamic buckling process are very important thing for understanding why unstable phenomena are sensitively originated by various initial conditions. In this study, the direct and indirect snapping of shallow EP shell considering geometrical nonlinearity are investigated by Galerkin method numerically. This finding out the characteristic of the dynamic instability through the phases curves and running response spectrum.

The physical and mathematical foundations of the heat-shielding composite materials functioning under the conditions of aerodynamic heating of aircraft, as well as under the conditions of the point effect of high-energy radiation are considered. The problem of deformation of a thin shallow shell under the action of a local temperature field is approximately solved. Such problems arise, for example, in the case of local destruction of heat-protective coatings of aircraft shells. Then the aerodynamic heating acts directly on the load-bearing shell of the structure. Its destruction inevitably leads to the death of the entire aircraft. A methodology has been developed for the numerical solution of the entire complex problem on the basis of economical absolutely stable numerical methods. Multiple results of numerical simulation of the thermal state of the locally heated shallow shell under conditions of its thermal destruction at high temperatures have been obtained.
In this article, nonlinear finite element solutions of bending responses of functionally graded spherical panels are presented. The material properties of functionally graded material are graded in thickness direction according to a power-law distribution of volume fractions. A general nonlinear mathematical shallow shell model has been developed based on higher order shear deformation theory by taking the geometric nonlinearity in Green-Lagrange sense. The model is discretised using finite element steps and the governing equations are obtained through variational principle. The nonlinear responses are evaluated through a direct iterative method. The model is validated by comparing the responses with the available published literatures. The efficacy of present model has also been established by demonstrating a simulation based nonlinear model developed in ANSYS environment. The effects of power-law indices, support conditions and different geometrical parameters on bending behaviour of functionally graded shells are obtained and discussed in detail.

A method for shape design sensitivity analysis for axisymmetric shells of general shapes is developed. The basic approach is to divide the structures into many segments. For each of the segments, the formula for a shallow arch or shell can be applied and the results assembled. To interconnect those segments, the existing sensitivity formula, obtained for a variation only in the direction perpendicular to the plane on which the structure is mapped, has been extended to include a variation normal to the middle surface. The method follows the adjoint variable approach based on the material derivative concept as established in the literature. Numerical examples are taken to illustrate the method and the applicability to practical design problems.

This paper deals with general equations of motion for free vibration analysis response of thick three-layer doubly curved sandwich panels (DCSP) under simply supported boundary conditions (BCs) using higher order shear deformation theory. In this model, the face sheets are orthotropic laminated composite that follow the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) based on Rissners-Mindlin (RM) kinematics field. The core is made of orthotropic material and its in-plane transverse displacements are modeled using the third order of the Taylor's series extension. It provides the potentiality for considering both compressible and incompressible cores. To find these equations and boundary conditions, Hamilton's principle is used. Also, the effect of trapezoidal shape factor for cross-section of curved panel element ($1{\pm}z/R$) is considered. The natural frequency parameters of DCSP are obtained using Galerkin Method. Convergence studies are performed with the appropriate formulas in general form for three-layer sandwich plate, cylindrical and spherical shells (both deep and shallow). The influences of core stiffness, ratio of core to face sheets thickness and radii of curvatures are investigated. Finally, for the first time, an optimum range for the core to face sheet stiffness ratio by considering the existence of in-plane stress which significantly affects the natural frequencies of DCSP are presented.
