  • High frequency ultrasound imaging typically suffers from low sensitivity due to the small aperture of high frequency transducers and shallow imaging depth due to the frequency-dependent attenuation of ultrasound. These limitations should be overcome to obtain high-frequency, high- resolution ultrasound images. One practical solution to the problems is a high-performance signal receiver capable of detecting a very small signal and amplifying the signal with minimal electronic noise addition. This paper reports a recently developed low-noise, wideband ultrasound receiver for high-frequency, high-resolution ultrasound imaging. The developed receiver has an amplification gain of up to 73 dB and a variable amplification gain range of 48 dB over an operating frequency of 80 MHz. Also, it has an amplification gain flatness of ${\pm}1dB$. Due to these high performances, the developed receiver has a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 8.4 dB and a contrast-to-noise ratio of at least 3.7 dB higher than commercial receivers.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved watershed algorithm that resolves the oversegmentation problem shown in the previous watershed algorithm and its modifications when the spatial video segmentation is performed. The principal idea of the proposed algorithm is merging the shallow catchment basin whose depth is less than a given threshold into the deeper one during flooding step. In the flooding process, the growth of the existing catchment basins and the extraction of newly flooded ones are accomplished. We present the experimental results using several MPEG test sequences in the last part of the paper. As a consequence, the proposed algorithm shows good segmentation results according to the thresholds applied by adding very small amount of calculations.

  • A modeling system for three-dimensional flow (FEMOS) has been developed and applied to simulate the tidal currents of Asan Bay. The system can consider tidal flats changing with time and uses a finite element method that can adapt coastline change effectively. The simulation results for Asan Bay with large tidal flats, shallow water depth and high tidal range showed good agreements with the observed currents of long-term variations at the medium layer and short-term variations of vertical profiles. Based on the simulated tidal currents, the horizontal distributions of bottom shear stress were calculated and showed close relation with the change of bottom topography. The system can be used widely to study coastal circulation in the coastal region with complex geography.

  • This paper is for the hull form development of high-speed passenger ship in the Yellow Sea. To carry out hull form development in Yellow Sea, a catamaran which is designed for high-speed as well as comfortable passenger vessel up to now is selected and investigated. For this, environments of the Yellow Sea such as tide, water depth and so on are considered as important factor. The economical efficiency of the designed ship is considered too. In order to estimate the resistance characteristics of the designed hull form, numerical simulations and model test are performed.

  • The slip-weakening model developed by Ohnaka and Yamashita is extended over the breakdown zone by equating the scaling relationships for the breakdown zone and the whole rupture area. For the extension, the study uses the relationship between rupture velocity and radiation efficiency, which was derived in the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics, and the definition of fmax given in the specific barrier model proposed by Papageorgiou and Aki. The results clearly show that the extended scaling relationship is governed by the ratio of rupture velocity to S wave velocity, and the velocity ratio can be determined by the ratio of characteristic frequencies of a Fourier amplitude spectrum, which are corner frequency, fc, and source-controlled cut-off frequency, fmax, or vice versa. The derived relationship is tested by using the characteristic frequencies extracted from previous studies of more than 130 shallow crustal events (focal depth less than 25 km, MW 3.0~7.5) that occurred in Japan. Under the assumption of a dynamic similarity, the rupture velocity estimated from fmax/fc and the modified integral timescale give quite similar scale-dependence of the rupture area to that given by Kanamori and Anderson. Also, the results for large earthquakes show good agreement to the values from a kinematic inversion in previous studies. The test results also indicate the unavailability of the spectral self-similarity proposed by Aki because of the scale-dependent rupture velocity and the rupture velocity-dependent fmax/fc; however, the results do support the local similarity asserted by Ohnaka. It is also remarkable that the relationship between the rupture velocity and fmax/fc is quite similar to Kolmogorov's hypothesis on a similarity in the theory of isotropic turbulence.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the perception of renewable energy technology among elementary school teachers, and confirm whether elementary school teachers have basic knowledge about renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and tidal power generation. We conducted preliminary interviews to gather information related to other studies about renewable energy. We developed the last interview question about the perception and knowledge of elementary school teachers regarding renewable energy. This study analyzed the transcribed responses of 10 elementary school teachers in Siheung-city, Gyeonggi-do, following 30-minute interviews. The study's findings are as follows. First, elementary school teachers recognize that they are unfamiliar with concepts and they have only shallow content knowledge about renewable energy. And they tended to distorted to other concepts, and analyze to different meanings. Second, elementary school teachers thought that knowledge about renewable energy should be part of a well-rounded education. And they felt positively about solar energy and wind power energy generation but they had a negative view towards tidal power generation because it destroys tideland. Third, teachers tended to confuse solar heat energy and geothermal energy, they tend to think this two energy sources the same. Teachers had generally correct concepts about wind power energy generation. In the case of tidal power generation, elementary school teachers answered mechanically that it is possible on the western sea, and that 'the difference between the rise and fall of the tide' grows. But they could not talk in depth about 'the difference between the rise and fall of the tide' and the force of waves. This suggests that they are answering by simple memorization and without deep understanding.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the effects on the growth of Sedum species by different soil in shallow green roof module system, and to find the best soil mixture. The experiment used a module system, 7cm soil depth, five types of soil mixture ratio, and it was carried out on 7th Hoar rooftop in December of 2010. The growth status of the plant showed the most superior of the P5C7P2V1, next P10C1P2V1 and P1P1V1, P1 and C1 showed very poor growth. This result showed that the soil mixture ratio (P5C7P2V1) in green roof module system with minimum management can contribute to the proliferation of rooftop greening in urban settings.

  • We analyze existing time-dependent mild-slope equations, which were developed by Smith and Sprinks (1975) (or, equivalently, Radder and Dingemans (1985)) and Kubo et al. (1992), in terms of the dispersion relation and energy transport. One-dimensionally in the horizontal direction, we compare the modulation of wave amplitudes for the time-dependent mild-slope equations against the linear Scrodinger equation. In view of the dispersion relation and modulation of wave amplitudes, Smith and Sprinks' model is more accurate in shallower water (kh$\leq$0.2$\pi$) and satisfies the linear Scrodinger equation in very shallow water (kh>0.2$\pi$) and satisfies the linear Scrodinger equation at a point of intermediate water depth (kh=0.3$\pi$). In view of the energy transport, Kubo et al.'s model is more accurate but yields singular solutions at some higher frequency range.

  • The waves are most important dynamical factors for the analyses of structural stability and topographical changes on coastal engineering field. However, wind-generated waves are very irregular in shape and transformed through refraction, diffraction and shoaling when they propagate into shallow water where bottom topography and water depth vary significantly. Recently, Vincent and Briggs (1989) reported hydraulic model experiments for the transformation of monochromatic and directionally-spread irregular waves passing over a submerged elliptical mound. They concluded that for the case of combined refraction-diffraction of waves by a shoal, the propagation characteristics of the irregular and equivalent regular wave conditions can be vastly different. On the irregular wave transformation have been made theoretical and numerical studies for several years. Although theoretical and laboratory studies on wave transformation have progressed considerably, field measurement and comparison of numerical results with related theories are still necessary for the prediction of the phenomena in reality. In this study, field measurement of both incident and transformed waves in Youngil Bay were made using various kinds of equipments, and numerical computations were made on the transformed frequency spectra of large waves propagating over the shoal using Chae and Jeong's (1992) elliptic model. It is shown that this model results agree very well with field data, and thus the applicability of the model is now validated.

  • The precious-meta] mineralization of epithermal type in the Korean Peninsula, which is spread over a broader range of ca. 110 to 60 Ma with a major population between 90 and 70 Ma, mainly occurred along the NE-trending major strike-slip fault systems (i.e., the Gongju and Gwangju ones) that commonly include volcano-tectonic depressions and calderas. The occurrence of epithermal mineralization during Late Cretaceous clearly indicates that the geologic setting of the Korean Peninsula changed to the favorable depth of ore formation with very shallow-crustal environments (〈1.0 kb) accompanied with gold-silver (-base-meta]) mineralization. Epithermal gold-silver deposits in Korea are primarily distinguished as sediment-dominant and volcanic-dominant basins by using criteria of varying alteration, ore and gangue mineralogy deposited by the interaction of different ore-forming fluids with host rocks and meteoric waters. These differences between the central and southern portions are causally linked to the tectonic evolution of the Peninsula during the Cretaceous time. In the Early Cretaceous, the sinistral strike-slip movements due to the oblique subduction of the Izanagi Plate resulted in the Gongju and Gwangju fault systems in the central portion of the Korean Peninsula, which was accompanied with a number of sediment-dominant basins formed along these faults. During the Late Cretaceous, the mode of convergence of the Izanagi Plate changed to northwesteward so that orthogonal convergence occurred with a calc-alkaline volcanism. As results, volcanic-dominant basins were developed in the southern portion of the Peninsula, accompanied with volcano-tectonic depressions and caldera-related fractures. The magmatism and related fractures during Late Cretaceous may play an important role in the formation of geothermal systems. Thus, such fault zones may be favorable environments for veining emplacement that is closely related to the precious-metal mineralization of epithermal type in the Korean Peninsula.
