In this study, the optimal sewer layout model(Lee, J.H., 2010)[1] was applied to verify the reduction effect of urban inundation in the optimal sewer networks, which designed by this optimal model, for various artificial rainfall events in urban areas. Then the optimal model was developed by Lee, J.H. to minimize the peak outflow at outlet in sewer network. The applied rainfall events are two types. One is the rainfall event which the double peak occurs between specific time distance continuously. The other is the continuous rainfall event with specific rainfall intensity. As the result, in two applied rainfall types, the peak outflows at outlet were reduced in the optimal sewer networks which designed the optimal sewer layout model of Lee, J.H.. Therefore, the peak outflow is reduced because the inflows at each manhole are distributed in the whole sewer networks, it's not delay of inflows by this optimal model.

Most developed models are designed to determine pipe diameter, slope and overall layout in order to minimize the cost for the design rainfall for the optimal sewer layout. However, these models are not capable of considering the superposition effect of runoff hydrographs in the sewer pipes. The flow characteristics in the sewer pipes, such as the sewer layout, pipe diameter and slope, vary according to the design of the sewer system. In particular, when the sewer network is modified, the shapes of the runoff hydrographs in the sewer pipes also change because of the superposition effect. In this study, the sewer layout is designed to control and distribute the flows in the sewer pipes, while considering the runoff superposition effect, in order to reduce the inundation risk at each junction. This is accomplished by separating the inflows that enter into each junction by changing the way in which pipes are connected between junctions. And this model combines SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) to perform the hydraulic analysis for the flows in the sewer network. The current sewer layout was modified to minimize the peak outflow at outlet in Garak basin, Seoul, South Korea. As the results, the peak outflows at the outlet were decreased by approximately 20% for the design rainfall during 30 minutes and the total overflows were also decreased for the excessive rainfalls.
Objectives: This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from sewerage facilities such as a sanitary sewers, outlets, and catch basins. In addition, the dominant malodorous VOCs among the compounds in this study were studied. Methods: Waste gas samples were collected at 27 points in a sanitary sewer in commercial and residental areas. The concentrations of seven volatile organic compounds, including benzene and toluene, in the samples were analyzed by gas chromatograph mass spectrophotometer (GC/MS). Odor concentrations were estimated using the concentration data of the VOCs and each compound's threshold limit value. Results: As a result, it appeared that the average concentration of total observed data for acetaldehyde was 15.98 ppb and benzene 1.87 ppb, toluene 82.31 ppb, ethyl benzene 63.12 ppb, m+p-xylene 15.66 ppb, oxylene 18.73 ppb, and styrene 4.39 ppb. VOC concentrations in the commercial area were higher than those in the residential area. VOC concentrations of waste gas emitted from sewer lines was also higher than those at the outlet and in the catch basins. It was estimated that the main malodorous VOC among the seven VOCs was acetaldehyde. Conclusions: As there is little data on VOC concentrations inside sewer facilities in Korea, these data will be helpful for estimating impact assessment of VOCs and establishing a counter-plan for the abatement of VOCs from sewer facilities in the future.

To achieve the optimal sewer layout design, most developed models are designed to determine pipe diameter, slope and overall layout in order to minimize the least cost for the design rainfall. However, these models are not capable of considering the superposition effect of runoff hydrographs entering each junction. The suggested Optimal Sewer Layout Model (OSLM) is designed to control flows and distribute the node inflows while taking into consideration the superposition effect for reducing the inundation risk from the sewer pipes. The suggested model used the genetic algorithm to determine the optimal layout, which was connected to the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) for the calculation of the hydraulic analysis. The suggested model was applied to an urban watershed of 35 ha, which is located in Seoul, Korea. By using the suggested model, several rainfall events, including the design rainfall and excessive rainfalls, were used to generate runoff hydrographs from a modified sewer layout. By the results, the peak outflows at the outlet were decreased and the overflows were also reduced.
In this study, SWMM model is used to reproduce the main storm sewer system located in the Nae-Hang drainage basin of the Mokpo city and keep track of flood discharge. Given the outlet of the reaches border the coastline, this paper has taken the dual-drainage approach to perform inundation simulation, considering both the overflows and inflows at the manholes of the sewer system, and at the same time, taking the impacts of tidal stage into consideration. The following conclusions are reached in this study: First, when planning lowland sewer system alongside the coastline or the riverside, the tidal stage or flood stage need to be considered in the planning and design processes. Second, an analysis that fails to consider overflow and inundation at the manholes may overestimate inundation depth of the flooded area. In other words, in order to estimate flood discharge and flood stage in a lowland storm sewer system, it is desirable to analyze the conveyance capacity of storm sewer system and simulate overflow and inundation at the manholes at the same time.

We study the characteristic and total flux of non-point pollutants such as total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved nutrients, total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) in the storm water runoff from urban streams and sewer outlets of Banweol Industrial Complex around Shihwa Lake. The concentrations of non-point pollutants were generally increased with increasing of the duration and intensity of rainfall. Mean TSS concentration of Ansan stream was higher than that of sewer outlets but mean concentrations of COD, TP and TN were approximately 2~5 times higher of sewer outlet than of urban stream. TSS showed statistically positive relationships with COD and TP but it had negative correlation with dissolved nutrients. There was a significant correlation between total flux of non-point pollutants in the storm water runoff and total basin area of each sewer outlet, showing that the highest runoff flux was observed at 3rd sewer outlet which represents the largest basin area from Banweol industrial complex. Total runoff fluxes for TSS, COD, TP and TN in this study were 187,536 kg, 17,118 kg, 922 kg, 13,519 kg, respectively. Given the basin area of sewer outlet in Banweol industrial complex which corresponds only 3% from total catchment area around Shihwa Lake, enormous amount of non-point pollutants will be entered into Shihwa Lake without any treatment. It is necessary to manage and reduce of various non-point sources and pollutants because the runoff of nonpoint pollutants during storm events should be deteriorating the water quality of Shihwa Lake. Our results provides useful informations on the development of best managements practices (BMPs) for effective implementation of total pollution loads management system of Shihwa Lake.

Although many researches have been carried out concerning the watershed division in natural areas, it has not been researched for the urban watershed division. If the boundary between two urban areas is indistinct because no natural distinction or no administrative division is between the areas, the boundary between the urban areas that have the different outlets (multi-outlet urban watershed) is determined by only designer of sewer system. The suggested urban watershed division model (UWDM) determines the watershed boundary to reduce simultaneously the peak outflows at the outlets of each watershed. Then, the UWDM determines the sewer network to reduce the peak outflow at outlet by determining the pipe connecting directions between the manholes that have the multi-possible pipe connecting directions. In the UWDM, because the modification of the sewer network changes the superposition effect of the runoff hydrographs in sewer pipes, the optimal sewer layout can reduce the peak outflow at outlet, as much as the superposition effects of the hydrographs are reduced. Therefore, the UWDM can optimize the watershed distinction in multi-outlet urban watershed by determining the connecting directions of the boundary-manholes using the genetic algorithm. The suggested model was applied to a multi-outlet urban watershed of 50.3ha, Seoul, Korea, and the watershed division of this model, the peak outflows at two outlets were decreased by approximately 15% for the design rainfall.

In the previous researches for storm sewer design, the flow paths in overall network were determined to minimize the construction cost and then, it was not considered the superposition effect of runoff hydrographs in the sewer pipes. However, in this research, the flow paths are determined considering the superposition effect to reduce the inundation risk by controlling and distributing the flows in the sewer pipes. This is accomplished by distributing the inflows that enter into each junction by changing the flow path in which pipes are connected between junctions. In this paper, the superposition effect and peak outflows at outlet were analyzed considering the changes of the flow paths in the sewer network. Then, the flow paths are determined using genetic algorithm and the objective function is to minimize the peak outflow at outlet. As the applied result for the sample sewer network, the difference between maximum and minimum peak outflows which are caused by the change of flow path was about 5.6% for the design rainfall event of 10 years frequency with 30 min. duration. Also, the typhoon 'Rusa' which occurred at 2002 was applied to verify the reduction of inundation risk for the excessive rainfall, and then, the amount of overflows was reduced to about 31%.

The partitioning level of a catchment becomes an issue if the calculated results from different levels show the same performance regardless of the levels. This study aims to identify the proper processing level of spatial resolution for the SWMM model application in an urban area. Using GIS overlaying technique, the division of subcatchments as a hydrologic similarity unit (HSU) is achieved with a comprehensive consideration of surface slope conditions, flow directions of storm sewers, and current land cover situation. Three surface-sewer alternatives are made on the basis of three different levels of surface divisions as well as the number of sewer connections and used as runoff simulation fields for the application of SWMM. As the result, it is found that the effect of a spatial resolution on the surface runoff results is not significant. On the other hand, the accumulated pollution load from an unit subcatchment, which is built by aggregation of several unit subcatchments consisting of various land cover conditions is reduced through the deterioration of surface spatial resolution. Although overall runoff pattern and accumulated runoff are little affected by spatial resolution, the simulated runoff from sewer outlet shows slight difference at the peak appearance time. The gap between surface pollution load accumulated and it discharged from the sewer outlet in a surface-sewer alternative during runoff period is monitored but the level of error is less than 5-10% except the lowest spatial resolution case.
In the previous researches for storm sewer design, the flow path, pipe diameter and pipe slope were determined to minimize the construction cost. But in the sewer networks, the flows can be changed according to flow path. The current optimal sewer layout models have been focussed on satisfying the design inflow for sewer designs, whereas the models did not consider the occurrences of urban inundation from excessive rainfall events. However, in this research, the sewer networks are determined considering the superposition effect to reduce the inundation risk by controlling and distributing the inflows in sewer pipes. Then, urban inundation can be reduced for excessive rainfall events. An Optimal Sewer Layout Model (OSLM) was developed to control and distribute the inflows in sewer networks and reduce urban inundation. The OSLM uses GA (Genetic Algorithm) to solve the optimal problem for sewer network design and SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) to hydraulic analysis. This model was applied to Hagye basin with 44 ha. As the applied results, in the optimal sewer network, the peak outflow at outlet was reduced to 7.1% for the design rainfall event with 30 minutes rainfall duration versus that of current sewer network, and the inundation occurrence was reduced to 24.2% for the rainfall event with 20 years frequency and 1 hour duration.
